well, I don't think that they can be admired because of theirs empire area. I mean, the arabs, mongols and many others created empires far more large then theirs, in a shorter period of time. Their culture and menthality are the ones standing for remark.

If god d ask me how I want to come back to earth again I d prefer to be a powerful roman civil servant, who lives in Rome, with a white palace, a large green garden, and slaves from every part of the empire, who celebrates orgies every day, who marries every weekend a new 15 year old girl from galia or egypt or minor asia, till I die with 101 years in age, a fat body and leave 400 children, who are serving in the roman legion for the sake of their father. Ah yes...and I d write books about JUSTICE. And because god was soo good to me, I d build a large temple for him...no, for me and him. And I ve forgot all the artists from all edges of the empire who are producing so beautiful art for me. And I d call it all "Roman Culture". This d be such a wonderful life. And if dumb and lazy peasants start a revolte I d sent my private Legion to punish them all. To make it more interesting, I d give the order to bring the prisoners to my large garden, where I have a animal park with lions and crocodiles. That d be a great show, since we have no Discovery Channel, to watch how wild animals attack feared crying barbars. The women d drink much wine to forget all the horror they ve seen and drunk girls are mmmmmmh...yes. The wine comes from the beautiful and large fields, I own. This fields are gifts I ve become as salary for my hard work as a humbly civil servant. And if life becomes boring I d go to the Senate to start a debate, like we do here in the forum. Debate about politics, culture, justice, crime, military...to meet all the clever members of the Senate, who loves to debate, that d be much fun. Yes. What a wonderful life.

I admire the Roman Empire.

Rome may not have been the largest Empire ever in territory, but without a doubt it was the greatest of the Empires. No other Empire had so long a life-span, managed to hold so much territory for so long, had so large an impact on world history, or enjoyed as much of a military superiority over its neighbors than the Romans did. The Roman Empire was the world's first true superpower. They also had a remarkable civilization, and Rome's engineers were legendary. There are places around the Mediterranean which still use Roman roads, bridges and plumbing 2000 years later. Amazing...

Personally I'd rather live in an age that has flush toilets and anti-biotics, but hey - each to their own http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Definately. On that note, Elite have you ever heard of the ancient Roman version of toilet paper? If you had to use the public latrine, a sponge on a stick was used to wipe your backside, and when you were finished you rinsed it out with water and put it back for the next guy to use. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

In the meantime, do it as the Byz in M:TW... it's quite satisfying, actually. And as a slight restriction, make sure you NEVER attack any province that falls outside the boudaries in your map there. That meas Khazar is out of bounds, so the Horde have at least one 'easy' area to arrive in; and Syria/Arabia will undoubtedly be the last 'outpost' of either the Egyptians or the Turks (or maybe a Crusader outpost), and likely a constant thorn in your side.

Believe me, defending such a long frontier is a nightmare, especially as the northern european remnant kingdoms all gang up on you...

I try to do that but find I have to take Arabia. Its just too annoying to defend but otherwise I try not to go north of Bulgaria or Georgia or into Germany too much.

That's the whole point, mate. It's meant to be challenging and annoying... to counter the fact that your Empire will generate so much money. It also better similates that you will have enemies on all sides, not just a safe 'map edge'. You need to spread your resources over a much wider front, instead of just massing your forces in a bottleneck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Do, or do not, there is no try... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I guess I just don't have the patience for that but I solemnly promise that as soon as I'm finished with the Viking Campaign after the weekend, I will not take Arabia. Are incessant raids allowed? please?

Elwe

Nope. No military actions over the 'border' allowed. It would be too tempting for you to demolish any structures there, and the AI needs all the help it can get http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

LOL, but hey, that was the life standard in the public toilets...for ordinary people...still billions of people in the modern world have even not that toilet standard
