Thx for the link. It looks great.

By the way this is already posted here in the RTW section of these boards, The Colosseum:

Gamespy Preview RTW (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=19;t=7073;)

Now that is an interesting picture

and what about the quote
Quote[/b] ]To that end, they're aiming for about 21 factions to appear in the game, representing the various cultures: Romans, Greeks, Barbarians, Egyptians, even revolting slaves such as those led by Spartacus. De Plater tells us that they've recorded over 400 voiceovers per culture

Er, note the 5 other elephants in the background on the right side bearing down on the poor Romans. Run away

Correction...6 elephants.

Gregoshi
05-20-2003, 13:22
There aren't 8 in the background on the right side. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif But I you're 8 count did open my eyes more. I didn't realize the the foreground elephant was actually 2 elephants.

Note to self: I can't count.

How will we counter such an awesome unit on the battlefield? I doubt your bog standard spearmen would go much good against that

(ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE OMG DROOL AAAAARGH)

May be the time to upgrade to a nuclair powered computer, are there any system requirements known? There is NO WAY any existing system will be able to handle this...

I think in the preview they mention something about igniting pitch-covered pigs and having them run in among the elephants.

Apparently the squeals and flames upset the elephants. I imagine it kind of ticked off the pigs to. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It was mentiont in the first preview about rome in the pcgamer Februarie.

What they should have is every Roman carry a skunk under his arm. Then he could raise the skunk's tail and squeeze. I'll bet that large nose couldn't handle it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Or they could have migra'ory swallows carrying flaming cocoanuts between them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

But seriously ...
This looks great I guess I got my wish.

but of course we all know elephants are nowhere near that huge - neither now or back then. that colossal size is a bit of an exaggeration....

the sys spec is about the same as for medieval, 1 GHz, 212 ram and a 64 bit gfx can probably handle it good enough.

Take a look at the Roman legionnaire that was launched by the elephant. Where is his left hand? It appears that flying death animation has been motion-captured without the shield. The shield, which seems to have pass-thru 3D qualities, is connected to the hand of the legionnaire, which is pointed at an awkward angle. That makes it so that the shield is passing through his wrist. Of course, an animation and shield like this is appropriate, given the fact that there are many different types of infantry that can be launched by the elephant, and not enough processing power to have animations that account for the shield's position as a solid object, when dealing with multiple shield shapes. That would require a ton of animations.

I also could be tricked by perspective. The left hand might be at an angle that is obscured by the wrist, and the shield might be flying off on its own. However, none of the other legionnaires have dropped their shields. I think that it would be much cooler looking to have elephant-launched shields fly off on their own as debris that would disappear when hitting the ground. It would add to the chaos effect in battle.

Their armor needs to be more used, rusty etc.
Those guys look like they just came out of the minting machine.

ChaosLord
05-21-2003, 00:03
I'd imagine Kongamato with going 3d as they are they're probably trying to keep everything basic not to strain things too much. Besides, whos gonna notice a shield clipping through a guys arm in the heat of battle.

Also I don't think armor should look too worn except on non-professional troops. Wern't alot of armies used for parade and intimidation? Wouldn't impress anyone with shoddy equipment.

Gregoshi

You read my mind Jacque. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Maybe CA should delay the release another few months to work that rust into the armour of all its units. And while they are at it, they can modify the tech tree to add the Armour Polisher's Guild which gives a +20% morale and loyalty boost when the units go on parade. CA can also add a buff parameter to the unit stat files which can control how spiffy the unit looks in combat. The modder will love it.

Um, sorry. I got carried away. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

re elephants: IIRC, on at least one occasion elephants were succesfully attacked with light spearman, who ran in and spiked 'em in the soft bits.

FIRST: WOW IT LOOKS GREAT

Second Thought: Thou shalt not praise the day before the evening

Anyone thought over how to control the action with these graphics?

In MTW, I rarely zoomed in, zooming out overhead gives better control and overview. The same will probably apply to ROME: Total War.

While MTW has some nice graphics, its strength is the GAME itself, not the Eye Candy.

I hope that there is somewhat more diversity like in Viking Invasion. Playing as the Mercians I have several dozen of Fyrdmen, a few Archers and half a dozen of Cavalry.

MTW had some more diversity in Units, and I hope the Roman World features not only variations of Spearman and Legions, but those auxiliary Riders and different types of fighting styles, like units suited to the Roman Acies Triplex or the Macedonian Phalanx.

I am looking forward to ROME, I hope my PC (2,8 Ghz P4) will run it smooth. I guess we will lose some Eye candy in real gameplay because of the facts mentioned above.

But all in all, MTW was better than Shogun in many ways, and I am sure ROME will not disappoint either. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Just do not over-enthusiastic. See what happend to MATRIX... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Ign.com preview:
While it was still early on, the team decided to give a glimpse of the new 3D strategic map rife with strategic possibilities. Instead of moving units from county to county this time, you'll actually move them around like you might move units in the Disciples or Heroes of Might & Magic.

What about some screenshots of the strategic map????

I am really impressed that CA is trying to include the older pc market with RTW.

I will probably have to upgrade some so I can have some of the eye candy. But it looks really impressive so far.

CA... I salute you.

While the eye candy is great

Historically elephants where not all that reliable in combat. They could inflict just as many friendly casulties as enemy. The chief uses for them where as baggage haulers and archer platforms. The romans used horns in a few battles to make elephants simply turn and run away ( unfortantley for carthage ) right through their own ranks. Also the upkeep was high. But I'm sure some of this will be taken care of with the stats.

If you don't look out with this big guys they'll turn on you.

They might be the RTW equivalent of the Thunderbombers or Napa Throwers: use at your own risk.
