I have a 5 Star General, he has always been victoriuos, yet suddenly, after guarding serbia (and resting) for the last five years he develops Good Runner?

He's never lost a battle, has never even been routed on the field, yet he develops Good Runner???

despite all his fighting he has no other combat V & V's - so this is a big nuisance...
I can't commit him anywhere because of the detriment,

add this to 2 other 4 Star Generals who developed the Temper V, which SHOULD increase his Dread, but also seems to grant a minus to command and a minus to morale and I'm annoyed,
Now - while I am peace with almost everyone, I have lost my 3 Best Generals...

I think I'd better grab a couple of 2 Star's and go pick a fight......

I really hate it when leaders have contradictory virtues and vices. How can you be a Coward AND a Fine Leader?

that's not contradictory at all. in fact, i bet his soldiers think he's the greatest leader ever for not getting into a fight. :-)

I know, this is a pain, and seeing your uber general get his nice bonus ruined is specifically irritating

YET this is a feature I like because :
- it's human/ logical, somebody enjoying many victories will develop vices, from complacency to cowardice : yes, you can be full of valour when you are a young and poor general on his way to the top, and later on become much more careful, precisely because you now have much to loose (your titles, familly, etc.)
- it gives more dynamism to the game
- it balances the bonus due to the fact that generals don't die of old age

The only bitching I have about the V&Vs is that my top-notch Byzantine diadochoi turn out to be inbred, guilty of incest, adultery and foremost loonies who think they are the offspring of some weird camel or hippo... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

...not to mention those born cowards... tsk... tsk... tsk...

Sure you never auto resolved a fight he was in, even a small peasant rebellion? I've gotten good runner autoresolving fights before, which is annoying but understandable as the AI can be pretty reckless with it's generals.

I hate getting stuff like inbred after a few years. How do you acquire that vice if you are not born with it anyway?

That's quite easily explainable. Maybe the general in question had intelligent advisors that managed to keep his afflictions a secret and help him with important decisions. As he got more famous he got a little big for his boots and started to ignore them or his fame was such that gross ineptitude could no longer be hidden.

Just, y'know, fill in the gaps.

no, i neve autoresolved anything,

it's a pity too, he was on his way to being very good,
ah well, i chose a couple of 2 stars and picked a fight with England, until the Pope tolde me to lay off,
then went and had a nice little chat with denmark - oddly the pope didn't give 2 hoots about denmark,
and then i picked another brawl with Novgorod and i now have a couple of fine 4 star's who suit me nicely,

Demark and Nvogorod are gone,
but the UK? - they hate me...

I am still annoyed at the Temper vice having hidden effects!!!

That is because the Pope only keeps track of one warning and one excomm. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

But I agree, I had a great (all kind of great V&V's but none to Morale) general fight a major battle across a doublebridge, he was vicious against the poor Almohads. But after the battle he had gotten Good Runner as well. That was not very good as he had Eager to Retreat and Merciless (got that in the battle as well) on top of that. So I had to disband him... He was a Rank 8 general with 9 in Dread.
Before him I lost my best general (even better than the other guy) during a siege (I thought the general would suvive as the last man)...
My two best generals ever were gone within a few years.

Such are the fortunes of war http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I like the way my generals, kings and princes are inbred, drunken, torturous maniacs who rape their daughters and are more often known for their bad traits than their virtuos heroics.

Very much in the spirit of the middle ages!

An English Lord from the 14th or 15th century, I forget his name, used to drink two bottles of wine, red and white for each meal (not unlike a certain Pope I also forgot ;( ), breed with his daughters, hunt wild geese during the winter without clothes with bown and arrow and he married a lamb.

They were some bad nutcases I tell you.

Lets get this topic away from the "animals" and back on track? please?
(before one of the mods see it...)
http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Lets see if i understand this,

The pope only keeps track of one warning,
so if i attack france, and get warned off by the pope,
then i am free to slaughter any other faction "free of charge"??

As far as I know, the one warning the pope keps track of, means you get warned once for attacking the first faction and then automatically excommunicated the next time you attack a catholic faction (even a different faction than the one you were warned against).

No, the warning is specific.

The warning only has effect on that faction, so indeed you are free to attack anybody else.
I quite certain that is how it is, and even if it isn't then I'm sure there will ever only be one excomm. So if the HRE gets Excommed (as they almost always do) go kill whatever you want.

Yeah the pope has a bad memory & can only track 1 warning/excomm. I was sinkin the italian fleet when the pope told me to back off. I did & took out spain & the HRE in one move & he didn't say a thing. Now he is going to be invaded with my elite army of sap's, swiss hal's, arbalests & hordes or chiv knights all from toulose http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

barocca

Yep,
one warning seems to be it,
you then have 9 years to attack any other Catholic faction "free of charge"
very handy too,

so i waited the ten years and the French launched another single ship in the channel, which blocked all my trade, so i sank it and attacked 2 of the remaining 3 french euro provnces,

(thay have massive Arabian/African holding thanks to me "contributing" to their Crusades) http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/Forum7/HTML/002039.html

The French Abandoded the 2 well developed provinces - go figure, and the pope warned me off,
so i attacked HRE and am currently happily working my way through their lands - they were getting hammered (as are the Byzantines and Poles) by Hungary anyway...
No warning by the Pope :-)

evry time the pope tells me to leave
English hem or with whome ever I'm
causing his wrath ,the bugger always dies
a few years later.I wonder if it has something to do with assassins ,caus when he dies so ends your problem.
