To be honest I've been happy enough with culverns/siege cannons never to feel the need to make the extra effort to develop serpentines. Has anyone? and if so are they any good?

I like 'em in threes
I had a serpentine be my army/banner general once (Valour 7!). I nicknamed his unit "The Finger of Death"

Sorry about the misspelling in the title

So Solopsist, does that mean you reckon that they're better than culverns and siege cannon?
They fire faster, and allegedly have a better accuracy.

Also, they can turn, and I don't think culverins and siege cannons can, but don't know, cause I've always taken serps http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif They're worth it imo.

I haven't found a problem with minimum range, unlike some of the earlier models.

Due to rate of fire, best general killers.
If you are confident of victory, they are one of the most fun units.Every shot is like a little lottery draw - where will it fall ?

the can also hit the entire battlefield, which makes it good for softening up a camping opponent.

Culverns can turn. I did a few experiments with Serpentines last night. I didnt think they would be that great so I gave the opposing french defence four of them. I was very mistaken, those things would lob balls directly in front of my formations and the ball would bounce and roll really low to the ground taking out even more of my guys. I now think they are a worthwhile weapon against infantry formations, not to great against stone castle walls though.
normally I would only use siegeweapons and cannons during defense, but I tend to bring along the serpentines along in the attack. I leave them all the way in the back and attack with the rest of my army. Meanwhile the cannons blast away nicely at the enemy. I don't know if they are very efficient, but it looks nice when the cannonballs hit inbetween the enemy lines...and some actually seem to die because of them.

Culverins are still the best, a 45kg ball of stone flying at you is quite something.
