These guys are great,90% Yari are my fav type of army.I keep the rest as special teams,to handel Monks..

Yari are easy to control, and easier to get into an advantageous posistion.I'v won more battles by getting on top of a hill, getting on the side of my opponent, and sweeping him off the hill.(The computer dosen't try and get into the best posistion often.)Who eles likes to use mostly Melee?I throw in some dutch Muskets if I can,it costs to much money to go christian. The muskets serve, not as missile troops, but as fright troops,They are my last push to make the enemy force rout.

I like Yari, too.
But they're kind of slow, which can make a difference when your gunmen/archers are being charged by a faster enemy and you need to get in there to head the enemy off. Not too good then.

I alwayd have 2 ys units. They defeat that cavalry which is so annoying.

Useful in melee too.

While I like samurai yaris, and use quite a few in each army, I recommend you don't use 90% yaris in multi-player. An army strong in teppos and/or no-dachis will make you sorry.

Yes, 90% YS is definitely not good against people who use large amounts (90%)of MW.

Yeah,But I don't play MP,I don't trust my connection.I'm talking SP centric.Yari are great there since the computer dosen't make much more then YS and Archers.I prefer the Nodachi/Teppo/HC combo for custom.Monks are good,if I have the cash for monks intead of No-dachis.

I use YS as the backbone of my armies, but keep plenty of specialties around. Mostly the specialties are to take down the enemy's YS! In a full sixteen unit army, I'll have five or six yari units holding the center, or defending the archers. Not the Ultimate Unit, but great pieces for the price.

if you're playing against someone (or the AI) who has a penchant for Yari's, it's time to bring out the Cavalry Archers.

as far as campaign goes, some of the more northern (on the game map) regions have lots of monks, in which case Yari's aren't such a good idea.

Yea,just,on the campaigne, those lil Rebel Monks don't last long against an army 3 times the size.I take full advantage of any and every terrain bonus I can find, which can turn my YS into N-D with Armour.I like to go along the side of the map,and I always on larger battles send a couple units of Yari into the vally,to keep him from getting away when I sweep him off the hill with the Blue or Red tide.-_^ (uesugi or Mori) I whould play the Shimazu, since I love Nodachi more then I do YS,but Shimazu are in a terrible posistion to win because they don't get enough money to expand fast enough to conquer japan before the Hojo or Uesugi do.

Katasaki: I respectfully disagree about the Shimazu in campaign- you can take out the Imagawa in one or two years, and then you have only two provinces to garrison. Tech up a bit, then sweep into the Ronin-held Shikoku, and you're close to Hojo/Uesugi income, especially if you improve the farmland in Hizen, Chikugo, and Chikuzen.

Back on topic! Yari are useful, but I usually replace them with ND as soon as I can, and rely on YA to do the anti-cav work. If I can take height, the cost-effectiveness of the YA is impressive.

The problem with Shimazu is that their unit bonus applies to No-Dachi, which are a great unit, but can't be used until the Legendary Swordsman event. Sometimes I have waited decades to get this! This makes playing as Shimazu a bonus, especially once Mori's monks enter the fray and you STILL don't have the LS event.

To get back to the topic... Yari Samurai are probably the best all-round units in the game IMO. I never go anywhere without them. I like them to be able to take casualties holding the enemy while I flank with my No-Dachi. If I tried this with YA then I would have a serious rout on my hands. Later in the game I use Naginata a bit more for this purpose, but I find them to be a bit too slow and also expensive.

huh, thats strange,I can get the event to happen within 5 years.I almost always manage to kill a daiymo in battle by then. When I was Takeda,I killed the Hojo Daiymo before the third year was out.He had got seperated from his routing army and was completely surrounded by YS and YC.Hehehe,it still took 5 min to kill him,but killing a daiymo almost always gives me the event.Otherwise, just autocalc battles when you can, that can give you the event quickly as well.Like, you got the enemy trapped in his castle, when his guys are down to bout 50,attack the castle.Autocalc the battle though.

I'd debate more on the shimazus posistion for sucess, but I don't have the hard info to make a case.I'll get back to that though.
