View Full Version : The King of the Mercians

Ok, we've had or are having, the Kings of Poland and England. Now its time for a VI version. I got the game this morning and started playing a few turns as the Mercians. Very impressed with the game so far with all the improvements and smaller map.
Anyways, who wants to be in on the Mercian Dynasty? It seems everyone else has gone for the Vikings or Scots as the cooler factions, so this is your chance to play someone different, before we've figured out how everything works to the nth degree http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Post your email here - same rules as other threads, VI (obviously) winzip. Hopefully this game shouldn't take as long due to the smaller map etc.
Any kind person like to sort out posting screenies for us?

With the new save between battles option, we could make this very fun and involved with a bit of planning. It would take a while, but players could be the generals and could do the battling during each turn while the King shifts/assassinates them based on their performance. The option for real life intrigue in this sort of co-op game would be great.
I think that this idea in VI has massive potential with the new options and should be brainstormed about. Of course, this King thread could follow traditional rules, like England and Poland.

Yeah, that is a great idea...but for someone elses dynasty That will be a lot of organising and will require a lot of commitment from the generals involved.
BTW, are you in or not Kongomato?

Mount Suribachi: Check out the tavern. There is a thread with your name on it (literally).

OK, thanks guys - I'll wait till I've got confirmation that you've got the game before I put you on the official list. Need your email addresses too.
Still need someone to host the screenies.
King Offa I died last night after a 17 year reign, so the throne is up for grabs right now...I'll start a separate thread for the account of his reign.

I still have some webspace remaining for screenies. Email them to me with the subject: VI Screenshots, so I can distinguish those from spam, which I delete un-read.
jim@jimcee.com
Some suggestions on screenies: 1) cut the mini-map out of the whole map image; the mini's provide enough detail. 2) at the end of your reign, use the .matteosartori. cheat to illuminate the entire map (and mini); the illuminated map will give the reader a better grasp of your strategy.
BTW, I'm in for this project, but won't have VI until next week - so put me at the bottom of the list. Thanks.

OK, thanks KK. If I mail you the screenies could you please add them to the Mercian Dynasty thread I started? I've already done my screenies, cut down to size, but I don't know what the mateosartori cheat is so...
So far the list reads
DDogwood
Alrowan
KukriKahn jim@jimcee.com
But none of you have the game yet...anyone with the game want in so I can pass this thing on?

Mount Suribachi, I see you received the images & plugged them into your other thread already. Good job, & nice write-up.
For future reference, you enable that 'cheat' by typing (blindly - there is no field to enter it) .matteosartori. with periods at both the beginning and end. As a result, you'll hear the parchment-opening sound, and all the other factions/lands will be visible to you on both the campaign and mini maps.

Sanctaphrax, is that email address correct? I sent you the save game but I got an error saying there was no such address, so I sent a test message and that got sent back with the same error message.
This dynasty thing isn't going very well http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

I've got it, and it works. Here's a quick update from the front:-
A pox on the Saxons Those treacherous curs have renounced their alliance and invaded East and Suth-Seaxe Prince Offa put up a valiant defence in East-Seaxe, but he was overwhelmed by the Saxon King's Bodyguard and elite Housecarles. He was forced to retreat to the castle, as was the garrison in Suth-Seaxe.
Our Blackguard allies, The Northumbrians The Scots, and The Irish, have decided to side with our enemy. Their lack of faith is terrible to behold. However, The Welsh have remained by our side. They have earnt our gratitude.
This state of affairs will not last for long. The king races to rescue his son as we speak, aided by Nordish brigands. On the subject of the Norse, they have been quiet. I pray this will continue, as the Huscarles and Beserkers strike fear into even my proud, Mercian heart. Our navy is, fortunately, closer to matching theirs, as our slipway project has been completed. Soon we will be able to confront the Norse with their own ships, albeit not as well crafted.

(Edit: I copied this into the other thread. What's the screenshot key, by the way?

Screenshots = F2. Then find them in the TW folder called 'TGA's'.

thnks for the quick update Big King, puts my mind at rest about emailing the savegame. Great job on the write up so far too.
the list of future heirs still stands at
Big King Sanctaphrax (currently playing)
DDogwood
Alrowan
KukriKahn
But the last 3 still don't have VI as far as I am aware. I also need the emails of DDogwood and Alrowan.
BTW Big King, of the allies that deserted you, only the Welsh remained - but they're the only faction I married into, it would appear that maybe marriage alliances are stronger?

Ok, major problem. The King has died without any heirs. I'm really sorry about this. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif The way I see it, you should probably give the game before I recieved it to somebody more competent. Those bloody Huscarles

Ah well, that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes...I carried on playing the save game that I sent you and had exactly the same thing happen - a surprise attack by the Saxons. At first they drove me out of several provinces - their housecarls were just unbeatable But mainly through the use of *lots* of mercenaries, who at times were little more than housecarl cannon fodder, I was able to drive them back. After 9 years of constant fighting I finally killed the Saxon king, leaving just 1 saxon province untaken, which is now a rebel province. I gotta say, I really enjoyed the tough challenge, getting my butt whipped several times by the AI, some heroic defeats, some not so heroic, and some hard fought victories too.
Don't feel too bad about it Big King, I've realised that the kingdom wasn't quite as secure as I thought Mainly cos I hadn't got to building armoured spearmen, let alone housecarls. Still, when you play a game for the 1st time, you'll find out lotsa new things
Anyways, can you write up the end of your reign and post it in the dynasty thread. Cheers mate http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Does the king dying without an heir mean the game is over? Was there a civil war to determine who the new king is?

Sorry Sprucemoose, this babys over. The Mercians are no more. Tho if you want to read more, head over to the main hall and the re-emerging factions thread to find out how King Aethelbert I did under my control.
Keep your eyes peeled tho, I'm sure there'll be more of these games kicking around.
