I'm currently playing the byzantines, and the campaign is going swift and easy (isn't the "easy level" just a bit too easy?).

More or less accidently, I clashed with the Sicilians, and war is raging. I managed to take Sicily, but the remainings of the sicilians have fled to Malta.

I have no ship units available that can go there. I know the reason is, that byz naval units are restricted to near-coast regions, but as far as I can tell, that goes for Sicily too.

How to get to Malta?

you can get to malta with those coastal ships. You just have to make sure you take the right path. Stick to the coast and with the mid-size ships I believe you should be fine. just make sure you're putting your ships in the right region http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

From the main part of Byz empire, you will have access to the following sea regions: Aegean Sea, Mirtoon Sea, Dodecanese Sea, Sea of Crete, Eastern Med., and more. From one of those sea, you will have to expand your ship line to Nile Coast, Gulf of Sidra and Malta Channel.

Or if you send troop from Naples, you will start in Adriatic Ocean and expand you ship line to Ionian Sea, Straits of Sicily and Malta Channel.

All of the above sea regions are coastal so no need for deep water ship.

Remember that Malta is displayed in another area than it actually is Malta is so small that what we see on the map is a zoom.

Also make sure you have no enemy ships blocking the route.

Ouch, the thing that has happened is, as A Saturnus says, that I didn't see Malta is displayed in a different area, than the actual location. Most embarrasing.

And I got an "A" in geography in highschool http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the help,

Oh one other thing, when you go to Malta take plenty of troops - the Maltese are extremely rebelious I nearly lost a whole army when I invaded it - thank heavens the docks were intact for a hasty withdrawl.

but well worth it, especially if italian.

any idea how tough hospitallers are when they have extra valor? esp. the foot variety. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

take lots of archers, and they will be less of a problem that way.

I like hitting them with heavy horse in a frontal charge, and a lighter horse company from behind.

ok, you see, malta grants a valor bonus for knights hospitaller which is uniquely Italian.

they are very strong. compared to other crusader kngihts, they are superior since the hospitaller foot knights are stronger than chivalric foot knights when facing nonarmored units, having stats close to that of jomsvikings in melee.
