View Full Version : Problem with grafics
Ok here is the problem...
In Map mode the game runs nicely, but when i have like 2000 soldiers at the same time in a battle, my comp. is having problems... i have geforce3 and relativly new computer.
Everything runs nicly but when all the units are moving, it stops for 1 milisecond and then runs 1 second, stops for a milisecond and runs 1 second..... ETC ETC
So what computers are you guys using? and do you have any tips to fix the problem? New drivers or something?

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif It could be the size of your processor etc or the fact a firewall could be running in the backround

Hi Lazul http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif would you like to give as a better idea of your system.
We would quite like to know:
your processor speed
your sound card
anything else you can think of.
Until then you might want to check the MTW support page (http://www.totalwar.com/community/support.htm#medieval) and ensure you have downloaded the latest drivers for your graphics card aswell as the MTW patch to version 1.1 from here (http://download.activision.com/activision/totalwar/downloads/patches/MedievalTW_v1.1_US_Euro.exe).
Hope we can sort your problems out. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

as a start, turn down your sound acceleration and sound sampling. this is a common problem in mtw and a known issue. if you still have problems after that, post more of your specs and we'll have a look-see.

I think that this is the Vcard and the CPU being to slow...given the fact that it starts happening with the number of troops getting larger.

It's also not a bad idea to make sure nothing else is running in the background while playing MTW.
For instance, virus protection software, freeware apps, or anything that runs continuously. Look in your system tray for obscure icons and disable them.

EndItAll is a good program for killing numerous background tasks in one click of the mouse. I'm sure a web search will give you some places to download it (like ZDnet.com).

Hey guys would a G4 vcard be suitable for MTW?

G4 should be plenty (MX or TI ?). If you are buying though, look into Radeons 9500+ as well - they support DirectX9, GF4 does not... a friend of my sold his GF4 4200 TI after two days and went online for the R9500 PRO http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Gregoshi: I assume that your program does a better job then I did, but after cleaning the task manager of all the useless things, my #D Mark 2003 numbers went up only by 10-20 points.....

I agree with Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the only time I have ever had trouble with a game is when summut else is running in the background.
Would add also look at your RAM....it come somewhat cheap....and is easy to install. Most PCs you can add to total 512K and everything runs fine. Check out www.crucial.com , have used them before and they have good prices and fast shipping. My Dell has G4 and no problems.
Good luck,

There are many utility programs out there that will help you stop programs from running in the background, but it's really not necessary. You can accomplish this manually if you want to. In Windows 95/98/ME, simply press Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the End Program dialog box, then End everything. The only thing that needs to run is Systray and Explorer. However, you can kill these also, they'll just respawn.
On WinXP, pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up a window where you can select Task Manager. In Task Manager, under the Applications tab, you can close running programs. You can also see all programs running, but I wouldn't recommend messing with the background apps in XP because there a lot of services that need to run and closing the wrong ones can cause major problems.
The best way to eliminate this problem is to not start the background apps to begin with. If you're running Win98, you can go to Start, Run and run msconfig without the quotes. When it comes up, go to the last tab (Startup) and disable everything you don't need to run. If you are running another operating system, you can check your Startup folder in Start, Programs for programs that are starting when you boot up. If all else fails, you can modify the registry so that nothing starts up. It's under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
There are also some keys in the same place called RunOnce and RunServices.
However, and hear me out on this, if you don't feel REALLY comfortable in the registry, DO NOT do this. You can hose your computer very easily in here.
If you need more details, let me know. I can point you to some good sources.
Good Luck
