View Full Version : lib I HATE CRUSADES!
Well, they are really ruining my gamefun. I have about half the map conquered and I didnt watch out for one turn and now guess what happened (for the 304th time)? Someone put a crusade in one of my provinces with 5 full strengh armys. Because of guard duties I couldnt remove the armys and after 3 rounds or so nearly nothing was left of them. What a crap, I need decates to build an decent army only to have it destroyed completely by a friendly crusade.
Duh, why did you let it in? You have a choice you know. I NEVER let crusades in my kingdom, the pope be damned!

Well, they didnt ask, I never go the screen with "want to pass". And it would be pretty difficult to beat that 48 units army...
My provinces are all mixed up with England, France, HRE and Spain - i have at least one and as many as 3 crusades marching through some province somewhere almost every turn,
I simply have my budget setup to retrain depleted units, and also have a large peasant contingent in my armys - i never let them fight, they are simply to "bulk" the crusades,
and it seems (cannot guarantee) but it seems to reduce the pilfering of my best units...
a plus side is my pilferred units get retrained with all the latest tech :-
weapons, armour, valour and morale upgrades...
( i don't hate the crusades, they are just a nuisance, as they were at the time I'd imagine... )

and what a nuisance, or so i thought...
the French loooove starting a crusade in Flanders, aimed somewhere in the Med',
and they send it across the channel into Wessex looking for volunteers,
the bad part was i was at war with France, and every time i held Wessex with only a minimal garrison the Main French army would "piggyback" the crusade,
the problem for me was the Crusade Army was also available to the French for the battle!!
As you can imagine I was forced to hold Wessex with a huge army, because the Crusade would pop back into Flanders, then to Wessex, then to Flanders, then to Wessex - WHY?
because of ship movements in the Med',
when there was an enemy ship between them and their destination they'd pop back to Flanders to go via land, as soon as the ship moved out of the way they'd hop into Wessex to take advantage of the port.
This could happen many times over, really sucking the life out of my armies UNTIL i hit on a brilliant idea,
instead of putting my bravest and best in Wessex, i'd "renew" my entire army (scattered all across europe - if a province revolts i'll hop in and grab it!)
So i started building fresh new units, and all my peasantry, clansmen, vikings and urban militia went into Wessex, the Crusade would suck them up (meaning no good quality mercs for the AI to hire)
and the Crusade has a much better chance of doing some serious damage to the muslim/orthodox factions!!
(i have seen so many fail dismally...)
So when a Crusade marches through my lands all the units i would normally be disbanding go into it's path and off to fight for the Pope and Glory!!!
I've even hired mercs, and put them in the way, just to "give" the AI's Crusade more power at it's destination...
as soon as the crusade sucks part of them up and moves on I'll put the remainder back in it's path again...until either the unit is all Crusading, or the Crusade leaves my lands - whereupon the remnants get disbanded...
I'll also "let" a couple of H3 generals join - if i have some to spare...

Lahn, if I follow that correctly, you never got a pop-up asking you if you would allow the Crusade to enter your territory? The likliest reason for that is you hitting while the AI is moving units at the start of the turn. If you to ignore that, it assumes you have answered "yes" to the Crusade question. So when a Crusade is anywhere near your borders, you have to sit through the AI movement and wait for the dialogue box.
Of course, you still need enough troops to beat the living daylights out of the Crusade once you refuse it entry, but that's your problem. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
I have grown to hate Crusades too. Because of the fucked up code and naval routes being cut I also have enjoyed Crusading armies who just hang around, taking it easy, in my provinces instead of moving towards their target. Sucking my border armies dry.

They WERE a menace in real life and they ARE a menace in the game, BUT THAT IS JUST SIMPLY TAKING IT TOO FAR!"# Nowhere in history does it state that "When a crusading army came to your country, it took half of your troops with it no matter what you did and then your enemies smashed you." Do I have to destroy my Christian bro's to end this endless horror show?

Does it help if you maintain a region's Catholic zeal below 50%?
Yes, it helps very much.
If you have zeal < 10%, chances are you do not loose any good men (only a few peasants), and the crusade is vanished in 1-2 turns. Zeal is THE factor when dealing with crusades (yours and other).
GAH!
How do youz lower zeal?
GAH!

get some inquisitors in your lands
at first religious zeal will increase, hoever, as the inquistor spirals out of control zeal will plummet
usually this takes several turns
If you have set up your trade routes correctly then you should be able to weather a Crusade hanging around,
perhaps a quick little war with the offending blockade fleet?
OR simply bite the bullet and if neccessary build plenty of cheap troops and plonk them in the border provinces to bulk up the crusade,
i am unsure if there is a limit on how large Crusades can get, but i have Never seen one go past Three Full Pages!
this is why i will also hire mercs and drop them in the path,
to fill a few more unit slots quickly!
(the last crusade that came through i was in the process of disbanding urbans and archers, so the crusade got PLENTY of both
- stops them becoming mercs and filling all the merc slots with pathetic units too
- a Crusade is never successfull bulked with peasants only...)
[and if the crusade was dependent on my spelling abilities...well!!]

watch the swear words.
in the future, threads that start as complaints without being constructive (ie. let's hear some ideas to counter your dissatisfaction) will be deleted.
thankfully, some of the other members have turned this around into something informative.
