Hello all Let me introduce myself. WarHawk. Untill I got my new system I mainly gamed SPWAW. The period of medevil Japan has always interested me. So I bought STW:Warlord Edition. The tutorial was great. I did have some problems with my e-machine:
System Details.

Peripherals Standard Multimedia Keyboard, 2-Button Wheel Mouse, Standard Speakers
Operating System Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Dimensions 7.25w x 14.125h x 16d
Anyone with this machine I advise they upgrade thier memory to 512 mb. Also get the latest drivers ( Driver Revision: 6.13.01.3460) from Intel Corp.
http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/
Prior to my upgrade I had the following problem:
The tutorial would load and play , also the set battles. My problem was when I would try to play the campaigns. I would select the campaign, clan and movie would run. The trouble as the task bar for loading the campaign would load it would get to 20% and I would be boot back to the desk top. The above fix cured that problem.
Afterthe upgrade I deleted STW:WE and did a defrag, clean full install and I installed patch STWV112. Campaign runs for how long, thats karma.
New problem has shown itself: tutorial menue and preferences menue vanished. I loaded the patch to my STW:we folder. did I do something wrong. how do I get those menues back? I liked practicing in the main tutorial battle.
I hope that my solution to my first problem helps someone here

Hello WarHawk http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif It was refreshingly nice of you to provide a solution to a problem along with a different problem. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif
As to your second problem that doesn't ring a bell. I searched the tech forum and archives and found no references to such a problem.
I've posted your problem in the Apothecary here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=6125;r=1;&#top).

Welcome. I too am interested in the period in Japan before the Civil War, the Civil War itself, and the Shogun period (into the 1800s). Eiji Yoshikawa wrote several books, a couple of which have been translated into English. One is called Musashi. The second book is Taiko. Both very very good books. I've read each of them several times. I enjoy all of the Kurosawa samurai films (Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Rashomon, The Throne of Blood, The Shadow Warrior, etc.). Have you seen the Samurai trilogy with Toshiro Mifune? It's based on the story of Musashi who lived through the Civil War period. I just bought the movie Chushingura but I haven't viewed it yet. I've watched both parts of The 47 Ronin. Part 1 is on DVD, but part 2 is not. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif I started a website devoted to STW (My STW Webpage (http://gary.appenzeller.net/Shogun.html)). I include a list of good books, movies, and I have a timeline of Japanese history that I gleaned from two books I have at home. Thought I'd make a few recommendations, in case you haven't heard of some of this stuff.
Anyway, welcome to TotalWar.org. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I like to thank youn all for your welcome.
Gregoshi, Thank you for posting that problem. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
It is a shame that gaming companies can no come to a standard acceptable to them all in the matter of graphics and audio. It seems they are in cahoots with the computer companies and there Part distributers to constantly keep the public bying computer systems.
Hindsight2020, my interest stems from the the book Shogun
and I have seen a few of Kurosawa samurai films on cable thats about it. What books I can chech out of the public libray I've read. I use to own Sword of the Samuri for an earliy 8088 IBM which I loved to play. No longer own it. I wish it would be brought back. To be honest my interest just started. If you like fiction which I 've read you might like to read Sensie I :Sword Master and Sensie II :Sword Master by David Charney about the Taira and Minamoto period.
My real passion is American Civil War and the Pacific Theater of World War II. I highly recommend down loading SPWAW from Matrix a free game. Also they have a free game on the Pacific War in the Pacific.

I fixed the problem :What I did was install the patch directly to the folder with the STW:we instead of the STW folder. Installed it correctly. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Those books you mentioned sound interesting. I'll have to look them up. Let me know if you read any of the books I mentioned -- particularly Taiko and Musashi. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Since you're interested in the American Civil War, did you read the Shaara books? If so, have you tried to read the two volume set about the American Revolutionary War? I'd recommend them highly. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Anyway, welcome -- again

When you say the samurai trilogy, do you mean Musashi Miyamoto, duel at Ichijoji Temple, and duel at Ganryu Island. Because I have them on DVD and they are a very good trilogy. Do you know of any more HindSight?

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I've been pretty busy at work, and I started a new project at home that's been keeping me busy until I crawl into bed.
Yes, I am talking about Musashi Miyamoto. Eiji Yoshikawa wrote a very good book based on his story. The story had been put in print by several authors, but Yoshikawa's was (the last I knew) the most popular ever in Japan. It is based on a true story of a samurai who survived the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and became the tutor of the Shogun. I also have the movies on DVD. One of my treasures.
Eiji Yoshikawa also wrote the book Taiko which was about a man named Hideyoshi. Son of a man who could no longer prove his samurai heritage, Hideyoshi rose from an unruly boy with no prospects to become the ruler of a unified Japan. On the way, he became the trusted general of Nobunaga of the Oda. After Nobunaga was assassinated, he competed with Ieyasu of the Tokugawa for the domination of Japan. Hideyoshi did not become Shogun but was called Taiko, because he could not prove he was descended from a samurai family. Hideyoshi died after about 10 years. His son did not have the ability to hold the country together, and Japan descended toward civil war. Ieyasu was the opponent. His forces won at Sekigahara in 1600, and Ieyasu became Shogun.
The two books have been translated into English, and I have read them several times, finding them spell-binding even though they are 900-1100 pages each in hardback.
The films that I've come to like that are related to the period of around 1400 to around 1850 are those that are sometimes called samurai films or samurai period films. Most of them were written and directed by Akira Kurosawa. Here are some titles:
Rashomon (1950) - the story about three people and each of their views of a certain incident they were involved in.
The Seven Samurai (1954) - the classic. Worth getting the Criterion version which has a very good commentary you can listen to while watching the film. Remade as The Magnificent Seven.
Throne of Blood (1957) - an adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
The Hidden Fortress (1958) - George Lucas has said that this film inspired the story he wrote for Star Wars.
Yojimbo (1961) and Sanjuro (1962) - Yojimbo was the inspiration for the Clint Eastwood film A Fistful of Dollars.
Kagemusha (1980) - or The Shadow Warrior. This movie is based on the true story of the leader of one of the clans of Japan who was assassinated by a sniper one night. The clan successfully kept the death a secret by using a look-alike. The ruse worked for quite a while.
Ran (1985) - an adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear.
All are excellent. My favorite would be The Seven Samurai. The costumes, the sword play, the Japanese culture that is evident in the portrayal all make the films priceless (IMHO).
Most of the films feature Toshiro Mifune who was in The Samurai Trilogy. Many have an actor Takashi Shimura who is the main samurai in The Seven Samurai.
A non-Kurosawa film that I can recommend would be The 47 Ronin. It is in two parts. Only the first part is on DVD. Not sure why.
I know there are others, but those are the ones that come to mind.

Sorry about the links. The links you were probably referring to were the ones involving my STW pages. I had moved my website to another server, and I've been finding a few missing pages every now and then. I've uploaded the pages, and most of the links will work. The STW pages are related to the initial STW version that came out. I had planned on updating it with information about Mongol Invasion but never got around to it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Some I recognize others I don't. I use the in the manual I am compiling. If I send you a copy of them could you rename them and get them back to me? I would like to also use the unit and building info in the manual.
The building and unit info great again. Since I am having problems in printing out the techtree pdf in black. color is buku too much money now a days. not in my budget.

Not to offend you, but that's a terrible setup.
Is this a dell computer or something?
A 2.2 GHZ Celeron is a waste of money (You should've gone for a less GHZ, more power CPU.)
Another thing: Your video card is bottlenecking your system extremely. Really, get something like a geforce or a radeon as soon as possible.
Anyway, if you can, you should really consider returning this computer and buying a new one. (Perhaps custom-made is the way for you?)
You would not be having these problems with a *proper* computer.
My system:
1.4 GHZ AMD Processor
Ati Radeon 9000 PRO 128MB
256 DDR RAM
Runs everything perfectly and I can safely assume is about two times faster than your system http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif. I built it myself (but most computer stores will make it for you), and it was very cheap.

eXistenZi,
It maybe aterrible setup, but that is all I could aford.
Sometime in the future I'm gona build my own, when funds are available. That e-machine is up-gradable to a P4 and two gigs mem. Thats in the future. It plays Shogun, so it well do. I have got a lot to learn about PC sytems. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Dude.... you don't even have a graphics card. Of course you're gonna have problems. And pull out that CPU and throw in a P4. Celerons have no cache, that's why they're slow as mud. Get the most Mhz you can with 512K Cache and 400 Mhz bus, and stick it in there. It will be less than $200.

SgtAndrew,
Will I check out back in my back yard. That money tree I planted has not budded yet. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
As to graphics card it is intergrated to the motherboard. System Works If you read my first post you will see that I fixed my graphics problem. This machine is far superior to an Acer I own.
Graphics has nothing to do with the problem with downloading at this site's download archive at 3DO. See posts a 3DO Douwnload Topic.
I will be mainly posting now at the Sword Dojo in the future.
Happy Gaming
