I read some good things about Europa Universalis (1 & 2).
Haven't tried it myself.

Europa Universalis (1 & 2) are both good games.
Not much like MTW, its more of a strat game than a hands on battle type game.
er cossacks, amerian conquest, praetorians.

There is nothing like MTW... (well apart from Shogun of course) but you could also give Empire Earth a try.

Honestly the closest game I can think of is Master of Orion 2, at least as far as gameplay goes. It's SF instead of historical, but it is a turn-based strategy game where you develop buildings and technologies on various planets that you and the AI can colonize and attack. Battles are tactical and turn-based, and are fought with ships that you design and build.
The strategic part of the game in MOO2 might be slightly better than MTW but the tactical battles in MTW are far superior.

Yeah,EE was cool,but I can't wait for Empires:Dawn of the modern world(it's sequel).
Rise of Nations (not out yet) has some similar stuff.

Yeah, MTW started a trend. Lots of copycat games now, Rise of Nations looks like the only good one.
Has nothing to do with MTW, but if you want a VERY cool strategy game try Sacrifice. It is cool, looks gorgeous, and it is FUNNY

Oh God Not EE fans... I thought their tastes were more directed at the lower end of the market.

Despite the remark's perhaps a little inflammatory nature, I can't help but agree. Admittedly, I've only played the demo of Empire Earth, but that experience struck as so totaly mindless that I can't think of a strategy/tactical game that is more opposite to MTW.

And why would EE be that bad...? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
Anyway,Activision's stand would be cool to watch at E3 as they'll have (among other games) both RTW and Empire:Dawn of the modern Wodrld.

Well, of course it's not as good as the Total War series. But you can have some pretty good fun with EE Don't just judge it by a demo. It's very customizable (is that a real word??? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif ) But it looks a bit dated by now, plus side is you can probably pick it up for some nice budget price http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You might like Age of Empires II: Age of Kings or 1503 A.D-The New World, Stronghold: Crusades, or as already been suggested, Praetorians.
If you like the strat part of MTW then EU1 2 goes into it in much more depth. Downside is battle is autoresolved else it would eclipse even the TW series.

They're a bit dated now, but the Sid Meiers Gettysburg and Antietam games featured real-time battlefield strategy similar to MTW, but not the strategic map. They're nice games; look for the bundle with both of them that probably costs less than $20 if it's still for sale anywhere.
