Hi, would anyone know why my game keeps crashing to the desktop after I press escape to save? I was in the middle of a Welsh game, and I can't save the game because it crashes when it starts to load the menu screen. A few days ago it was also occurring during battles, and it gets extremely annoying. This only started happening after V.I., so I am assuming there is some kind of bug.

Ok, here is my system.
AMD 2000+
Geforce 2 MX100/200
ASUS A7N8X(in preparation for a new graphics card)
512 MB DDR PC2100 RAM

Every update and driver possible is updated. SP1, DX9.0 etc.
The only thing I don't have is the official NVIDIA driver for the graphics card, because last time it ruined my computer.

I might be wrong here but I have a GeForce 4 MX 440 vid card and mine does not support DX 9.0 and you have an older or slower version GeForce than me so that might be an issue. check out the stats on your card I am guessing it does not support DX9.0 and that could be the problem http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif PS. VI runs just fine with DX 8.1

Am I able to delete DX 9.0 and install 8.1?

I went on their site, and it says that the version I have(9.0a) is compatible with everything.

well, we got kind of sloppy early on about saying that earlier vid cards were not dx9 compatible. dx9 shld be compatible with the gf2. what shld have been said was that earlier cards wont be able to make use of the new features in dx9. it shld still mostly be backwards compatible with most current cards being used.

did you install dx9 when you installed vikings? if so, then i'm guessing your drivers either need to be re-installed or you need new ones. this could be sight or sound or both. i believe there's even a note in the readme file that came with vikings about this.

you have to understand that directx is the sight and sound interface to windows. it's actually woven into windows and you might as well say it's part of the o/s. your other drivers have to communicate with it. when you change directx you are then actually changing the o/s and your prior drivers to devices may not now work right. this is also one of the reasons microsoft doesnt allow you to remove directx, well, not easily anyway. it's essentially like a service pack in this regard, in that it's now part of your o/s. and we all know that when you upgrade your o/s you also often have to upgrade other drivers to now match.

about the only way to get rid of a directx version is to re-install the o/s and then your older dx version. there was a rumor going around that someone had developed a program for removing or replacing a later dx with an earlier one, essentially rolling it back, but i never saw it.

you might also be able to roll it back with a restore point, but i've never tried it, so that's at your own risk.

K.

Yes, that is exactly what I said, backwards compatible. Well anyway, I uninstalled both games and reinstalled them, now they seem to be working fine. Thanks, guys, I guess I will just have to do this until a patch comes out.

What does this mean, I think it is the error log for my crashes. Any computer geniuses know?

I got MTW & VI to work with my GeForce 4 MX 440 by loading the 4.13 drivers & DX 9a
