What are you guys using in MP? I seem to win a decent amount of fights but my casualty rates are way to high. I'm still trying to learn what specific units are best against other units.

What are the purpose of heavy cav? I never really found them that usefull in STW either. Unless you can flank with them they are useless in a fight. I prefer lighter cheaper cav for harassment and chasing down archers.

What are the best units (performance and value) for head on fights with other men and what is best against cav?

the monkey men hands down.....

nope i think that the chivalric seargents are the best for me with high honour/valour (for the newbies) they are an extrmely courages unit, they hold there ground, they attack like beats stung by wasps.

one other unit is good if you can afford it and that is i forget the name um um um.......... those men on horses with white cape drooped over them and they have lancers. Anyway they are the elite harraser and unit killer of all time with high honour they can beat 4 unit of other cavs together as well as killing cannon crew fast so that you can make a quick getaway before your oppoent sends an annoying single unit of chivs doen to get ya.

I use Chivalric Sergeants as my defensive wall - they hold a lot, very good defence. I prefer them over Order Foot Soldiers - they're cheaper and ultimately can have valour upgraded (3/4 in 7-10k matches) That way I can hold enemy troops why getting my cavalry and shock troops behind and beat that annoying 'knight' rush of some. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

As shock troops I use Vikings, Militia Sergeants (with high valour they can be used offensively altough they're mainly defensive) and Feudal/Chivalric man-at-arms. I also use 1/2 feudal foot knights for the rear punch.

And 3-5 cavalry - normally Alan merc cavs but also use a variety of different troops depending on faction.

The Danish Panda Army likes to field Fanatics and Vikings boosted to Valour 4. Eight units of infantry, very hard especially in the charge, very difficult to rout... mmmm... nice. And plenty of money left for some cavalry or comedy artillery.

Yup, that's my army ... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif Tremendous charge and attack values + morale. I like fielding some Chivalric Sergeants instead of Fanatics - they will give a good defensive punch. (against the typical Knightey rush and gives me the time to flank)

better improve your game with weaker armies first. superunits never adress the need to improve skill.

Any advice on the use of heavy cav? Sometimes I like using the Cat but they are so slow they are a bit limited.

Do you guys use heavy cav to attack or just to fill your lines when the enemy is breaking through?

Heavy cavalry give you one good punch. After that you have to take it slow with them to avoid exhaustion. Cav that can't run due to exhaustion is not very useful not to mention the severe combat and morale penalties that exhaustion incurs.

Thanks for the tips. Any other words of wisdom?

What are the best ranged units? Do you guys mix archers and crossbows/pavs?

Well, you should mix longbows with arbs.

I'm still asking these questions myself, but I tried some advice about heavy cavalry.

In a thread here and at the ezboard, someone posted a tactic where you put your hvy cavs in a long thin line in a spread formation, charge some infantry and wait until the cavalry line begins melee. Then switch them to close formation. They will wrap around the enemy unit, thus getting some flanking bonuses.

I tried this and it worked for me. You can even charge Spearmen head-on, if necessary, and eventually rout them (but with few survivors).

This is a messy maneuver, but it has given my knights something useful to do. The greatest benefit is against expensive melee troops.
