Byz in Woods

I kept on having people comments about Byz (Var.Guard. or Byz.Inf.) in woods are good, but couldn't find how to arrive to that conclusion. From stat files, there is no mention of special ability of being in the woods (except for cav have reduced combat and spears lose rank support bonus).

Could anyone clarify this please?

Well, my guess is that Byz in woods arent extra strong, but that their counter is extra weak there.

Cav is main enemy from byz inf and ofc. you know about the penalty they get for fighting in the forest. So Byz is harder to fight in the woods http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif.

I have not heard of any special bonuses for Byz inf and VG in the woods. I simply guess that these two units, being good sword/axe infantry, will perform quite admirably in the trees against units like spears and cav.

i think there weaker in the woods or is it just my woodsman ship skills?

never been bet in a wood fight.

i thought the trees broke up their large ranks and let ur smaller ranks take them 1 on 1 thus giving u an unintentional but true to life advantage.

Its basiclly what you said KY you see the woods break the cavs charge which is there advantage then they are ok at melee and are facing 2:1 odds so they lose.
Spears are broken up in the trees so their rank bonus fails.
that is why Militia sarges and swordmen can kill them easily in woods

OK, I guess then swords/axes has advantage because of the other two types (cav and spears) are weaker in woods. Thanks guys.

Fair Glorfindel, I thought it was obvious the credit came from you. The thread was not long enough, and I didn't say "I figured it out by myself" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif . I was simply putting the conclusion in the thread.

i was refering to byz vs MAA militia etc. not horses.

Without reading the other posts- byz are referred to by me as good in the woods b.c. they have very good swords which are good in woods b.c. spears and cav suffer in it.

Do spears really lose their rank bonus in forests? I understood it's _not_ actually removed, the trees just mess up the formation in some places, but not all men are affected.
