The compass has been invented, but my caravels are still coastal. Its close to 1300 and I can't get into the deep sea? Something is wrong with that. I understand that some ships need gunpowder to build. But caravels say they are deep sea ships. whats the deal???

I believe this is a bug that is addressed in the upcoming patch.

Just a thought, are these ships you trained before or after the compass event? It is possible that you need to train them after to reap the benefits.

Some were built pre-compass, some after... all restricted to coastal. I saw an egyptian pre-gunpowder ship in the deep sea. When it moved back to the coast I checked its info panel and it had the deep sea attribute.

So either the Caravel description is incorrect, or its supposed to be deep-sea. 1330 seems way late to finally be able to sail away from the coast (Just now getting cogs), but I'm no historian. When did medieval ships start cruising away from the coast?

ah bugger. i've been hit with this too...At first i thought compass was a damned building, but i remember the popup almost a century ago.

I'm also just about to hit 1300, i have Fortresses with practically every building but no sight of any building with compass a pre-requisite.

Anyone know a way around the bug? I'll try destroying my shipyards/rebuilding and stuff, but i don't think that'll work i'm afraid.BTW, does this bug affect all the games i'll play before next patch fixes it?[/list]

Same here. I've had the Compass event (I'm in 1180 or so) but my Caravels are still coastal. I have Citadels with Shipwrights and Dockyards, but still can't build the buildings required to build the next level of ships (Shipmakers Guild I think).

So it looks like you have to wait for gunpowder, build a foundry, and only then can you build a Shipmaker's Guild? That seems odd.

If you open the units file and change the caravel stats 1,3,3,1,0, with 2,3,3,1,0,

any new caravels you build will be deep water ships, even without the compas

The compass doesn't seem to effect any thing on ship.

I notice that Italian, Byzantine, Sicilian. Papist don't even have any deep water ship.

Almohad, Egyptian, Turk are the first to have deep water ship (baggala, level 2 ship)

the file I meant is crusaders_unit_prod11, located in the total warfolder.
start with making a copy if something goes wrong.
open it in notepad and search for caravel. The last part of the caravel block is "1,3,3,1,0, caravel sunk message", change this to "2,3,3,1,0, caravel sunk message". save and exit

Gecko, or someone that's tried that already - would that work for a saved game?

Just curious. I'd rather not have deeps sea faring Caravels until...well, until it's randomly granted to me...

This change in the file only affect units produced after the change. All caravels built before stays shallow water ships and all built after are deep water
