Help

I crash to desktop after 1 out of 2 battles, both on a Nvidia TTi200 and a mobile AGP Radeon 9000.

Any ideas ?

I had a great victory, and won , 497 to 128, and after the battle, and the battle results, got the dreaded Carsh to desktop , with no error message.

Can someone help me ?

Also, in this game, I had a couple of battles where my units were invisible:, i.e. they were there, just every unit (mine & the enemy) were not on the battlefield

I could hear them move, and fight, just not see them

But, first things first. Why am I cardhing to the desktop.

Configuration:

Fast PC, both the PC & Laptop
Latest Nvidia & ATI drivers
512MB of RAM on each
P4's Both
Running XP with all patches execpt SP1.

Anyone help ?

Pretty please ?
Jean

Why haven't you applied sp1?

Also I believe there is a compatability update for xp, make sure you have that.

As a last resort you could try right clicking on the shortcut for Total War and go to the compatability tab and run the program in a different mode.

And while you're off doing all that, remember that someone said:

Check the Apothecary for the thread DirectX 9.0 for VI absolutely neccesary ? I have a vid card that does not support DX9.0 and I have not installed it for my copy of VI and it runs fine, during the install it tells you it is needed to run the game but if you read the manula it clearly states it will run with 8.1 or higher the install thing is just a way for activision to cover themselves if problems arise (read the posts in the above mentioned thread) others are also running on 8.1 with no problems. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Seems it is a game feature.

Make sure there are no 0 strength units in production cues. To keep this from happening, it seems to help if you turn the auto-clean up after battle option off.

Other than my 2bits there are quite a few suggestions in the Apothecary. Even if you manage to get it stable it is a good idea to hit control-S from time to time. Having that auto-save handy allows you to lose as little progress as possible.

Take heart The game is good when you getting running properly. Enjoy

Thanks

Does Control-S work in the Battle screen ?

Or only on the campaign map... It's those 1 hour + battles that get me annoyed when there is a CTD..

What are the major things to do to get it stable, off the top of your head ?

Thx

ok, i'm only directing this to the original post here. crashes to desktop in xp can be caused by several things, but because you're also getting 'invisible' units at times, this is almost certainly a vid card driver issue. what we've found in almost every TW release is that sometimes the latest and greatest drivers arent the solution. sometimes you have to revert back to earlier drivers.

that you are only crashing in 1 out of 2 games might indicate that it's not drivers, but xp. some of the retail machines with xp are just loaded with extra junk running in the background. xp not only shows you 'tasks' that are running, but also 'services'. a lot of this stuff is just junk and can be removed, disabled, or set to start only manually, and not automatically. when i did this with my xp machine i cleared up a number of crash problems. the more i turned off, the less frequent the crashes. it was quite obvious. there is also a post or two about this in the apothecary and i think i've pinned that one too, so, it'll be one of the top 10 or 12 threads in there.

as for the laptop, well, one thing at a time. come post your stuff in the apothecary when you can and we'll see what we can do.

damn, i need some of that ibm server pixie dust.

The quick save does not work during battles http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif Would be nice for 4hour marathons http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I thought I had the game running very stable...played 8 hours in one sitting ( hey the game was new then http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif ). Lost it all on a CTD. Even when you KNOW you have all the problems covered...save yourself some grief and quick save from time to time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The assumption here seems to be that Gauthijm is having problems with Viking Invasion. I've not seen a reference to which game is causing problems. Some of the advice is nice and generic but not the DirectX discussion.

Having said that, Gauthijm which game are you having troubles with?

Sorry...

I was getting sidetracked by the nice info I got here...

1- My PC, with the Nvidia Ti4200 8X MSI 128MB, witha new P4 2.4, was the one having the invisible units and the CTD 1 out of 2 times.. I am using the latest Nvidia XP drivers as well. I stayed with DX 8.1 as well, as DX9 support is not there ( I think) for the geForce 4 cards)

I removed AA X2 that I was using, unistalled the game, and reinstalled MTW, and the Vikings expansion...

I have started an Italian Campaign on Version 2.0 (Vikings) and will see if I still have the problems I mentionned CTD & Inisible units.. thx to everyone.

If you have any advice yet, let me know and i'll try (such as the Graphics memory option in Vikings, which gives me 118 MEG as what it is readin in the Vikings control panel)

2- How can I get promoted to go to the apothecary ? Is there a waiting period or a certain amount of posts before proving you aren't / are not / are a n00b
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

3- as for my laptop, running 1.1 is fine as of yet, with an occasional CTD after a tactical battle. That one has the RADEON 9000 64MB on a 1,8 P4.. I have 512MB of RAM

Not really a problem, but if anyone has any info on preventing these forever, that would be nice.

Thx to all, and especially to the last poster who brought this back on post

Thx
jean

you talking about the agp slider in the options? set this to no larger than half your video memory. since you've got 128, set yours at 64. this prolly wont help much with the crash problem, but shld improve your game play quite a bit, which in turn may resolve some of the crash problems too.

There is not post count or waiting period. Promotion is simply based on when we determine that you are a fine, upstanding individual. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif And when we mods have the time to get around to it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Yes, that was the slider I meant...

I will set it to 64 then (half of my 128MB), but why then does the system default to 118 (out of 128 MB)... Is that an aggressive setting ?

Can the moderator help here ?

Thx a million
