why are we limited to a max 4v4 in multi?
i understand that certin minimum requirments for pc specs and or graphical limitations... but why isnt this a modable feature?
or is it?
how hard would it be to make say 8v8 games available as long as all players had the same mod?
has anyone ever tried this?
any response from the devs would be appericated http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif thanx
Im pretty sure it can be modded. But I dont understand why we cant have it bigger than 4v4. If people have the hardware and connections for it, it should be an option.
Already now some people dont play bigger than 2v2 because they have lag..that doesnt prevent others from playing 4v4..same could be said of 8v8.

It could be that the game engine has a maximum number of men on the field at once and if you go to 8v8 you could easily go over that limit. I remember something when the game first came out, one of the devs said that you could have a max of around 13000 men on the field but I could be mistaken.

i think the devs would be surprised at how many would be willing to use only 8 units each if they could play in a 8v8 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Im pretty sure that max is more like 25k. 16 200 man units for each player: 8 x 16 x 200 = 25600. Of course I havent tested that heh...yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think I can't wait.... 8 units, 4 units whatever...
If not modable, I want it for RTW.
A couple of questions;
How would you position units on the field (what would be the additional pos)?
Related questions; do we need additionnal color for that? How to play at more than 4v4 in vik era?

how about using the same setup positions... i think their hardcoded anyways :/ and letting 2 players, on the same team, each with 8 units a piece, deploy in the same start position.
colors could be shared as well... to reduce the amount of change necessary.. any 2 players who begin in the same start pos could share the same color too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Eight player limits are traditional for some reason in games... or rather, they're mandatory in all games which use DirectPlay since it has a limit of eight players, but we don't use that, and there's no player limit in GameSpy matchmaking, nor would there be any particular limit other than network bandwidth for the game.
I expect the main reason for the limit is that it was convenient (aka it just happened that way) at the time of Shogun. Everything else since then has been levered into that system, with varying degrees of pain, which is why (a) it doesn't do a lot of the things you want, and (b) it doesn't do a few of the things we want. By now the eight-player limit is way too deeply embedded - even if we tried it in some hacky way which didn't involve lots of painful UI changes, we'd see a horde of interesting new problems incarnate.
In short, nothing like this is feasible in Medieval, but I don't know how it's looking in Rome, so if you want >8 players in MP battles, focus your efforts thataway.

Thx for the info Gil.
How about a reminder for an MP campaign, as well, NC.

imho an online campaign that requires any mandatory battles is doomed to fail. + a game supported campaign would also require a full time moderator/game host of sorts, possibly its own server.
It is time to let go of an integreted system for now, when tw has 1000 players online then it would be feasable for the devs to consider this option.
what would be nice, and highly appericated, would be assistence in community produced campaigns such as the current one we are hosting.
for example, in order to resolve combat between armies we are now forced to use only whole units against one another, and when using the ai vs ai setting you must join the game as well.. of course you withdraw your forces but simple changing of the start pos of the armies is altering the balance a tad.
a simple program that is already written could be made avaialbe.. the sp campaign in the game calculates the battles instantly... how hard would it be to make that option in custom battles. so we could resolve battles after picking the units... without ever going to the battle screen.
or a program to use the logfiles... there has to be something they use to compile stats and so forth.. a log viewer of sorts.. this would be an essential debug tool they would have probably used in the making of the game. im going to be spending a lot of time manualy joining units using a calculator and pen and paper...
plz help out if you can... helping create a successful community based campaign would go a long way towards forfilling that age old promise of a mpc http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
