View Full Version : Creative Assembly VI woes
I am trying to reset VI's unit files to the same configuration I had in Medieval. However, I am having some problems. Some of the VI unit terms are different. I changed Varangian guard from Early High to all periods, yet am still not able to use them in custom battle. All of the other units that previously specified a country or civilization that could build them are now replaced with all factions. For example, Arab Infantry have all periods on them, even though they can only be played in the early/high. Some help in editing would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Lehesu http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I've been playing around with the units in VI as well. On a quick hunch I just checked my MTW folder and discovered what I believe is the key element. VIKINGS_UNIT_PROD appears to only provide the unit and stat info for the actual vikings campagin and for some reason apparently has to include the data for the other units as well. If you pop open CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD you will find the new units listed including the faction and era specific settings you are looking for. Don't quote me on this, but I think that the MTW and VI campaigns utilize the PROD files separately and perhaps the settings for non-vikings units are set to null in order to avoid loading issues in the VI campaign and vice versa. Hope that helps.

The startpos file specifies which unit and building production files to use for campaigns starting in that era. So the "vikings" production files are loaded and used if you start a campaign in the Viking era, whereas the original files are used for campaigns started in the other eras.

Why is the declare prod files heading available only in VIKINGS era startpos and not in the Early,High,Late files? Also it seems that all the era txt files are different in structure is there a reason for this? If I make changes to the unit prod file for a mod do I have to make the changes the same in both prod files for it to function properly, a few people are attempting mods with VI in the early, high, late eras and if they make any unit prod file changes it crashes during battles, it loads fine and plays fine until a battle occurs and then it crashes any ideas? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I expect the game uses the original files by default and this setting just overrides that.
Chances are some new things were added in the syntax for startpos files in Vikings and the original startpos files don't use them. I don't know.
We're thinking of putting together a brief modding guide; I'll remember these questions for it.
