Playing as Saxony in S England......peace with Wales and Saxony.....building to prep for the Vikings. On the same turn the Mercians bribed a general to open the gates and they took my N province AND the Vikings landed a `mass`. As I repel the V raid and seige my province the Mercians come south en masse and Vikings land en masse. Squeezed in a vice I didnt last long.
Loved it that the AI could do that.
Also noticed that battles in SP seems smoother than MTW.

Playing my first campaign as the Vikings , I was poised to take my 2nd province and when I attacked the 2 units of celtic warriors (picts) did a good job of hiding themselves in the forest and as the attacker made me go up the face of a steep hill to get at them, I was impressed I still kicked there butts http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

This is quite an intersting tale.

I so far have only played as Mercia and Vikings, and in most occasions have been allies with the other..

Has anybody else noticed how often Vikings and Mercia form an alliance ?

On second thoughts, it might be the fact that I am an aggresive player in the first half a dozen moves as Mercia, and usually either invade Wales or the Rebel lands to my east, So by the time the Vikings appear I have already had a few victories.....and increased the size of my empire....

Haven't noticed that in my campaign. Mercia is superpower there and has no allies at all. Vikings did some minor raids, against Mercia only, they are allied with all the others. Now Mercia has too many troops, so the raids are unsuccessful.
Time to act for me, I'm starting to max out my army and declare war on them. (Playing as Saxons..)
I noticed increased enemy assassin activity though...

I`m Saxon and I`m allied with Mercia. They are constantly at war with the Vikings. Would love to fall in their back but they are to strong. So I decided to take out the Welsh first, despite the fact that we were allies and changed princesses for a hundred years. Hmm, getting wifes for your princes seems more easy to me now.

Saxony is an area in what is now Germany (There was migration to Britain from here c.400-600, hence the 'saxon' name)

The 'Saxon' faction inhabit Wessex - the territory of the West Saxons. This is the faction that Alfred the great came from and successfully beat back the Viking attack...

Nice potted history Shade,

By the way, if anyone's into the subject get hold of a copy of James Campbell (ed.), The Anglo-Saxons (1981) - fantastic introduction to Saxon history, 'real' academic study, but written beautifully and not at all dry.

(I've got an exam on Anglo-Saxon England on Thursday, does playing Viking Invasion count as revision? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif )

cheers

Im currently reading

D.J.V Fischer's - The Anglo-Saxon Age c400-1042 and
Michael woods in search of the dark ages.

I also have on order from amazon a book on the history of Mercia. But I cant remember what that one is called. Very interesting part of English history.

I was playing as the Mercians and had taken out most of the rebel lands in the east and was about finished off with the Welsh when the Saxons attacked me. So then I am way over-committed and the darn Irish attack from one side and the Vikings from the other coast and my magnificent empire is in shambles. Mighty nice improvements.
