Trying to answer your question constructively as I have played both and must admit I tend to agree. The MTW battles though similar to Shogun have too many 'factors' about them. They are still fun when they work and this is where the main problems lie. There are so many silly online bugs that after sitting at your pc for 3 hours you'd be lucky to have played a single game. As I already stated when things run smooth there is great fun to be had. I was counting on having fun playing as Golden Horde but they have been made so weak its a joke.
In MI we are lucky because we all have the same unit choice and therefore we have the same chance. As we all know MTW has strong and weak factions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif and I still can't work out why. So I would just say a working MTW is fun but STW/MI is more fun.
The next thing I would suggest is that people try the 103 stat Mod. If you want to see epic battles this is your passport. Many times we have been battling for an hour or longer in 3v3 and 4v4. Everything is so well balanced and there is no need for the 4 max no Ashi rule. I guarantee you will like it

I don't know why but some people seem to be reluctant to use 1.03 stat Mod.
It's as if 1.02 is the only playable stat.
From experience I can confirm Orda's comments.
Some battles have lasted an hour and been quite mind blowing.
Personaly I would like to see more people using the 1.03 stat.
Perhaps this will answer the players who keep asking others to join their games and getting a poor response. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif
I play both stats but prefer 1.03. I also enjoy 1.05 stat for Mongol battles. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

WOW great response already ...... glad Im not the only one .... hopefully there will be many more. Jochi I knew I would see you here.

I think one of the reasons why people dont use the 103 stat is because they either dont have it, dont know where to get it, or dont know how to use it.

So everyone if you dont have it, download and instal it (Stat Swapper 3)

Stat swapper 3, click here to down load (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/STW/stats/StatSwapper3.0.zip)

If your useing Windows XP then you will also need this

Bat file reader, click here to down load (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/STW/stats/WinXP-Bat.zip)

Installation instuctions are provided.

Lets try to convert ...... if for any other reason I getting tierd of have to ask "Rules" .... "4 max what ?" blablabla http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

(thanks to tosa)

If any of the above is incorrect please let me know.

IMHO ...

there are players who love STW(MI or not),
there are players who love MTW,
and...

there are A LOT of players who think that they love
more MTW only because it is a new game.

I don't see big differences between the two games, but :

- for me, Shoguns animation and battles are better.
- strategic map is better : I don't like having an army of emissaries, princesses, spies ... on the str. map. bah
- I LOVE samurais and Sengoku Jidai, and I am not a fan of European Middle Ages (of course, my opinion once more).

I have played MTW for 1,5 week only, then uninstalled it and reinstalled STW:MI.
Nothing more to say.

(I have reinstalled MTW now, but still play/prefer STW)

I have not had a change to test it out ..... but look forward to using it again on Sunday .... so hope to see you there.

Remember what the statswapper did to our games? was that the real cause?

dragonchi
12-18-2002, 03:21
Hi Sora ........ I worked out what it was ..... and it wasnt the statswapper directly. It was bad download of.

It began with an incomplete installation of statswapper 3, then in my attempts to get it to work I manually changed some stats .... and thats what caused the problems. So those two files I got you to send me .... replaced my corrupted ones. And now All is good.

Tosa has now re poster the stat swapper 3 and there are no longer problems with its installation.

So it was not the problem.

Sora would be great if you installed it and we have some games using stat 1.03 ....... its really balanced and adds lot more depth....and is less predictable. It makes the game what it should be. Also there is no need for the 4 max rule ... 2 super ashi stuff.

See you in Battle.

Orda Khan
12-18-2002, 18:10
After the 103 stats were released I played them extensively til the 'end' of MI, a breakdown of each units stats I can not give you but there are some things I can point out.
Muskets are weaker yes, not weak, just weaker and their range is less. I have used them as have many others and to good effect, doing what they were intended to do but no more than that. Let's face it they are just Ashi's with guns not trained marksmen who somehow manage to kill your general when he is, or at least should be, out of range. In 103 they will not turn away a cavalry charge, so there is a nice realism to it.
Monks are again what they should be and are the best infantry unit. Saying that, they are not the powerful STW Monks, they fall prey to arrows and that overlooked Naginata unit can hold them up for a long time. So yes the Naginata is a very good choice too in 103. I've seen Toda walk his Nags around chewing up the enemy, awesome. On another occasion, when I had all his men routing, his Naginata General fought like an animal, rallied his troops and led them to victory An incredible display and a lesson in how to use them.

Best news of all is that ridiculous pumped up peasants have no place on the field. They are peasants and not trained expensive troops, therefore only good for backing up decent units. They can still kill, just not everything that moves.

Heavy Cav is a bit weaker, they won't have all their own way against Yari Cav.

The 103 stat is best played at 8000 koku per army.

Hopefully we can try some 3v3 and even some 4v4 next 'Sam Sunday'

Do those numbers mean honour or the number of units??

dragonchi
12-19-2002, 08:09
They look like number of units as it would be strange to spend 8ooo on 7 units ..... also they add up to 16 ... therefore would say 16 units.....

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

TenkiSoratoti
12-19-2002, 12:58
Yes i realised that just after i posted it. But i still need to know the honour???

Ithaskar Fëarindel
12-19-2002, 14:03
Try variations on the honour Sora, and notice how the army acts differently.

Looking at those two armies, the first is similar to my favourite army, and although SA are usually used with low honour, you might just wanna try giving them a little boost and see what happens. The bottom one, although having muskets, is very similar. Remember now in 1.03 that muskets' purpose has now changed; they are there primarily to cause fear in the enemy, not to shoot them up so much (that's a bonus.)

I do think giving away too many tactics is a cheat. Your best option is to try out your own armies until you find one that suits what you would like it to do.

TenkiSoratoti
12-19-2002, 15:06
Righty ho.

Orda Khan
12-19-2002, 17:29
Yes that first army is a nice 'standard' one, kind of all purpose. The scope that a 3v3 or 4v4 gives you, especially when you know your allies, allows you to field some strange armies.

Sora you will find that with 8000 koku the honour levels for all units will be lower than the usual 10000 koku v1.02 battles so you therefore need to spend it wisely. We can chat about it on Sunday but in the meantime H4 W2 A1 Muskets is not a wise move http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

........Orda http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

TenkiSoratoti
12-20-2002, 23:53
I had my muskies at honour 1 and honour 2 , i didnt rely on them that much so it wasnt a great loss if someone rushed my muskies and i lost some of them, now what i relyed was cavs and their superb ability.. I wont go on.

I will, some 1400 gmt and on.

It is true that units have less honor in 8k than 10k. But the morale in 1.03 is still better for various reasons:

-guns have a slightly longer reload and a slightly lower kills/volley: do less damage to the enemy. They still kill and they still hurt morale though.
-some units have +2 morale added in the stats (the wmonk).
-most units have shifted a melee point to defense: they kill slower and fight longer -> battles last longer, attritition is less -> morale doesn't drop as fast as 1.02.
-1.02 guns managed to repel many attacks on their own, 1.03 guns don't. 1.02 guns strongly influenced the melee stage (lots of kills and morale hits).

The mongol army is a bit of a problem, and the 1.03 stat was (regarding the mongol) released too early. We've tested all mongol units, and it looked fine, but frequent use showed they are a bit too weak (that's good news ihmo, since they always were too strong: a small tweak up can bring them were they should be).

Tera
01-10-2003, 16:12
Old STW was the best. I favour both MI 1.02 and 1.03 over MTW...the latter just lacks the 'feel' and maybe yes, that simplicity yet very deep in tactics.

Mist soz, good day of playing on sunday got a bit poohed off at the end because i had to go to school the next day http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif plus my final battle after technically not losing one was lost on the dreaded totomi where Biker played well to defend against my montstrous highland charge, then i promptly said gaaaaaaah and left the room in disgust.

Anyway i dont get much free time now im back at school (school till 7:00pm http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif ).

Oh and my advice, dont stay up till 4:00am, man does it have bad side effects, moodiness, moaningness (i have that already), and seriously lowers level of boystrousness.

Hmmmm, must find time to play STW/MI..... but when? im still not clear
Also I, and probably everyone else has noticed a rush of new comers into the MI lobby's, this is a good thing and a bad thing, the bad side for me is that SOME of 'the vets' use so many different names thus making it hard to differentiate who is who http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
I make mistakes by saying "Hi, your new arnt you?", the recipitent to that is most likely someone who has been in the community for at least 2 years, and im the one lookin' like a fool.

Actually, last week i went online about 11:30pm....but empty as usual....eventually I feel asleep waiting...then woke up at about 3:30am....to my delite the foyer was busy, and I was missing out on the fun.

So my strat from now on is to sleep until about 4-5am Aust time then go online...then go to work at about 9am.

This is unless you guys get your butt in there earlier http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

This may seem rather unorthodox in this forum but it's a computer game and to make a completely new sleeping pattern dedicated to it, is very dangerous - body chemistry can go spastic lol.

Be warned Mist, I have fallen into the same trap aswell.

Right gotta get shogun/MI installed then ill be back up and running again if I can remember all my account details http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

I bought MTW about a year ago and have never played Shogun......but it must have been legendary because there seem to be allot of STW fans out there......

Count me in.

I bought, played, uninstalled and reinstalled MTW, I was really looking forward to this game. Now I think I will uninstall it for good.

Only very rarely in software development, a combination of genius, commitment and patience can yield a true piece of art. Shogun Total War is one of those truly precious gems. I have never played another game that got me so much immersed, or that is so perfectly balanced.

I dont know why things went wrong during the development of MTW but I now think there were many. The bad decision to sacrifice detail for scope, the ugly, confusing stratmap, the inharmoniously placed province borders, the useless eye candy that makes a fantastic engine look and play horrible even on a fast machine, no seasons, no real weather, etc etc etc.

So what can we do? Stick with Shoggy and hope the third incarnation of TW will not be another rushed out step backwards? Hope the many sold copies will enable CA to create a second winner?

I have become afraid MTW is so successful not in spite of, but because of the way it is Have You ever wondered too, why there are so many RTS and FPS fans out there, and so few real strategy or simulation players? I have.

Sighs and makes plans for some really challenging startpos for his next campaign.

i just got my 2nd hand copy of STW WE

and i agree it is heaps heaps better than MTW. For example :-
* battle camera is sooo much smoother
* atmosphere with fog is soooo much remarkable
* I think AI battle is better - more interesting
* units much faster and nicer
* colour scheme of forum is much nicer
* and hopefully, CD key will not be necessary sometime in the future for MP

if given a choice b/w MTW and STW only.. i would Definitely pick STW as a long term classic because it has all the elements MTW has and adds the flair of the east.

well that's what i think.

Well, having played both, I must admit that STW is the superior. Cleaner is the word I would use, straightforward. And I love the mini movies (Ninja assasinations, Geisha defending herself, and the requests for alliance. I hope the next step in the Total War series brings back the throne room.) I have never tired of STW,and I will admit some MTW campaigns drag on to the point I give up and start over. So STW is my choice, hands down.

MTW is a good game and I would like it if I hadn't played Shogun first. Perfomance issues aside, Medieval had no atmosphere and the gameplay was too slow, too easy, and to focused on the campaign map.

There's no doubt Stw rules... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif
I play stw offline all the time...more then any other game..
"doubt i will ever change either"..
I have unistalled both MTW & VTW on more then 1 occasion....then reinstalled because of the Strenght within our Clan that holds us altoegether & not because of the enjoyable play or memories that mtw/vtw has givin me...

Both versions of total war drive me crazy with bordem sometimes http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif

MTW/VTW has always seemed just watered down compared..

STW has never been of my system http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Sunday evenings (GMT/CET) are very nice, upto 24 players online...other nights 4-10 players. Aussies might have a small problem finding a battle though, because it's mostly very quiet when it's the best time for them to play...your evenings.
