I will update this thread as I find out more about them....
Well, here goes:
1-They have 3x provinces, of which two have iron deposits; that will really help later... That's Hungary and Carpathia, and they have GOOD resources as well in mineral deposits.
Trade would be weak, but with serbia & Croatia in your pocket, s port there would start you out on your way to a trade empire... Also, a Quick war with the Italians would really, really jump start this as you could grab maybe venice / Tuscany and end up with more trade and shipbuilding prowess.
2- they have some rebel provinces around them that are easy to pick up, especially Serbia, a Gold province... So in very short order, they have 4x Provinces...
3- They start with a nice army, at least 1 Knight and 4-5 Horse Archers, as well as some other odds and ends..
Your King, Lazslo is not that bad either (4 stars ?)
4- They are a Powerful faction at start, even with only 1 (level 1) fortress at start, as they are an EARLY Developper with their units mix. Some of their units (I could be wrong here) are available with only a level 1 structure, making for very quick development.
a) Horse Archers close to the start
b) Javelinmen at the start
c) Finally, the biggee, Cavalry of Good quality at the START...
Wow.. what an advantage against a faction like the Italians... Nothing compared to the Byzantines, much not bad at all for a small faction.
I will be starting a thread of my Vikings Game (my 1st) start as the Hungarians, and post an AAR (After Action Report) on how powerful they are at the start....
I wonder if they are that powerful mid to late game (probably not) compared to the Germans/French/English , but for a while there you can quickly take out another factions core provinces, and have 50% to 100% boost to your starting resources and/or provinces.
In my game, I have played only 2 hours last night, but I have started very nicely in the 1st 10 years...
I Honestly think you have to play an aggressive game with the Hungarians at start, as they are sandwiched betwen powerful empires, with a lot more resources than them, and need to grow FAST
At start, having Javelinmen, Horse Archers and Cavalry is not a bad position to be in , especially when you start to pump out Spearmen quickly after.... Very mobile army at the start...
That's it for now, I think I will play tonight, and hopefully find out more things with this very interesting faction...
Pleasebe aware that if the Byzantines attack me, it's probably all over, as they are MUCH more powerful, at least in the EARLY period (which I am in right now) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
take care
