Hi all,

I have been developing a mod for the Persian Wars. I was motivated by the Patrician mod and all the people that work for it. I try to stay as compatible with the Patrician mod so to have as many units inter changeable but that is difficult so just the graphics, maps and some other aspects will re-main similar.

Write now I am trying to get a V.0.1 out to all of you and then take it from there.

For the moment I have done a lot of work in the units and the Hellenic factions are more or less finished. These include the Hellenic coalition with (Spartans, Athenians and Macedonians in the Later periods), Thracians, Siracusians. I use the Janni folder for there units. The problem is that Thracians used the open-faced Thrasian helmet (… they look like smurfs with bronze helmets) so I might move them to a new folder with the Etruscans.
Hellenic units include the Hyspasis, Ificratian Hoplites, Spartan Hoplites, Sariza Hoplites, and I think that one more Hoplite unit is needed for both the early armies of the city states since the Ificratian Hoplites appear after the Peloponesian war and they are used also by the Siracusians. Thracians and Siracusians have access only to the Hyspasis which is a lightly armored Hoplite but using the Hoplon. As a side note the Ificratian Hoplites use only Linothorax not a breastplate a smaller shield and a 4.5m pike while the Sarizas (I am not sure on this) use the old type of armor but a 6m pike.
Hellenic cavalry is light and I use a generic unit form the Jinets. From high period of after Persian wars Hypicon, and Companions will be available. The Thracians have a excellent Thracian Light Cavalry from the start of the game.

The Etruscans are more or less finished as a units and the Romans as well. I try too keep the units on a low number so the Romans only get two units Legionarii Cohorts, Pretorians guards. They have the same missile and cavalry units with the Etruscans.

The other factions groups include the Celtic with Gauls, Caledonians, Irish and Iberians.
Germanic with the Germanic northern tribes (practical the area above Rhine and Danube), Baltic People, and Vikings (though early for them they will exist).
North Easy Europeans with Skithans and Some people of the north placed in the Moscow area.
And last bat not least the Eastern with the Persians and Carthigians.

Balancing Factors & things to do…
First Expect good units to be Expensive (Spartans cost ~1600) and take a long time (Spartans – 5 years, Hoplites –2 , Legions – 3 ) but they do have brut force. Celtic and Germanic units are both cheep and easy to produce. There stast are at best mediocre but with high charge values. Basically if they don’t brake the enemy with the first charge pull them out. Eastern unit get to be also cheaper and eastern provinces will get to have high income so the Persian kings will be able to support large mercenary armies.
Finally you will not be able to produce all your units every where i.e. Romans can produce Legions every where given they have facilities but Hellenes will only produce Hyspasis out side of territories with Hellenic population so units will be tightly tide to territories and cultural background.
Finally all units will be fixed as close to 100 men for infantry and 80men for cavalry.

Help needed …
I for the unit graphics … I am a lousy painter … I only managed to get some nice shields for the Hellenic units.
If any one has managed to get the map changed and working a reconfiguration of the game map.
And finally as much input and comments from all of you.

I will definitely need some info on practically everything. For the moment I have made a good progress but since not all is ready I can’t post even a beta that will come approximately next weekend (That is if my job permits it … my wife doesn’t take my scalp).

I need some basic info on the later barbarian units (Celtic, Germanic). For the moment I try to get as much info from the DBA and transport it in a heavily modified version of the Exel CA used for the units. When this Exel file will be as I like it (and it doesn’t crash the game) I will post it so all of you can make/modify the units in a unified way.

Some more factions are in plan … since the Skythans are now represented by the Mongols I will give Trepezund, Georgia, and Armenia to the Armenians … I have found some excellent cavalry units that is if you manage to take them out

I am even older (34 full years http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif ) but I am modding only 8 of those (my first modifications were for Civ2). I never got graphics savy though (even when I married to a graphic designer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) but I can help with

- Unit list, characteristics, names, stats, progression, descriptions.
- Names and descriptions generally
- Playtesting.

My time is severely limited (having a very demanding job and a spouse) but I'll do my best, because I am extremely interested into this project.

Some people have made some very decent units (some in the Lord's pack, some for the Praetorian MOD) we can use (after altering them a bit). The only tough cookie is to actually find a guy to put the finishing touches to the units (an artsy guy) and create the new map. The latter (the map, not the guy) is really a bitch.

Sure she will, believe me. If you meet her, you'll understand... anyway, some initial observations:

If we are going to create an actual map for this, looks like we could keep things in the mid and eastern mediteranea. I am thinking of a map that included Italy, the Balkans and Asia Minor, as well as northern Africa.

Of course, that would be an extremely difficult task and looks like we won't find a guy that is going to do all that hard work for us http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

So, if we stick with the map of the game, I'd too like to keep your list, even though some of the factions you are working on are completely out of the respective timeframe. Vikings for instance.

Carthago and Skythes are a must, of course.

Later on, when I get some time off work, I might be able to give my thougts on the initial build-up and perhaps a unit list for 3-4 of the factions in hand.

…. You are right but what I had in mind was a broader view.
The map I would like to have should span the whole of Europe and as deep as Iran and the Caspian but then again …
The best I would do with them bam is re built some provinces … so france would have less ~6 then move these to the split Hungary in two (lower Danube and upper Danube which would require a landing battle to cross from one side to the other), split Greece in three (Peloponnesian, Athenian and Macedon/Northern Greeks), split Naples and Nicea in two.

As for the Vikings … if I named them North Germanic tribes would that be OK … any way it would be very difficult to built the upgrades in order to move to higher units in the final (V.1.0). I am planning to have Early – Persian / Peloponesian wars, High – Post Peloponesian / Hellenistic era, High – The Romans and Game end ~ Imperial Rome that’s ~500 years of war.

As I have it Celts and Germans are a pest. They can threaten you if you get too week or careless. In a test game there was almost instant conflict between Gauls, Germans, Iberians. Etruscans were at war with Syracusians. Romans with Guals but later in the game. The Thracians could not move much due to the Germanics. Hellenes were able to move due to the absence of Persians but when they will come its going to be a mess.

It been two weeks in the mod and many things have been done

Now the Persians are the mostly OK http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif BUT for some reason when ever I put a Muslim faction on the map with Muslim units the game crashes http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif I just can't fined the reason wy it does that but some times it pops a message about a unit being plase in a reagion owned by a faction with a different caltural background??????
If I delete all the units and leave only the king the game continues to behave in the same way. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Kominos, an Emissary or Princess will count as a unit also look on the province in question, if you left any agents on them that conflict in religion and culture you will get this message ,Remove the agents and that should solve the problem. I have come across this problem while working on the Nap. Mod and that solved it for me

I am not sure myself ,but after you clear the agents from the conflicting culture and have established it as Muslim try replacing the agents and see if that does anything? Or maybe you will only be able to get the agents by teching up Royal Palace=Emissary, again this is speculation, all I know is I had the very same error and when I removed the agents the error no longer showed up. Go figure such is the way of Modding...

800 Hoplites, 90 Archers VS 7500+ with Immortals and all.

I can make one more Celtic and Germanic tribe for them since the Guals and Germans have huge territories and can get a lot of power. One other thought is to make the FN_BURGUNDIAN as Illyrians and the Swiss a Celtic faction in the East or to name the Germans as Visigoths and Swiss as Ostrogoths.

Any thoughts???

P.S. Still looking for some help with the map … anyone?

decided not to make a full campaign based on the
trojan war. So i would like to help you on your
mod and to maybe... add troy as a minor faction.
im working on some light infantry for the trojans
at the moment.if you need help on somthing with your

--also im going to be releasing my saxon mod soon..
-it replaces the swiss with the saxons in the early period
- also it has saxon axemen and archers and a few other units.

You have mentioned that you were working with the map-making utility, One think I really need is a reorganization of the map to give more provinces to the south …
First Hungary needs to be split in two on the Danube river.
Second Greece needs to be split in at least four provinces. Starting from the northern to be Macedonia, Biotia, Attica and Peloponnes.

The rest were barbarian mostly ...

Any way theres a lot of work to be done and most probably it will be done in VI. Remember this is not VI compatible

Here are a couple Celts and a hoplite if you can use them. Would be very interested in playing your mod, have always been fascinated by the Greek and Roman campaigns in `Persia`.

Nice onses but unifortunatly we can't incertthem in the game ... Oh ... I know most show the Hoplites as fighting bearfoot, I do not agree on that ... they used some type of heavy sandals that protected the foot eaven from burning materials if they steped on.

Has any one installed and played it yet?

In short, we had: early hoplite or phalanx formation (support with missile units sometimes/peltasts),Theban formations(strong left wing and refused right wing, support of cavalry),Iphicrates reforms (importace of the light army, peltast), Macedonian system(heavy cavalry mixed with theban system), Early manipular system( sucess over the phalanx system).
I was moved with Patrician 1.2 mod, and I'm feeling the same with Persian Wars. I would like to see some of Patrician units here, but I have to play a campaign.
Also, we may turn this mod better with costumised icons. I may help here. I'm still working on units(bifs) for Patrician. Nice work komninos.

I have done some Persian stuff but they are not very good … gust the shield basically. I have to give the Immortals a light pavice for protection.

Update on this,
same probleme here, crashes in campaign mode,moving fase, but I like the mod and I use it just to do some custom battles. I'm also working on a set of new icons ( Bifs and LBMs) both for Persian and Patrician mods. I'll make them available in a generic form for use by our community. That means, we can adapt those icons for any mod. Also I corrected in names.txt file some errors in units names.Holpite and infanty (ex:) to Hoplite and Infantry. A link here for the file.

Yes I have noticed the crushes but I can’t find out why it hangs
It happens at certain points in the game but I am not sure why it happens. I have noticed once because I chose to face the Persians in the battlefield … but when I chose to let the general fight it all went OK http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I will start porting it on the VI where it will get a lot of new units and not by reusing existing ones. And More Factions will exist at least 2 – 3 Celtic on the main land Europe and ~ 6 Germanic and ~ 4 – 5 Steppe factions.

I would like to get it in two parts a small campaign where it will start in the dark ages and you should make it to be the King of the Hellenic world till ~500BC. From there the original Europe map will be used and only one Hellenic faction will exist.

The problem is that Greece and the Aegean Islands are very small to be split in ~6 parts
