REPUBLICAN ARMY
At the start of the Rebuplic, the army was organized very simply, and the soldiers were divided into groups called centuries, which had 100 men in them. Later as the army grew soldiers were grouped into much larger units called legions, of about 4,200 men. Each Legion was divided into groups known as maniples containing 120men.
THE IMPERIAL ARMY
-Legion=6,000 men
-First Cohert=800 men
-Ordinary Cohorts=400 men
-Century=80 men
-Contubernium=8 men
THE PEOPLE IN A LEGION
Legionary-A foot soldier. For most of Roman History only citizens could be legionarys.
Auxillary-A non-citizen who fought in the army. Each Legion had its own group of them.
Cavalry Soldier-A soldier who fought on horseback
Cornicene-A horn blower who sent signals during battles.
Aquilifer-The standard bearer who carried the legions precious golden eagle during the battle.
Signifier-A standard bearer who carried the emblem of a century.

Primus Pilus-The Seniour centurion in a legion.
Praefectus Castroorum-A senior officer in charge of the training and organization of a legion.
Tribune-An officer who helped the legatus to run the Legion.
