well, I'm 36 and I bought MTW because I was interested in getting a PC game that didn't require me to have the fast fingers I had when I was in my teens and playing Intellivision. The last game I had bought before MTW was the RPG oriented Eye of the Beholder back in the early/mid 90s. I like the strategy aspect and being able to build things to get certain things

Prefer the turn-based/hybrid games over classic RTS-- just could never get past the click-fest aspects. I'm 16. I play a lot of computer games, but I've never been really into clickfest RTSes and I don't play FPS games that much. I've always loved turn-based strategy games though, along with tactical squad-based (ooh, JA2...) and some RPGs. This heavily influences my playing style for M:TW... I play mostly single player now, where I can control the pace of battles. When I get bored with SP I expect to move on to playing multiplayer.

the commodore 64 was the leading console many many many years ago. Its games were in magnetic cassetes and you had to wait ages for them to load. It also had basic installed in it. Its name comes from the fact that it had 64 WHOLE KB of RAM http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif if you go to ebay and make a search you can see one. Ahhh the young ones , they do not know their gaming history anymore :/

alright since were, being honest, never had a c-64, or a vic 20, but i remember them, my first actual pc, was an apple 2c, with 128k of memory, and a single 5.25 floppy and a crappy green monitor. my first games were ultima 2, wizardry the original, and f-15 strike eagle... back in the old days, when bypassing copy protection meant owning a paper hole puncher... and preventing overwites, meant sticking a piece of tape over the notch... scary thing is i still had it as of five years ago, never used it, but it was in storage. flood destroyed it though, that would have been fun to break it out and see if any of my old programs workes..

I'm 21 and I had a Commodore 64. A few years ago i ran an emulator and checked out some old games for novelty. I have to say I think the quality of programming is really impressive taking into count what they had to use to create them. I had a tape deck while my friend had a floppy drive, mine made up by for that though by having a small stack of cartridges which would load very fast by comparison.

The long loading time was not a complete drawback, there was plenty of time to play other games or watch some tv, get some food or even ride to the shop if it was a particularly big game.

My first one was the ZX Spectrum and boy did I love it. Load times were only about 5 minutes. After the screeching sound of the loading had almost driven my father insane for a year or two, I discovered that I didn't need to connect the ear plug and thus didn't need to play that noise. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif Some of the major games were The Manager (better graphics than Championship Manager http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ), Hobbit and Elite. I must say I'm suprised at the demographic around here. I've been a few other gaming message boards and most people tend to be in their teens.

Anyway I'm 25. The Commdore 64 was my first experience with a computer. My dad had one, and I used to mess with it all the time. The only thing I ever did on though was play games. The loading times were a major pain, especially with games that had more than 1 disk.

One that I can remember was D&D: Pool of Radiance. There were 4 disks and you needed to swap like crazy while travelling to different areas. You spent half your time while playing it waiting for it load. Still had a blast though.

The Atari 2600 was my first experience with gaming.

I can't say my first computer, but my first strategy game was Command and Conquer. I spent hours just watching my GDI guys on the first level, wondering how to move them and thinking Wow, they look like real army dudes. Eventually I found out how to move them one at a time, and later, I learned how to lasso. I never read the instructions or any sort of thing, which I learned a lesson from. Obviously I've changed since then.

and i remember spending £700 (approx $1000) well my mum and dad did, on a trs-80 microcomputer in 1977, which had wait for it a whole 4k of memory, the ability to produce graphics in two colours, black or white, a whole line of up to 40 characters, state of the art block graphics, when poking around the computer was the only way to produce a decent picture and I had to pay an extra £40 for the special tandy cassette deck, which was also used to produce sound, albeit a clicking sound as the cassette motor was turned on and off, so that i could load programs and also save them, not to mention that i also had to use my portabel tv as a display monitor

sigh they were the good old days, gaming has gone so down hill sinced those days, all this 3d colour surround sound techy stuff that requires you have gigabytes of hard drive and megabytes of memory :-)

OK ShaiHulud, I&#39;m up from my nap now. I take 3 a day now that I am in my twilight years. As I remember you and I got into a pi&#036;&#036;ing contest about who had geezer bragging rights. It makes me tired, all you kids talking about the new tech like C64s and such.

Well back when I was in university we played with mini computers not micro computers, mostly because there were no micro&#39;s yet, other than in calculators, and they were only 4-bit processors and don&#39;t count.

My first computer game was on a Data General Nova. The computer lab had two that had a whole 32KB of RAM (that&#39;s KB, not MB)so you could play Supper Star Trek. The graphics were all ASCII where you would pilot a ship around and shoot klingons. Each turn took about 5 min. Shoot, wait, shoot, wait etc. It had a 16 bit processer bit sliced over 4 massive chips. The whole box was built into a desk and you had to boot it by toggling in an octal code on the front pannel. But hey, it had an 8 in. floppy that could hold 256K of data.

The other machine that we had access to was a DEC PDP11. We played a lot of Hunt the Wumpus. First you had to load up BASIC on punched paper tape, then load the game. This could take up to a half an hour depending if the tape broke or not. No monitor, no keyboard, just a teletype machine and a paper tape reader-puncher. We would stay up all nite chasing wumpuses (or is it wumpi) through the cave.

I got into war games a few years later with the Avalon Hill hex type paper games and games like Kriegspiel. I even did some lead minitures. I have been playing ever since.

I&#39;m nearly 39 and started with a ZX 81. I played Space Invaders or something like this. I typed the programms with the formidable keyboard of the ZX 81. Because I had no suitable recorder I had to do this every time I wanted to play http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif (which was not so often, hrmm).

Then I paused a little bit in PC gaming until recently, when I bought the direct successor of the ZX 81 named P4.
And I&#39;m still wondering why the PC can create such funny little coloured pictures. Perhaps there are little busy men inside.

Other games I like are SuddenStrike (in the form of the latest RWM and APRM) and MechWarrior (ok, I know, it&#39;s embarrassing). But because I&#39;m interested in military history before 1500 AD, MTW is my lonely favorite.

One remark: It would be nice to have some more detail on ages under 18 and over 36. I mean, all the age groups between 18 and 36 are too small. Whether one is 11 or 18, he/she is in the same group. 36? 54? same group too. But 22, 25 and 28 are all in different groups.

On top of that it makes me feel very old to have to click the oldest group http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif. Recent investigations made clear that a lot of people over 45 play games, too.

I&#39;m 44 but I still think I&#39;m 23. I have a wife, a job and two kids. My wife tolerates my gaming pretty well... in fact, she&#39;s the one who bought me M:TW for Christmas. I&#39;ve always been a game addict, and always will be. My first computer game was Ultima IV on my Commodore 128. At least, that&#39;s the first game I had that was played on an actual computer (as opposed to the old Atari game system my family had back in the &#39;70s).

I don&#39;t care for an age on the net (even in RL, I&#39;m liberal :) , with one exclusion - when I&#39;v met my girl on the net. The most absurd is - he lives 20minutes tram away. Curse of a city, people do not meet others on the street (only pasing by), but on international network system :/

I&#39;m 35.

We had our own version of MTW back in the 1970s and 1980s. We would setup our plastic soldier armies and use rubber bands to knock them down.

We later advanced to placing them on chessboards and making up rules for advancment, attack and defense.

Unfortunately, my little sister got bored with these sorts of games. And the neighbor that used to play with me left for East Malaysia.

I then stuck to reading books.

When the old computer game - The Art of War came out - I played it for 48 hours straight.

We used to use marbles to knockdown our plastic soldiers. Of course that was WW2 soldiers. The really hard ones were the machine gunners lying prone - you almost had to get some terrain like a pillbox, barbwire or tree trunk involved to flip them over. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ht_surrender.gif
