Hi,

I am playing Hojo against the Mongols, with the patch, expert.

if there is any documentation about these things, please tell where to find it.

1. Are Warrior Monks out ? I built large castles and Tranquil Gardens in Kii and Kaga, and still can't build a Buddhist Temple.

2. Can the Mongols land anywhere ? or just the north coast, at random provinces ? They landed at Chikuzen, and later one small landing at Izumo.

3. I am at 1279 now, and it seems quite easy. Just hold them off a few battles at Chikugo (river - easy), Bungo and Nagato (mountains), keep them confined to the 3 northern provinces of Kyushu, build and train leisurely. Unless some more armies are on the way...

4. In the river battle, the Ashi Crossbow units killed 120-140 each, while Samurai Archers killed 30-50 each. Their position didn't seem to me very different in advantages. The Ashi's were a little closer since they can't fire over other units heads.

5. Is there a key to pillaged koku - Mongol reinforceents, or is there a random factor there ?

Thanks !

1. Are Warrior Monks out ?
yes, some buildings are not buildable during the mongol era.
If you want to see the effects of monks, guns etc against the mongols try my campaigns at www.totalwar.org. (http://www.totalwar.org.)
One of them is a 'special' edition, with some interesting possibilities...

2. Can the Mongols land anywhere ?
No, just semi-random North Coast Provinces, they can land as far east as the province of Noto.

3. I am at 1279 now, and it seems quite easy. Just hold them off a few battles at Chikugo (river - easy), Bungo and Nagato (mountains), keep them confined to the 3 northern provinces of Kyushu, build and train leisurely. Unless some more armies are on the way...
To get reinforced the Mongol needs to capture provinces for pillage, without them his reinforcements dry up.
For a harder version on normal settings again try my campaigns.

4. In the river battle, the Ashi Crossbow units killed 120-140 each, while Samurai Archers killed 30-50 each.
If you can keep your crossbowmen from routing they are very effective, especially useful for bridge defence!

5. Is there a key to pillaged koku - Mongol reinforceents, or is there a random factor there ?
The more buildings in a province the more koku the mongol will pillage, the more advanced the buidings, again the greater the mongol pillage!
There appears to be a slight random factor, but it would take more time than i have available to 'test' all buildings and figure out the pillage value for each.

My campaigns were developed specifically to be tough on normal, becaue so many people found defending against the mongol quite easy.
My campaigns are designed to be played as Japapnese. They change none of your existing files, everything the campaigns need is in the respective folders.

Do give them a 'test drive' and let me know what you think...

Thanks Barocca http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

While I was busy complaining it's too easy, an army landed in Iwami, real tough, lots of Mongol Heavy Cavalry. I lost big... They didn't pillage anything since the first year of the invasion.

The AI seems much improved, they do wide flankings now and use their speed well.

The Korean foot soldiers seem all the same to me so far, not very effective.

Did anyone do some simulations to find a more accurate account of the rock-paper-scissors system with the mongol units ? especially, how does their cavalry do against Yari units, and Japanese YC, HC, NC ?

I'd read some of the earlier posts about this, but MHC are 'utterly deadly' - they run over Japanese units with ease, YS can stop them but it costs - NC also hurt them but you need armour and honour to do real good with them

best way is, as is always said...just play, the best way to learn...
