Just wondering how much interest the games have created.

Myself I'm always on the lookout for history sites & have bought several books just because of discussions here and an older now defunct TW forum.

Books are very important... Yesterday I had delivered

The History of Mercia
Anglo Saxon History 400-1042
100 Years War - war by fire
Chronicles by Frobersat (or however you spell it)

Web sites are good and give a lot of info, but IMHO you cant beat a book, nothing comes close to the feel of using a book.

Not bought books - but definitely spent time surfing for/reading sites.

Out of general interest for Japan (which was again ignited by STW and this forum) I recently bought George Sansom's "History of Japan" (three volumes) and Kiyoshi Inoue's "Geschichte Japans" (this is the German translation).

The web is great if you want to quickly look up some information on a specific topic, but if you want to get some broader background books are the clear choice IMO

I buy books when something really gets my attention, my recent aditions have been,
The generalship of Alexander the Great
Napoleons greatest Battles
Battles in europe 1066-1413
AT all costs (great battles when massively outnumbered)

and i also search the net and print stuff out and such as all the info for the battles i created for mtw (i have a folder for each battle filled with maps , accounts etc) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I concur with Ser Clegane, the web is a good source where u
can find quick reference. But its the books that gives u all the much needed research and insight.

I had read all the 3 volumes of Romance of three kingdoms ( 120 chapters ) just becos I want to know each and every characters that the game depicted. A very nice novel though with a lot of poetry in it. Btw, the novel I read is in chinese... so i m not sure how it will sounds when these poetry is translated to other languages. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I think it's Froyssart, ShadesWolf ...

I read a lot, maybe because I enjoyed it from childhood and my parents tryed to develop this into passion for culture, which they managed pretty well ...

Well, the last books I delivered were:

"The hystory of the Ottoman Empire" by Halil Inalgick

"The Sicilian Vespres" by Steven Runciman

... and a small work of Benjamin Constant about liberalism.

Since I graduated university early this year, I'm starting to develop my own private collection.

With an Honours degree in history, I find it instinctive to always refer to primary texts, and reliable secondary material.

If I find a good online essay however, I will utilise it as well.

I know what you mean Swamp - although I started getting texts asa result of wargaming, then went to a part time degree as an adult (well 24....I'd done an apprenticeship by then) - NZ doesn't have a lot of military history courses, so I finagled 12 years part time doing subjects like early 20th century Europe, Comparative Colonial rebellions (Java 1830 & India 1857), comparative Asian Empires (Ming, Moghul & Tokugawa), WW1, Stage 1 Greek history (essentially the Persian & Peloponesian wars) and lots and lots of boring filler http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hakonarson, I don't think any university in Australia or New Zealand has courses focusing exclusively on military history.

In that regards I was lucky. At the University of Western Australia here in Perth, the history faculty allowed me to choose my own essay questions, meaning I was pretty much given free reign in selecting material to study for my assingments.

Ancient History on the other hand I found to be an extremely calcified academic entity. I failed ancient history not because I could not do the work (I found it fairly easy), but because it was SO boring and rigid
