hello all...
well, thanks to Gregoshi, i've been brought up to speed on the current state of the STW/WE/MI community, and have spent some time trying to get caught up... as i said in my first post, i realize that i'm really late getting in on the action, but i have really gotten into STW and have been having a great time learning the ins and outs...
Regarding the Downloads at the Org, i have installed several of the app's there ,and have had no problems... however, there are a few that i can't seem to get to work, and/or aren't sure what they're supposed to do... i'm looking for someone with the experience i lack to go over some of this stuff with me, and hopefully sort through what i really need and what i don't... so, if any of you folks would like to share your accumulated knowledge of the STW world, i would be most grateful...
BTW, barring some unforseeen event, i will be looking to battle tomorrow (sunday), so look for me in the foyer, probably in the late afternoon (EDT)...
ok, if you've gotten this far, thanks for reading... i hope to hear from some of you vets soon...
Take it easy,
Zennousha

Welcome to the community, you are never too late http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I think answers to your question will depend on what are you searching for. Do you want to mod the game? If so, to what extent... If explain this it will be easier to give an appropriate answer.
Generally speaking, people like tools like the gnome editor, wich lets you edit the stats of units and requirements for units.
Then there is the Bif Reader, wich modders use to edit flags and the looks of units in the game. There are other stuff of course, just feel free to ask http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

hello Portuguese Rebel, and thanks for the reply...
let's see, the best way to go about this is probably to first ask which of the Downloads are redundant, and also which are required for the others to work...
for example, i understand that the 1.02 patch is absolutely necessary, and have successfully installed it... i have d/l'ed 3 different logfile readers; i liked the widda interface, but it doesn't recognize WE/MI characters... the TW logfile reader works (usually), but doesn't seem to provide as much info... and the Magyar reader, which appears to be the best, won't work at all (gives an error and crashes when i try to open a logfile... It would seem that the widda reader was a waste of time, as i play WE/MI, but there was no way to know that 'til i actually installed it... which is one problem i have; i'm getting a little frustrated d/l'ing app's that don't work...
to answer your questions, yes, i'd like to work with stats, mods, bifs, scenarios, historical battles, and perhaps even a custom campaign, given i can learn these things... but again, sorting through all these d/l's and trying to determine what i need to do what i want to do is very tedious and kind of like shooting in the dark...
BTW, i'm not familiar with the gnome editor... is it on the Org Download page? if you get a sec, LMK....
some info that may be helpful: i'm running Win98se on an AMD box (1.0 T-Bird CPU, 512 DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce2 GTS)... to my knowledge all have the most recent updates and patches, so everything should be up to speed...
thank you very much for the reply, and please LMK if more info would be helpful... who knows, if i can get this stuff down, perhaps i can offer something back to the community... i've already designed a couple of maps, and would love to do some more historical battles; would love to do more...
Thanks again for the reply,
Zennousha

ok, major frustration has set in... most of the app's i'm d/l'ng are not working... error message after error message... i did read the section on Key Patches for STW, but frankly, beyond installing 1.02, i found the section to be of little help... I've spent too many hours d/l'ng through 3D for things that either don't work, or are way out-dated... please, if anyone can help me sort through this, i'd really love to have some more detailed help... otherwise, i'm throwin' in the towel, so to speak...
thanks in advance,
Z

Zennousha, are you downloading STW apps?
What exactly are you downloading and why? Keep in mind that many of these things were most likely developed in a Win98 and/or WinME environment so there may be some incompatibilities if you have WinXP. Most likely, no one has kept them current.
I think it depends what you want to do - play online, mod, make maps, etc. Then I'd talk to some one else who is doing those things and get the little tweaks and such you need to do that yourself.
As for logfile readers, Widda's was nice but he left the community before WE/MI came out and as such, it was never updated. Magyar's logfile reader was quite nice and as I recall, was working nice. I don't know how up-to-date the version we have is, but if you go here (http://www.wolves.tiscaliweb.nl/), you can get the latest and greatest via email. I recall there were several if's based upon your system when you installed it.
To summarize, talk to some of the vets first and get the word on which downloads you should get and advice on how to make them work.

hello Gregoshi, and thanks again for replying...
first off, the most recent was the Magyar logfile reader... it installed ok, and the app runs (ie- the interface appears on the screen and i can browse through the logfiles)... however, when i hit the button to open any of the logfiles, i get: Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument, and then it closes.... and this is with WE/MI v1.02 installed...
FWIW, my sys info is basically this:
O/S: Win98se (i know it's old, but it works)
CPU: AMD 1.0 T-Bird
RAM: 512 DDR
Vid: nVidia GeForce2 GTS
the Magyar interface seems to offer the most detailed info of the others (BTW, the TW final reader runs just fine, as does Widda's), so i'd love to get it running, but i can deal if it's just not to be...
one issue i could really use help with is not knowing which of these app's were made before WE/MI came out... i've noticed that so many refer to the demo map editor, which is of course standard issue with WE/MI... will some of these app's not work without the demo installed first? if not, do i even need them?.... ultimately, i'd like to know the in's and out's of all aspects available to me (stats, mods, etc., etc...)... i'd love to get familiar enough to create some new mods of my own that perhaps others would enjoy at some point.... of course, by then, i'll be even more of a dinosaur than i already am, but hey, it's fun, you know?
anyway, i appreciate your responses, and have, and will continue to follow up on your suggestions... thanks very much for the input,
Z
