View Full Version : Viking Invasion SUCKS

OK, it is a good game... it has some nice additions...

but be warned:

1.) You can no longer view your saved replays of MTW v1.0/1.1

2.) Your Historical Campaign Progress is completely resetted. The Tutorial Lessons, too.

3.) Your Campaign Saves no longer work. One worked strangely, but the others showed a black screen and then MTW did not even crash, it was gone - and I was back on my windows desktop.

GNARF

Any hints how I can at least SAVE my precious Replays? There are some really cool battles I would really miss http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif(

Is there a way to convert them????

I meant the campaign games you saved before. I always kept the last save before victory of my campaigns - all useless now. Cannot load them correctly with Viking Invasion.

Ok so the game doesn't its just you didn't backup your saves and replays like it tells you to http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

The Saves still exist... you

ONLY

need to uninstall Viking Invasion and to completely reinstall Medieval.

Then you can load/watch them again...

Those extras of Viking Invasion come at a price

I would rather appreciate hints how to convert saves/replays than these futile tries to defend this flawless add-on...

Alright. You should have read the manual beforehand.
What you can do now is install MTW again in another folder, plus add the v1.1 patch and then copy your replays and save games over. Hope you have enough HD space.

its not flawless but just because some1 didnt read the massive warning it gives u when ur installing the bloody thing doesnt prove the games bad it proves quite another thing altogether.

SUCKS is a rather strong word for such a complaint. I'd hazzard to guess CA did not do this to tick us off but rather to improve these features in some way. If you really need those replays and saves, install a second MTW without VI if you have the hard drive space. If there is a conversion utility, I've not heard about it.

Damn

I read the warning, it pops up during install.

I simply cannot believe that I need to keep Backups of the 1.1 Patch and a second Directory for MTW just because Viking Invasion does not work with old replays and saves

No need for a Fanboy attitude

I am looking forward for the Viking Campaign.

Something I do not like is when fans only see the positive sides of a game or add-on. It is no heresy to tell people of flaws and weaknesses.

Let me ask those posters before: You did not mind that your old saves and replays no longer work? Really? That did not bother you?

I finished my last campaign yesterday, so I have not too much problems. But I cannot load my old saves and review my Byzanzine, Danish and whatever Campaigns.

I cannot even take a look at my greatest tactical victories, I had replays of really exciting battles.

I will probably like Vikin Invasion.
But I will not praise its glory without telling people of these letdowns. This was rather disappointing

Most expansion sets tend to have a change in saved game format and old ones tend nto to work with the new version.

Besides its easy enough to get new ones http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Listen, calm down.
I agree that compatibility is indeed important, but in some cases it's not possible when there are code changes. And no, I'm not sorry about losing the ability to watch old replays and some save games (a lot of them work, even the black screen ones, press Esc to get to main menu, and then click resume game and the black screen is replaced by the stratmap), because unlike you, I did read the manual, and I did think of what to do before installing the expansion.
And as stated before, you can have multiple installs of MTW on your system, and downloading the v1.1 patch again isn't too much to ask now, is it?

Longasc, careful with the fanboy comments. That will just get you labeled a gnit-picking whiner and then the flames will begin. And THAT won't happen, right everyone? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

We are all different. You are obviously very upset by this issue. The other posters are not. I guess we'll all just have to learn to live with each other on this big ol' happy planet of ours.

Knight, the comment was not directed at you, so relax. You fall under the category of gnit picking whiner. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

On the odd chance that something constructive might come out of this thread that hasn't already been said, I'll keep it open. However, if it gets out of hand, I'll close this topic.

I am sorry, I did not want to insult anyone here

Peace everyone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

I am still upset. And I got even more upset as I read RTFM... I read it, and I could not believe it.

Just imagine my face as I tried to load my old replays and hehe...

I am just trying to rename them to *.vrp... perhaps some will work. The old replay format is *.mrp.

I think it would not have been too troublesome for CA to include a converter or do something to avoid such annoying things.

Imagine someone who just reached the 3rd scenario of the French 100 years war, historical campaign.

He will have to start back in Crecy. Now THAT's annoying...

Brutal DLX

It's actually 40 minutes of playing time, at most. (If you use time acceleration in soem instances). And if you read the manual, went ahead with the install, then why are you complaining?
It's a different thing to open a thread and ask if there is some sort of converter as you don't want to have two installs of MTW on your HD.
Perhaps CA or one of the programmers will release one in the future...

Longasc

I just renamed all my replays with a tool

*.mrp to *.vrp

Tested around 20, all worked without problems.

Maybe that there are some issues, but it works.

@Brutal: No need to be so... protective.
I feel that these issues NEED to be discussed. And I think they give enough reasons to get angry about them.

Brutal DLX

Fair enough. And I felt I needed to be ...protective.

Should list the replay file extension renaming seperately, good job finding that out

Note: I split this post off into its own topic: Raiding & Rebels (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=6975). Please respond to it there.

Right then:

This is turning into a good :Lesson's Learned thread. Let's keep it that way. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat is always a good thing. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Good find on the file extension conversions, Longasc.

p.s. Too bad we can't rename the thread. Fellas: pick those titles carefully in future, please. We can't fix them later.

The original version of MTW ran using DirectX 8. VI was built around DX9. I suspect that there is a real possibility of file corruption when trying to convert saves and replays from one format to the other. They may work for now, but do not be surprised if something unexpectedly goes out of wack.

Someone recommended earlier that you make a second install for MTW and copy over your saves/replay folders. I know it eats up quite a bit of hard drive space, but this is probably the best compromise in the long run. I was also worried about losing some fairly spectacular battle replays so I made a second install for VI.

I'm certain your thread title and comments were made in the momentary haste of irritation. Don't sweat it.
