View Full Version : lib Manage Armies in SP
I found "tidy up units after battle" not useful, so I always check it off. Here is why.
1. If you drop a no-armour unit onto an armour unit, you got an armour unit This is a bug I believe http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif I got armour upgrade cheaply that way;
2. Although the remaining units are decimated, they usually have good valours and good loyalty. I always transport them out to a "safezone" (if I expect rebellion or reconquest by the enemies) while sending in fresh full force troops. After a while, the safezone has enough troops for manual recombination. I would be careful to merge units of same valour together, wouldn't mind to have some units not fully manned (55 archers are almost as effective as 60 archers).
3. Scan the decimated units for good accumen and good loyalty. Often when the unit leader dies in battle (I use to send the governor I don't like to battle to get him killed), some good guys may pop up. These guys are as good as any full-staff units to govern a province, with smaller maintenance cost.
It is more work, but time is on my side http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

the TW games keep track of every little soldier, so it doesn't matter whether the unit has an armour icon or not, say you transport 40 armourless troops into a unit of 20 armoured (upgraded) units, the game knows that there are 20 men in the unit which have an armour upgrade & 40 which don't, it calculates accordingly, same with the valour level...

1 & part of 2. MTW records valour and equipment for EACH MAN in your army. The overall effects of valour are averaged, and in terms of equipment the majority is displayed. So you can put a no equipment unit onto a full equipment one and seemingly get more guys with full equipment.
However part of 2 yes that is a good idea if you have a large empire and lots of units of the same kind. You can create some seriously good units like this.
3 Yes, again good idea but i tend to have a good supply of decent generals and governors after a few years into the game, partially as a benefit of building a strong royal line.

damn you mith got me by a few secs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Thanks for correcting me. By saying something, I learn new things. But I believe it is still a bug of some sort, because I dropped a 40 no-armour on a 15 armour and got 55 armour guys (showed it on the icon). The average would be no-armour I would think. Will double check to see if that's true or I was halicinating the first time.

Perhaps the armour icon represents the general.

i also have turned off the auto tidy, as it seems to help me not lose as many heirs, and some of my nobles. it seems that during auto tidy troops, it doesn't take into account the exsistance of an important person. notice when you manually combine troops that both have nobles it will leave you with two units still, even if the total of the two units equal less then one full unit, as the game won't throw a noble into another nobles unit. it does if you are on auto tidy. as for haveing units with lesser armor because of combineing a unit with armor with a unit without armor, i take the time to retrain. upgradeing a unit without armor that is full is free.

Well, damn, so that's why whenever I retrain experienced units their valor goes straight into the toilet...that depresses me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Mith... I though like that too back before MI, but then I noticed that the logfiles had every soldier in a combined unit having armour, while only one had had that before. So the bug is there. But I haven't checked for MTW.
Still it is great to combine high Valour units, the survivors of a hard battle are often very good. I once almost withstood the Almohads with only 500 men and only 113 survived, but dman if they weren't all Valour 7-8 (general gave 3 of those). When the Almohads tried to storm the castle I lost 6 men and they lost 1300... hehehe can't tell you how great high valour men at arms are at fighting at the gates.
I believe the "display graphic" is what the best equipt soldier has. In my case, I had a 2 man unit of fuedal spears, black sword/silver shield. I added them to a 80+man unit same type but no upgrades (sword/shield). The graphic stayed the same black sword/silver shield. They were heading back for retraining/upgrading. If this was done on auto, I would have missed that most of the unit was missing the upgrades.
