Can you build Gun Factories?

In the first game can you build gun factories and if you can what buildings do you have to build first?

Yeah, you can build gun factories in the original shogun. You need a citadel, a dutch or portugese trading post and an armoury. The armoury is probably the one you had trouble with as not many provinces have iron deposits.
