OK so we do use Instant Messaging. How about voice chat in game ?

I have tried this with people I played online and it made the whole thing much more fun. I find Game Voice to be the best one, with it's control puck which allows you to select 4 different teams, or chat all. In a shooter or tactical team game like Amerîca's Army, Soldier of Fortune 2 etc.. you can set up Multiple teams within the same team and be able to chat selectively amongst yourself.

Tried it for MTW too. Awesome

I use Roger Wilco too.

Only downside is that it takes some CPU power, but not too much. Anyway I will soon fix that by replacing my PC, to make it more game oriented.

Thanks for voting. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I don't use it, because I've no mike to yell in. I'll look at installing tho, so at least you can yell at me when we go at it in desertflat04 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've used Roger Wilco with my dad and brother when playing NASCAR Racing 3 online. I've never tried it with STW or MTW though.

Seljuk, is Game Voice free, shareware or commercial product? I can't say I've heard of it before.

someone correct me if I'm wrong (definitely not the first time&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif..

It is $15 to liscense the software. You can buy the hardware kit that most retail shops have ($50 last time I looked.. some time ago), which includes a headset w/microphone mounted on it, and that little puck with the voice buttons to select between public and channels (one for public, team 1, team 2, etc.)

Another good one (so I am told) is Game Commander. This is more than just voice coms though. This has that, AND voice *COMMAND*. IE. You can program it so you say, in a flight sim for example, break right, and your wingman does it. (You set up the voice command, and what key commands that will activate) I used it once at a friends, and it was pretty cool. Microsoft has a similar technology, if anyone has played Sub Command, it is included with that. But to the best of my knowledge, the game must be programmed to work with the MS version, but it is more than juts game commands... can dictate letters, or even start windows apps with it, so long as you create enough voice cues. REALLY adds to the immersion of games, IMO, when you tell the AI players what to do, instead of push a bunch of buttons.

Hi All

Thx for your replies.

HHHHHOWLLLLLLLLLLLLER I have played some MTW games with Alrowan using Roger Wilco.

The normal games conditions were as follows:

- 3vs3
- Rocky Desert
- Summer
- Our team (defenders) of three was on Roger Wilco
- Alrowan is on 56k, lives in Australia.
- I am on 512k DSL in Luxembourg, Europe.
- The 3rd person was in London, UK ALSO on 56k
- The Londoner was hosting RW on 56k

We experienced 0 lagg issues, had a total laugh. Fact we demolished the enemy so badly we set to attack each other in free for all. We were laughing about it for days. Anyway my point is that we had 2 56kers on these games, one from OZ. The Voice chat was hosted by a 56ker and we had no lagg issues.

Erik LOL http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif you should hear Alro yell LOL http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif still we gonna crack that map .

Greg some more info on Game Voice.
Game Voice is a gaming software that enables you to:

Recognise voice commands in game

e.g

A. You have a unit of Alans selected.
You say into your microphone:
Wedge - your Alan Mercs go into wedge.

B. You have a unit of Order Foot selected
You say into your microphone:
Hold - your Order Foot go into hold position

C. You are playing Sub Command (submarine Simulation)
You say into your microphone:
All Ahead Flank - your Akula's engines go flank speed

D. You are playing Operation Flashpoint (FPS)
You are squad leader. You say into your microphone:
All Engage - your squad members engage @ will

You can create your own commands and the software records and recognises the commands in game.

Use voice chat, in game or out of game.

Game Voice uses MSN messenger for a contact list for chat.
Basically Game Voice acts like any other chat program with the exception that is made specially for gaming in mind. The sound quality is excellent, it does use maybe 4-6% of CPU usage for a P3 500 like mine. That's a considerable amount of power, however is compensated by excellent sound quality.

One of the issues in online voice gaming is the voice lagg that occurs. On Roger Wilco there is considerable voice lag, even when I am playing with Danish players (close enough). On Game Voice one can feel the voice lagg but only when the others are as far away... as Australia.

e.g of voice lagg on Roger Wilco:
guy in Denmark Watch out sniper ahead
I walk ahead past my teamate and receive a bullet in my head, collapse to the floor, and one second after that I hear him saying
Watch out sniper ahead.

This is the kind of voice lag that occurs on Roger Wilco, but on Game Voice this is reduced significantly.
At least with European players there is no voice lagg on Game Voice.
However on Roger Wilco there is voice lagg even if I play with a guy in Germany (75 kms from Luxembourg).

The voice lagg does not slow down the game performance in any way. It only slows the rate at which voice is transmitted.

You can download the free version, Game Voice share. GV Share only enables you to chat with others having the same program. Alternatively you can purchase the full version, which comes with a sleek headset, with an excellent noise cancelling mic. It also comes with a control puck on which there are some buttons to choose whether the GV is in voice command mode e.g wedge or in chat mode. Then you can also select teams to chat with.

e.g
In Operation Flashpoint you have 8 players to a team. 4 of them can be allocated as Red, and the other as Blue. Red is fire team, when we see the enemy Red will engage. Blue is maneuver team, Blue will maneuver to outflank the enemy. (example). Now you can click the members for Red onscreen and allocate them to a button on the puck. You do the same for Blue team. Finally you can do the same for all the people in the game, provided everyone has some version of GV. Once in game you can click a button to talk to RED, talk to BLUE, or talk ALL TEAM, or talk to ALL IN GAME.

NEAT

Roger Wilco is a much simpler and also an excellent program but IMO it does not have the potential Game Voice does. The upside of Roger Wilco is that since it's totally free more people have it. They usually use a $2 mic though which reduces the quality greatly.

Finding people to play with using either program is not a problem.

Game Voice is exactly that plus voice chat, as stated in post above.

With Game Voice you can:

- Voice Chat
- Issue voice commands to your games

Huh, I didn't know the MS product did have voice command. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Maybee I need to look into getting it instead of game commander than... since it is only available online, and I have seen the MS sets in many retail stores... definitely more users (And, for the same price, you get the controller and a headset mic.)

I am currently using RW. I will check out GV soon. It does sound better than RW.

In game voice communication is great. In stead of having to stop controlling troops for a moment to type in the message (consider that I am very bad at typing), I can just say it while maintaining total control of my troops. With the feature of voice command in SP like GV, it's even better.

The thing that I like most about voice chat is that I don't have to spend lots of money on long distance phone call.

Thanks for all that information Seljuk. If I ever get serious enough about playing online, Game Voice seems like the way to go.

Great info, fellas. I have a much better understanding of what to expect with those programs. I assume they use VoIP (Voice over IP) technology? In other words, the voice signal is separate from the games you use it in, not piggybacking on the game server?

I've played 2v2 & 3v3's where I'm certain my opponents have used GV or RW. They seem MUCH more coordinated in their movements, while my allies & I stumble around on the field.

Or maybe it's just the 3-4 beers I had http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Shahed

56k is no problem, for voice chat. See above.

But about BT I agree totally.
Their performance has been pretty sad on the broadband front, IIRC from the financial news.

By the way does anyone know the stock ticker ?

Look here's a clip from www.bloomberg.com

London, May 12 -- BT today unveiled a national strategy for public and private sector partnerships to extend the potential of high-speed broadband communications around the UK and bring it within reach of more people living in rural areas.

and they are doing this NOW in 2003 ????? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
