First off, I want to profusely apologise for this post in advance. As a mod of a decent size other game boards, I know how frustrating it is for the regulars to have to answer every newb's inane basics questions - and for those reading this, I appreciate any help you could give me.

I got MTW a while back, tried to play it once, but it didn't grab me. I got busy at work, and completely forgot about it. A few days ago, I was cleaning up my room, and found it, threw it in, and have enjoyed it ever since. However, I can't find the manual for it anywhere, and some simple things are escaping me. I have been able to glean alot of answers to my questions through the other posts on the boards, but these answers evade me. If there is a place where the manual is posted online, point me in the right direction, and you can probably skip all my questions.

1) is there a way to see how you are doing compaired with the other computer factions? I saw a post which spoke about compaining GA points - how do I pull up this screen? (told you these were going to be dumb simple questions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif )

2) if you are playing a single player campaign, there are two choices - GA and take over the world (or something to that effect) - for the second one, do you have to take over the world to win, or a large part of it, or controll a certain percentage?

3) when units get low on people, do you just disband them? what is the point of keeping a unit of royal knights, if there is only 1 knight in it? If it is one of the kings units, it seems to regrow itself (of am I just completely wrong with that?)

4) why is it that sometimes when you go to hire mercanaries, there are a ton of units to pick from, yet most of the time none (even with the necessary buildings) - just luck of the draw/part of the game?

5) the only times I ever get marraige proposals is from tiny comp playerswho I am about to invade - is that par for the course?

6)is there a way to call off crusades?

7)bishop guys - what do they do?

I'm sure I have a bunch more stupid questions - but I appreciate the help that anyone can give me on any of the above.

welcome

there is a huge faq in the main lobby that you can read, but not post in, but yer not missing much without a manual.

there is an icon on the lower left of the screen, it's a chalice, it tells you your ga score

take over the world is just that. you'll get an option for a partial victory if you control 60% of the map though

you can disband, merge same type units, with a penalty to morale/valor or retrain them by throwing them in the training que, but only if the unit can be trained from scratch in a provence

mercs are luck of the draw ime

marriages are silly too ime, along with diplomacy

crusades cannot be called off.

bishops keep zeal up, convert non catholics and act as a spy in enemy provences. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

1) When in GA mode there is a gold cup beside the crown on the infotables ( above the building and unit que buttons)

2) You get a choice to claim victory when you have conquered 60% of the map.

3)The kings unit regrows over time. You can retrain a low unit by dragging into the production queue in a province where you can produce the unit in question.

4)If there is a market for them, you are at war with someone, they will appear, randomly. (but I am not sure about this)

5)They are probably afraid of you and are trying to buy time.

6)no. A crusade ends if the province is captured, by you or another catholic faction, if it has to few men, or if its home chapter house is destroyed.

7) raise the catholic population, reduces the effect of an inqusitor, and offers alliances.

1/ GA mode is really the only way to 'compare', to pull up that screen hit the icon to the right of the heir list (only available in GA mode)

2/ Second choice... partial win at 60% of the world.

3/ Retrain them or replenish them from another unit by merge with one or more units. Do this as the leftovers are often some of the veteran troops and are worth keeping, proper tending of vets will get you a base 3 valour unit in short order.

4/ Variety, also they can be far more advanced then the current lot you can build. Also if you have a lot of cash and need units quick. Note the choice of mercs is more dependent on units that have been disbanded then ones that can be built on the entire map... they are mercs so they are not dependent on your buildings.

5/ Marriage is a treaty. So it is used when they see a benefit... if I have princesses, I use them to bolster the loyalty of my non-related generals and provincial governors.

6/ Burn down the chapter house.

7/ Bolster your religion, so the percentages start to go up for catholics if there is a catholic bishop. Also they add a level of protection to your generals in the same province from inquistors... if your province has 45% zeal and your general has no faith (no crosses) then an inquistor would have a 45% chance of burning your general at the stake. Inquistors only effect catholic generals and not even rebel ones.

PS no stupid questions and welcome to the Org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

First off, Hi. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif (Eat that on a cracker, Greg)
Now the questions:

Quote[/b] ]1) is there a way to see how you are doing compaired with the other computer factions? I saw a post which spoke about compaining GA points - how do I pull up this screen? (told you these were going to be dumb simple questions )

5) the only times I ever get marraige proposals is from tiny comp playerswho I am about to invade - is that par for the course?

6)is there a way to call off crusades?

7)bishop guys - what do they do?

1)To access the GA screen, simply click the little button in the bottom left that looks like a holy grail.

2)When you play domination, after taking over 60% of provinces, you will have the option to take a 'minor victory' or try and capture all the provinces, for 'Total domination'

3) To retrain a unit, click on the army it's in, open the unit training panel in a province that can train them, and drag the unit in. They will be re-trained, along with any bonuses that province gives.

4)Mercenaries are luck, and units disbanded by other factions.

5)Yep, no-one good ever wants to marry you. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

6)Your own or someone elses? The answer to both is no.

Hope that helps http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Hey welcome to the org.

I can answer some only as I do not play sp myself.

1) You can look at your kings influence factor, if it is high you are probably doing allright. You also receive several notification on military power, wealth etc of the faction with the best of it. You access the GA simply by clicking the GA icon.

2) I am not sure, but I think that you have to either a) take all world or b) kill all other factions.

3) You can retrain the units after a battle this requires: a province with the buildings supporting the unit type you want to retrain. Example, you need a bowyer to retrain archers etc.
Yes, kings personal guard regrows itself.

4) Mercs. are available when you or the AI disbands some troops.

5) I have difficulties in this too, but hard work and low influence usually reach your goals. You can always marry them off to your princes though, but that gives you some severe disadvantages.

6) No

7) They are the same as priests, just more effective.

I tried to answer as good as I could with my limited knowledge about SP, read the most in the forums. Please correct if I am wrong.

Regards..

EDIT: a lot of simultanously posts, nice we are good a helping newcomers.

Wow thanks for all the replys guys http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I'm sure I'm going to have a few more questions as I play on, and I'll return the favor and pass on the knowledge to others when I can.

Thanks for all the help http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

tardo, I'm glad you discovered the joys of MTW the second time around. Thanks for joining this friendly and helpful band of blood-thirsty warriors here at the Org. Is five sets of answers enough? Or would you like more? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Well, Papewaio, and the rest seemed to pretty much cover your questions.

Just like to point you to the best manual ever created for MTW, that is the Table of Contents (thread) in the Main Hall representing the Sum Total Knowledge of the .org

If your inclined to actually read the manual, then spend time reading the TOC. More info than you'll EVER find in the manual.

Good http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Luck

at the risk of being repetitive.. ok here goes

1) is there a way to see how you are doing compaired with the other computer factions? I saw a post which spoke about compaining GA points - how do I pull up this screen? (told you these were going to be dumb simple questions )
My answer: If you are playing GA, yes. I dont play GA though so im not certain.

2) if you are playing a single player campaign, there are two choices - GA and take over the world (or something to that effect) - for the second one, do you have to take over the world to win, or a large part of it, or controll a certain percentage?
My answer:The take over the world is 100% domination by year 1453 (i think that's right). If you make only 60% or so, you still get browniee points. I think its called a Moderate Victory or something like that.

3) when units get low on people, do you just disband them? what is the point of keeping a unit of royal knights, if there is only 1 knight in it? If it is one of the kings units, it seems to regrow itself (of am I just completely wrong with that?)
My answer: Retrain those units up to maximum size by dropping them in the unit build queue in a province which has the facilities to build them. This is essential in the game because thos eunits collect experience and at harder levels int he game it is hard to win just with fresh units.

4) why is it that sometimes when you go to hire mercanaries, there are a ton of units to pick from, yet most of the time none (even with the necessary buildings) - just luck of the draw/part of the game?
My answer: Mercenaries depend on whether there's been a conflict nearby recently and if someone (incl yourself) had excess units and disbanded them. Other than that, its a small random chance.

5) the only times I ever get marraige proposals is from tiny comp playerswho I am about to invade - is that par for the course?
My answer: Diplomacy in the game is truly an art. The mor epowerful you are, the more jealous other great kings become and the less willing they will be to support you. The AI actively schemes to take down powerful players - not only you. To mollify your opponents, try dropping your high star emissaries on their princesses, effecivtely asking them to marry you. I'm such a warlord all the AI opponents hate me so my kings are very inbred (most have odd number of toes Vice)

6)is there a way to call off crusades?
My answer: You really think you could do so int he real world? Start it rolling and its a tsunami of its own force. If its an enemies, start one of your own. Crusades are meant to be like blind and wild magical fireballs flung at your enemy.

7)bishop guys - what do they do?
My answer: Use them to convert religions in provinces to your own. They are essential if you want peaceful Muslim provinces or else they'll keep erupting into rebellion. Bishops are also double value emissaires and can do alliances. If you get Cradinals, they convert at about 2x the rate of bishops.

so ... what other games do you play?
