This is a quick comment, reposted from my reply to another thread:

Comment on trading & war:

The Italians who have only 4 provinces and rely on trading for income. For sustaining their 100 ship flotilla, suddenly declare war on the Byzatines who are their MAJOR trading partners.

Trading and wars should be tweaked. Why would any one go to war with a nation which supplies 90% of trade income ? that would make sense if the trading partner was invaded, but in most cases in MTW, the AI simply snipes some ships off the sea, quite foolishly destroying it's own economy.

This needs to be tweaked in RTW. You should be able to negociate some sense (e.g offering exclusive trade rights on certain goods e.g. spices) into the AI.

I don't think that RTW will focus that much on trade, except phoenicians, greeks and romans, no one really developed it ...

There was much interior trade (pax romana era and greek comercial relations are good examples), and I'd want to see that reflecting in RTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

In that case, a naval atack should be followed by an invasion. This is not what happens, the AI just picks of ONE ship, destroys it's own economy, AND just sits there.

I agree that the diplomatic processes of the AI need to be reworked.

However that may not be a problem for RTW. If it has more of a mission tree structure and utilizes CIV style negotiations RTW could be quite impressive.

I would be thrilled with Civ style diplomacy

From what I hear, CA should take some pointers from EU2 as well.

Eu2 had a complicated diplomacy screen fit for a complicated time(1418-1898),diplomacy in rome should be a bit simpler i think.

EU2 had the best diplomatic system I've seen in a game yet. I would love it if RTW took a page out of Europa Universalis' book. Granted, diplomacy should be a bit simpler though for RTW's time period. You wouldn't need Casus Belli for example to declare war.(Well you didn't really need it in EU2 either, you just became somewhat of a "rogue state" if you attacked other nations without some cause)

What i would like is a screen such as Civ3+Hearts of Iron. I want make territorial demands on somebody, go to war for it, and the end the war when im happy, and the AI knows it cant beat me. I hae going to war for one province and ending up being embroiled in a ige conflict that drains m resources, even thouh th AI has not won a battle against me since the start of the war.

I too think that EU2 is a good example for how should the dyplomacy work in RTW ... And maybe other features would help, like:

~ the posibility of paying another faction to go to war with one of your allies, so you keep your hands clean while somebody else does the dirty work http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
