hi all

what is Viking Raiding? i am not clear on it.....

is it just going to other providence with your viking troops and attacking there providence and taking that providence over?

how is that different than a regular faction attacking another providence and taking it over?

just not clear on this....thanks

I am not sure, as I haven't got VI yet, but I think it has to do with the fact that vikings can transport their troops out of a provine even if it has no port.
You just attack and then move out the next year.

From what I understand now its just the same as attacking a province. You attack and get the usual florins pillaged, then just leave. Don't stay to conquer the province, just gather cash that way. The Vikings are supposed to get more from pillaging I think.

If vikings destroy a building on the battlefield, they get it's full values in florins (if they just click destroy on the strategic map they still only get half its value like everyone else). This means they can 'raid' a province by marching in and destroying all the buildings for a healthy profit, then leaving again (preferably to another enemy province http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ).

They can also use ships for transport from provinces with now ports, to allow them to starting raiding early in the game, and get back home from enemy provinces without having to wait 4 yrs to build a port

Initially it is to get money to create an army, with which to conqueor (sp?) the Isles. From what I have read the Vikings starting provinces are not that rich.

It is probably also implemented to give some historic realism. In real life the vikings first raided, then later they settled and conquerored England.

jbmagic,

yes, the game is conquest and hold onto it. however, with the raiding capability being so profitable, you can hit and run and build up your reserve cash while building up a better army. it can be very profitable to attack say the northern island of the orcades that only has 100 men on it, but in the province next door is sitting an enemy army of 1000. it's pointless to try and hold the orcades as they only get about 32 florins as income to start. so you hit it, gain 5000 florins, or whatever it happens to be and leave without suffering the counterattack from that 1000 man army.

it's a great opening tactic for the vikings. sometimes you do want to hold onto the province just raided. that's your choice, but sometimes it's just not worth it right away. bear in mind too, that the vikings are pretty poor to start off with and it takes time to build up farms and trade, so without that raiding, you just cant make it.

Because the objective is not to take territory here, but to get cash. Say I invade a province which has an income of 48 florins, but 3000 florins worth of buildings. I can take the province and garrison it with some men, which will probably lose me money, as their upkeep will probably be more than 48 Florins. Or, I can destroy the buildins, pocket a cool 3K, sail home to Nordaland with the lads for some mead, wait for the province to get built back up and raid again. I choose the latter.

thanks all..

so to raid i just go attack the providence, get the florin pillage and get out to make money..

some people are saying destroy buildings in the providence...when i raid and attack the providence. but there no bulding left, when i get the florin pillage, unless enemy goes in fort, that the only building i see left.

now when enemy goes in fort is it good to stay and seige it...or just get out of providence and go raid another providence...

also do i worry about conquering those providence later, when i make my money on raiding and get a large army?

thanks
