I don't often post here but this just had to be said, I was playing Spain Early, Hard. I launched an early attack on the Almohads and attacked with a half Jinette army, and was outnumbered about 3 to 1. I did it just for a laugh really. But I did some absolutely amazing out flanking with them, being super dooper fast they just scooted out of the way of anything that tried to stop them and hit them in the flank. They surrounded and annihilated, they did it again and again. In fact they were so successful that they only lost about 100 men compared to the 1200 strong force I was facing. I mean they killed or captured all, bar one or two of the opposition. When the Elmos came back to take their province back with loads of troops, I did the same. I crushed them so utterly that they had almost no troops left, and I couldn't take their provinces fast enough: I just didn't have the man power to occupy their lands. I have never felt so proud of my millitary genius http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
The reason that I have said this is that people seem to have a bit of a problem using Jinettes. They are more than decent in hand to hand, they have a very effective ranged weapon and because they are fast they can outrun most things and if they get on the bad side of spears, can pull back and shout at them a bit. Great stuff.
edit: what a prat an Englishman and my spelling is so poor that I have even mucked up the title of the post, boy do I feel silly http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

Thing is, any unit can perform spectacularly if people use them for the role they were assigned. Whenever you see "Soandso unit sucks" it's because they tried to charge peasants into a group of CMAA or attacked enemy chivalric sergeants with their hobilars. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Well I've never even managed to get them to fire even once.
How the friggin heck do you get them to fire???
How many rows should you use?
Hand to hand, they got their ass handed to them on a plate.
Given the general coolness of the Koreans in MI, I really would like to get to use skirmishers, but I juat can't get them to fire, then they get charged and rout...

how do you get them to fire?
thats a silly question, you simply click on the enemy when your cursor turns into a bowmthats all
btw i still think jinettes are much like murabitin but with mounted on horses, probably the best light cav available for the spaniards.
Well the arrow never seems to go green.
The range must be smaller than the range at which units go into a charge when attacking.

arrse - try switching the jinettes from skirmish to engage at will, or get them to fire on a unit that is already in battle with another. they seem to take a while to be ready to fire, so mostly enemy infantry will turn and charge them, causing them to run away before firing if you are in skirmish. just make sure they don't then get charged by spearmen.
they need micromanaging, and i don't find them that good, but it is great fun using a mix of them and hobilars with some spearmen against slow moving infantry, you can circle round and round, hit flanks, attack generals hiding in the rear, draw off the enemy defensive troops with one unit while another goes and has their archers for breakfast... very rewarding units if you can be bothered.

Their javelins are pretty effective WHEN they get to use them, aye. As was stated before me, they take micro-managing. Their weapon range is slight and, unfortunately, very closely falls within their skirmish range, thus they run when their targeted unit gets into range. You must attack a distracted unit (in battle, moving in another direction, etc) and have them set to 'Engage at Will'.
Also, as was mentioned before, I've had their asses handed to them by the most paltry competition, in hand-to-hand. I'm not one of those who holds them in high regard. Others seem to be more effective in their use.

you can also put them in hold formation instead of skirmish, but that's dangerous due to their short range. best to use them against units that are allready engaged in combat. also efective when useing them in pairs. in skirmish, the targeted jinette will back off, and the other will stand still. with this, if only one unit is attacking them, the unit that stands still can be turned to the enemy flank or rear. once they are split up due to the skirmish, you can command both to charge getting the attacking unit trapped between the two jinettes. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
