It ends when you're defeated, the year is 1453, or you conquered all of the map. You get an optional win when you hold two thirds of all provinces.

controll ALL the map? no rebel held provinces?

whats an optional win in 1453? is it worth as much points?

The game always ends in 1453 with the Fall of Constantinople (which marks the end of the Middle Ages).

You can get a victory at 60% of provinces held, and you can choose to end then or carry on to 100% total domination.

So there is a time limit to do all this in.

Yep. And there are no points given in a total domination game. If you accept the lesser victory, the ending screen will be slightly different. In full victory you'll get a narrator lauding about how grand the realm you rule is.

you asked me somewhere before what era and difficulty level i was playing..

i started in low tech on normal difficulty and im playing the french..

do you think i can still do all that raiding and pillaging on higher levels?

Well, you can pillage in any era, on any difficulty. Only that the starting castles are upgraded a lot more in later era, meaning you need either a bigger army to attack the province and hope for complete retreat of the enemy army, or you need to do a castle assault on the turn after invading. That is because in VI, most buildings in a province are protected by the castle, as long as it is still held by the enemy. So, you can't destroy any building and gain the money from doing so unless you captured the castle. You may pillage the farmlands, but that gets done automatically and doesn't give you that much money.

Oh, also the troops are of better quality in later eras, and the AI gets a combat bonus in battles, so it will be harder. Just try it and see whether you can cope.

Yep the AI gets its combat bonuses on expert difficulty.

The late periods can be fun to play if you want to jump right in and have the good units right away. (even if you may have less territory than If you did it yourself from the Early Period)

Is it called an optional win? I think they use another term that indicates that it is not a complete win. The complete win is to control all territory including all the islands.

When I received my complete win by conquering all the provinces, I don't remember getting any points. Also, if you can conquer everything after weathering the Mongol storm, then you win -- no matter what year it is.

basically if you accept the 60% your not as cool as the rest of us, and so you can't sit with us during lunch http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
