To get metw to install I had to first clear computer of all the left overs from a previous install. I then defragmented hard disk. Then cleared tempoary files. Next I shut down and re-booted. I then temporerely disabled firewall and anti-virus, metw then installed with no problems.

Hi Biggus Dickus firstly welcome to the .org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I have posted your problem here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=6572;r=1;&#top) for you. Please can you ensure you include in this thread as much information as possible about you system so we can do our best to help.

My personal initial reaction is to check the cd for any dirt or damage just to ensure this is not causing the problem. Hope we can sort you out, I too first played MTW on my old and somewhat slow PC it was really a good day when I played it the way that was intended http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

2.53 Ghz P4 and GF4 Ti 4600??? In that case, I recommend the following:

1. Disconnect all cords from your computer.

2. Put your computer in a cardboard box, along with some of those styrofoam peanuts.

3. Take it to the post office and send it to:

5711 ....

Just kidding. I dunno. Someone on the ezboard forum said the same thing. Sounds pretty weird, like the CD is damaged or something. Other games have done the same thing to me, and probably because the CD was irrepairably scratched.

nope no soap getting an error message from 'arab3 wav file'
and there aint a scratch on the cd nowheres sounds like a busted cd http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif gonna go back to EB and see if I can con the salesman into exchanging it ( I bought this game when it came out some months back) I played around with it for about an hour I'm gonna be pissed if he won't help me out
I have noticed that there others (the total war site) that have been getting nailed at the 50% install mark really at a loss it sure does'nt seem to be a hardware issue.

Hi Biggus take a look in the MTW manual (I don't have mine on me sorry) and have a look if they run a returns policy on defective disks. Most companies will do this and make a minimal charge for it. Also if you know anyone else with the game so far as I'm aware given that you have bought the rights to the software you are legitimatly allowed a backup.

Anyway my advice is not to give up http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

I had trouble with my install as well. It crashed like this about half a dozen times at different points each time. I tried different vid drivers, running lower FSB, higher voltages, reduced memory timing, etc. None of it worked. This is the only piece of software that would not install on the machine. Even though I was using a 400 W Antec PSU (older SmartPower not newer TruPower), I suspected I had a voltage issue that was causing the 3.3 V rail to fall too low on my 8500 when all those drives were running hard, music was playing, and vid was running during the install (never had been a problem before.) My solution? I also run an old 3dfx Banshee in the case in an alternate profile (with Banshee disabled while running 8500 and 8500 disabled while running Banshee.) I changed settings, switched to the very low power draw Banshee and installed without difficulty. After that it was fine on the 8500. So if you have an old PCI card about, you might experiment with it.

FWIW, I suspect some of the Safedisk anti-piracy crap might also be coming into play. Any technology that intentionally corrupts portions of the CD wins a stupidity award in my book.

I recently rebuilt the OS and the install went OK this time using the 8500. I'm now using a PC Power and Cooling 425 W PSU and it is heaven--voltages stay spot on throughout all torture tests. It could have been this new PSU that made the difference.

Biggus, the Vikings start out with enough ships to reach England. There is a stack of 4 ships off the coast of H????land and another stack of 4 off the coast of Jutland. Break each stack into 4 separate fleets and create a chain of ships to the English coastline. Once you do that, you can pick up your armies and drop them on any English coastal province next to your ships. And you can do all this on the first turn since Viking ships can move 3 sea areas in one turn. I hope that helps.

my question is what size will for example will one ship move as opposed as to say two or three?

Left-click the ship; down below, center-screen should appear how ever many ships there are represented by that one floating on the sea. Left-click & hold 1 or more of those (one at a time), drag & drop where you want them.

Just like moving a 60-man unit out of a 1,000-man army.
