Do you take into account the host's choice of faction when you pick your own faction?

Feel free to explain, especially if you voted the last 8 options. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I am usually the host, and I take a reasonably strong army using some of the weaker christian factions (danes, polish) but sometimes I experiment with muslim armies.

If the host decides to vocalize and talk with the team about a reasonable plan involving specific factions, then yes, I might build an army based on the host's preferences. But if no attempt to disclose a plan is made by the host, I will not play 20 questions or "talk to the brick wall" to find out what the host is thinking.

I bring relatively similar armies when there are no orders on faction/army selection. I am currently building some "toolbox" armies out of muslim factions that contain a lot of variety and specialized units. I wouldnt really call them "power" armies.

I attempt to take the historic enemy of the faction the host has selected, but I also will take into account the map.

For Example if The host has selected a desert map, then I wouldnt take an army of 8 Byzant Kats, But I might select a muslim army or a army with light cav.

However, if it is a fairly basic map, then I would ignore the host's select and pick my fav factions...

IE on Early I always play as Byzantine as like the strat that I use.

Depends on my mood actually, but unless we are talking about a competive game I will usually bring a challenging army setup. Sad thing is most of the folks I usually play against know what they face if I pick the frogs or the turks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

So its always a fun army for me, win or loose I like to do it with a laugh

Depends on terrain, season, players, how many everything. And now with all the extra factions and units there is more to take into account. Like if the enemy takes Mongols laugh and go Swiss mwahahahahaaa

Well I usually host but i wait with the army selection and try to use a faction which makes the battle more balanced ...weaker faction against weaker enemies , stronger against stroneger ones ( very stron gwhen allied to Vandals deserting turcopoles http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

The negative side effect of this is that everyone ends up with a desert faction ( as you get almos as default so they think its desert) , the positive is that Im getting really good with almos as I forget to change faction with all the talking ) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Right now Im evaluating new factions armies so Im rotating the new factions/units and dont really care what everyone else picks....

i normally choose to pick a faction that will give me a good chance of winning but not an advantage ..

EDIT: for example Mo and I played some KFW guys in a 3v3 and we took normal armies from france and italy i beleive while all 3 KFW took either spain or byz .. after the game they started mocking us for being crap players so in a 2v2 rematch mo and i took spain and byz aswell .. nevertheless we won but, maybe it was just the system that won http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Gah

I pick interesting army that is 'win-able' if I can maintain good command and control during play. Don't care what others bring. In fact I dislike picking faction base on the opponents' choice. It delays the starting of game, esp if there are such players on both sides. It makes me weak if I can only beat a faction by matching it with another faction, but not by my c&c skill.

Currently playing egypt 90% of time.

Depends (still playing MTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif ).

If the host pick Spain, I pick Egypt, if the host picks Byz, I pick german/italian. If the host is a noob with either faction, I pick Russian...

If the host picks another faction, I generally pick Egypt, almohads,Polish or sometimes Turks/English.

However, I always let the host know if I switched faction...I hate it to see that my opponent has switched to Spain/Byz once I already picked my army... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif

I usually care more about the map / era / type of field / weather forecast than about the other guy pick... Another thing is number of players. And amount available.

So it has kind of many dimensions attached to it... And those who always see me with Turk set up, well it's because it's a 15k 3v3 / 4v4 high era non steppe game...

In 1v1, 15K, standart map I usually don't bring Turk... Italian in early, HRE in high / late. If winter or desert, any muslim. Mainly, because I s*** in 1v1 (well, in 1v1, I can't choose alies to do the job), and I don't want my fav Turk to suffer from the embarassment.
If less Fl (like 5K), I go back to Turk.

If team playing... Pretty often Turk http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif , or French... Or whatever (Russian?).

To make it short many other factors comes in play prior to the choice of my opposition.

To make it shorter... hum let's say I play Turk

i tend to pick an experimental army in all but the serious games...

I used to play muslims (yes that includes my to islam converted russians) most of the time... changed with underused catholic factions now and then (french and polish)....

Now... with VI, I am quite clueless http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif So no, i dont even bother what the host has for faction, I just pick almohads (untill i get used to VI)

I have 4 kinds of armies for each faction and then several actual setups within each army...

A competition army that I make in response to a tournament that I think will give me best chance to win.

WBA- the old 4x4x4x4 in order to practice against unblanaced setups

Fun army- not much explanation needed really

Serious army- like a competition but not usually so thought out, I use the strongest troops that the faction has in consideration with map, era and game mechanics

In 1v1 I'll take an equally strong faction usually, but sometimes a weaker one to test my skills.

If we ask the Mizus nicely they might make a mod that gives 2 extra units to anyone allied with Vandals turkos http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

It depends alot on actual player or players I'm against. I always try to pick a barely winable army to make the game fun. So if host is a strong player I will pick a stronger faction. What can barely win vs a weaker player wont win vs a stronger player. This gives me chance to test limits of certain units. Versus weaker players I give myself handicaps in degrees depending on there skill, faction map etc. I prefer close competitions so I wont pick an overpowering faction and army vs a weaker general or team. In MTW v1.1 this meant I took a good amount of light and medium cav along with a decent amount of cav range.

This way I maximize the fun (no fun in just completly steam rolling a guy). And I get to try different unit combos from different clans.

The exception to this would be if in 1v1 host choose byzantine. Then I would be forced to take a christian faction and take atleast 4hc.

Had a nice game earlier today, 1v1, enemy picked Byz, I took Spain, did thin-lines-Amp attack, game was over in 1 minute, like planned http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif.

ok,ok perhaps it was lame, but I'm getting sick&tired of facing Byz in 1v1's...sure was fun though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
