http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Can't get a better reason than that!

I don't play much multiplayer but I enjoy playing .... Nope, I can't remember the name, I'll get back to you on that http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I think it's Tamba, good fun for defending in single player.

There are many maps that I would put on my favorites list, due to their being balanced and not giving any undue advantage to either an attacker or defender. It is this balance that makes a map popular in online play. Unfortunately too many players are unwilling to explore other maps to broaden their base of truly worthwhile maps and stick with the basics.

As I remember more I'll edit this post, but here is what I can think of off the top of my head:

Totomi, Nagashima (the original) and 4th Kawa. These maps seem to be the perennial favorites among online players. The downside is that they are used so often that they are getting a bit boring now.

Retroshima, Magyarorsag (both), Tami Kotchi and Desert. These maps are fair maps that don't get played on near often enough.

I'll also follow Cat's lead and do some self promotion here. I have created 2 maps so far that in my opinion are well balanced for online play, Ob Sacred Ground WLE and Ob Tsushima WLE. Both maps are available through the 3.0 map pack released by The Daimyo and available both at PlanetTotalWar and here.

Sacred Ground is one of the new large maps with varied terrain. There are plenty of locations on the map that can provide advantages to the smart player and is wide open enough to allow for significant Cavalry use.

Tsushima is a large coastal map with gentle, wooded hills to the rear of the defenders side of the map. Given the deployment zones for the large maps, this one turned out to be more balanced for larger engagements (3x3 and 4x4). It still works well for 1x1 and 2x2, but there will be a slight advantage to defenders as they deployment zones for those size games allow the defenders to take advantage of the terrain changing from open ground to moderately forested hills.

I am also currently working on a 3rd large map that should be a favorite for Cavalry users. It will be called Ob Horselands WLE and will consist primarily of undulating open terrain that will provide ample opportunity for Cavalry operations while still preserving the opportunity for non-Cav users to utilize the terrain effectively as well. I'd characterize this upcoming map as being similar in style to Totomi but different enough that everyone should find it enjoyable and challenging regardless of the size game.

Horselands should be available by next week both here and at PTW.

Hillyvalley, tamikochi and magyarorsag...I love a map with some trees here and there and a few low hills. Any map that enables a player to do some "sneakin" around is the most fun. I love to suprize someone with a flanking force that they dont see until its too late.

Come on lordTed! I would expect something more challenging from you but as they say "assumption is the mother of all f******"
I have just finished my "Thermopyles" map which l like and l forgot desert before. It's quite nice and there are even chances for the defender and attacker. Now a map that l hate is 4th K....
Same scenario followed by the defender with optimum firepower hill which ain't very high but puts the defedner always on a better spot! for 1v1 is ok and 3v3+ but 2v2 on it sucks.

green wins my award for most boring map
it is the fairest, but its all the same texture and stuff - and really no tactical advantages for both sides.

Maps like Tami Kochi are flat and rule...

Gah!

Krast lieks any map EXCEPT TOTOMI and GREEN.

Gah! Krast so sick of TOTOMI!

And GREEN! *yuck*! Nothing to see, no variation in terrain to force changes from same old ho-hum tactics.

Krast likes maps with stuff on them! Hills, forests, wierd landscapes ...

Is much more fun to collect heads on map rarely played. Make map choice unusual! Add variety to life and enjoy Shoggy more! Gah!

well, ya know i had to comment here.

totomi, 4th kawaw, harima: for those with the imagination of garden snails....boring.

green: fairest map in game....so, who wants fair?

i'm like krast...i want variety. good thing you guys arent really trying to conquer japan or you'd fail as soon as you stepped out of totomi. we have hill campers, but there are also map campers, the worst being those that only play totomi and such. a good general needs to be able to win on ANY terrain. an online campaign game would solve this map camping, and maybe they shld have put a limiter in there that when you played one map it would get flagged as not available till you played all of them. nah, wouldnt work, i suppose.

even if you only like flattish maps there are some very good ones besides totomi. and along with that, let's try something other than 'last man standing'.

if someone wants to do a tournament, i'd suggest forcing a variety of maps and game styles. let's test who is the best overall player, not who is best on one flat map.

as for my favorite map (yeah, i normally eventually do get around to staying in topic) i'd have to say my own Pegasus map, just because it's such a visually different map. it plays like hell, but it really is a different type of map.

for playability, i like wooded roads or dry river bed. lots of tactics available here and usually a longer game as well. both are great for 3v3 or 4v4. and tosa has some great flattish maps too, but i can never remember his japanese names http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

K.

edit: you guys do know that you can transfer your stw maps to we/mi, right? they do work. just dont overwrite the new default maps with the old default maps of the same name cause a lot of the old stw maps were modded for we/mi.

I'd also add Sanuki and Harima to the list of favorites. Both are fair maps and incorporate varying terrain as well which makes them interesting as well.

On a side note, I've just uploaded my newest map, Ob Horselands WLE to the Org. This map incorporates varying terrain, and has been tested and given the approval of many of the community's online vets. Keep an eye out for it in the Org's maps section.
