View Full Version : Creative Assembly Vikings not doing anything?
http://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~jeminich/viking.jpg
I'm Ireland. I've been playing for maybe 50 turns and the vikings haven't done anything during that time. They haven't taken any provinces. There has only been one AI vs AI war, Mercia vs Saxons.
Is it possible that if their first few raids fail they run out of money and do nothing, kind of like the Danes in the original MTW game?
Should I restart?
Expert difficulty btw.
well im playing mericans and havent seen the vikings they attacked the rebels twice that was it with tiny armies which i swept away iv been playing for 50 years too and thats itand iv taken the bottom half of britian

i was playing as northumbria and had most of England then after about 100 years the shit hit the fan and vikings were landing all over coastal regions as well as the saxons counter attacking . so now i have a small foot hold in scotland. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif oh and a word of warning 2 groups of 60 viking huscarls took out over 600 fyrdmen and supporting archers http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

The AI Vikings do not raid often, but when it does it is usually invincible. Try stopping a group of 12 berserkers. I've never seen men disappear so quickly.

I think the reason why the vikings don't do much raiding early on is becuase of lack of money & the AI's inability to make the ships link for a successful raid. But if u play for a long time u should see some as the vikings will have stacks of viking huscarls(ex heirs).
btw i have a 14 valour Joms viking unit its stats r 21att, 21def & 38morale http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

well all i gotta say is jomskins http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
worse than beserkers by a mile.
60 took out over 1500 spearmen with a loss of 13 in their first battle.
im sorta glad those guys dont attack me.
oh and do the picts have an unlimmeted supply of cash?
as the vikings i constantly attacked the picts so that the scotts would get up and pick on their mutch weaker neighbour.
when i left a province they would rebel with 2-3 units.
but i forgot to move a peice one time and a 3000 man army rebelled, i left the province and headed southwards.
finaly feeling the need for cash i whent up north. the picts hadent moved they still had massive armies an 0 buildings.
so it would seem as if i made them go into the red.
but whilst trying to finish them off i captured their king 4 times witch in total gave me 50,000 florins over 10 years.
so if they had the cash to spare why werent they building anything?

They were probably in the red from paying off the ransom (if you don't have enough money, you still pay it off, but just go in the red) and the huge support costs.

U can pay ransoms on the never never(same as medieval) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
In my last game as teh saxons the vikings where everywhere they raided all of teh southern rebels lands & then went for the rebel lands around the irish sea. They still haven't held onto one province, kinda like the horde in mtw

I only play on "expert" but here is what I've seen so far (4 games).
It doesn't make sense for Vikings to hold most provinces. They get 2000 florins for hitting a province with an abbey. After they raid such a province there is no income left so it is best to abandon it. The religion is different so they are going to have trouble holding it anyway (and siege support costs are quite high for them.) Their unit support costs are quite high so they need to use abbey raids just to keep out of the red. They should only occupy provinces with some decent farms or other income source.
In my games as Scots and Picts the Vikings were all over me any time I left a province with an abbey less than well guarded. The Picts have a particularly tough go of it. You can beat the Viking armies (even very early) though, through effective use of archers/crossbows, use of cover (vs. spears and for concealment), and flanking maneuvers to ruin their morale while their smaller armies are fully engaged. Certain highland provinces are ideal for shredding tough Viking units. I built some ships as the Scots and shut the Viking raids down.
One thing I noticed, my generals seem more likely to die in combat now than before, especially heirs.

Hmm... I noticed exactly the opposite... Playing Vikings, none of my princes fell in a combat even though they were front line soldiers all through the campaign. Well, once I lost a prince when out of sheer foolishness I sent him to break down a castle gate: the royal got cooked... ;( But not a biggie: he had a bunch of brothers and cousins to take his spot http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It could be that the Vikings have lost a couple of fleets due to storms, and/or raided in places you can't "see" on the map. Just be grateful that they haven't come knocking on your door http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I made the mistake of assuming they were trapped in their own territory when I hadn't seen them in roughly 40 turns. Wrong. They stomped through my territory only stopping to relieve my armies of the burden of life when I chose fight over flight. It seems that when playing a faction located at either the top or bottom of the map you tend not to see the vikings wreaking havoc upon those on the other end of the island. Rest assured that they have heard of your piddily little kingdom and will drop in for a spot of tea some rainy afternoon. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
What is wrong with being irredeemably naughty? It should be actually somewhat desirable in those of the female persuasion.
