Just discovered a reproducible bug, call it "home-alone phobia peasants".

The situation was to let our daimyo be away, and isolated from our own territory. For example, travel via a port to a distant province on the opposite side of the map.

The peasants cannot figure out where their daimyo is, thinking is probably dead. The loyalty drops average 100 - 200 points on all provinces right away! Tons of revolts!

But they feel very happy again as soon as the daimyo returns. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

This could be a feature, you know. It makes sense - it's probably much harder to program the loyalty engine (TM) to identify the daimyô's ground connection with his fiefs than simply put in a daimyô exists / doesn't exist clause.

If it's a feature, the reasoning behind it isn't particularly sound, though. Especially if you only use one of your own ports to go from one of your own province to another.

But wait - if this happens all the time, shouldn't it affect Imagawa and Takeda constantly (in the original Sengoku setup)? Or are there some conditions that trigger the loyalty loss?

perhaps the imagawa and takeda are exempt on the basis that their provinces are friendly (ie. despite water, a direct line can be drawn of clan provinces) whereas Malt's daimyo was in a province not yet conquered and therefore not considered a clan province.
i dunno, just a thought.

If I remember corectly it's a feature. The distance a daimyo is away from a province doed have an influence on the population loyalty. The drop of 100 compares well to what can happen with a province where you have 4 units and then send 2 to an adjacent province. Can make the same difference.
These things are less influential if you have owned the province for a long time.

I just tested again.

One essential condition that I missed to report. The port "back home" has to be blocked or destroyed.

I guess the game calculates the population loyalty according to the shortest distance (# of provinces) between the province and the clan daimyo. Therefore, if the port is blocked while there is 20+, even infinite number of steps to reach the daimyo (separated by provinces owned by others), the loyalty will drop 200 points in one season. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I tested one more condition; you can do it easily, too. It is simple: demolish all your ports while having your daimyo in the far west or east. Then you will see the loyalty of the other side drop significantly. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif
