Well... as far as I know during the Medieval era there wornt much tactic involved.

My last battle was very intresting. My ittis was lined up on a hill with alot of It. Inf. and arbalesters, and flanking cav.

The ai never attacked me, he moved to the left... i moved a it ot left, he moved the right, i moved a bit to the right... this kept on going untill i got so pissed of i Charge him and totaly crushed him... then i regroupt when hes reinforcment came running in... and the whole thing kept on going.

I was the one defending but he never attacked me... just moved around... very anyoing... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I do know what you mean with this. The AI essentially will never try to attack you head on it will almost always try to outflank you. This does result in some interesting moving up hill manouvres sometimes. I'm not sure how the AI varies its tactics from battle to battle or between the different difficulty levels but I guess until AI programming can improve you'll have to play online for that real experience of playing a truly intelligent opponant.

I'm not a great fan of upping the difficulty level too much because despite the improved AI it mainly seems to effect my troops morale http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif I'd love an option that just makes the AI use its best setting but gives me an equal footing.

I would try a multiplayergame, then you feel the real shame when you have failed and let down 1-2 allies of yours... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

We all have to start somewhere Longasc I wouldn't deny yourself the oppertunity just because you think you'll start off bad. Personally I've only played a couple of games online because I'm still stuck with a pretty rubbish modem and can't really spend a long time online before someone wants to use the phone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

MonkeyMan, I made the experience that in those 1-2 games where I saw a good chance for victory lag killed the whole game or people just dropped. :/

So I was left with the shame of having lost my battle in a 3vs3 engagement. Was too aggressive for a defender. Should have sticked to my other partners battle plan that was waiting in formation. But I must also say, if they had sent one or two cavalry units we could have routed and killed an enemy general, I was duelling with one and winning, but not with enemy troops falling in my back, my own troops were disorganized at that time, but the green bar was still in my favor. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Anyway, I really felt that I let down my allies and that they let me down a bit in my defeat. You learn a lot about tactics when you play against humans, they are no machines and do different mistakes and have more creative tactics of course.

as for AI and tactics hows this...

besiege within the castle the Ai decides to end it, he knocks down the walls and charges through the gates. well i charge him at the gate and after a bit im able to repell him.

NOW, heres where i screwed up. In my confidence i thought i had them on the run. so i charged out after them. as soon as i did this his calvary (which had been hidding close to the walls in a blind spot) charged me from the rear and completly destroyed my forces and killed my king.

hows that for tactics for ya?

bad luck or sheer luck, depending on the side, Monk. I would not say that the AI is capable of being so nasty, it just was clever enough to use the opportunity to its advantage.

perhaps it was luck, the only thing i know is i dont charge after the AI in sieges no more http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Last siege i was in the AI had unlimmited ammo (i didnt) so it just pummelled my men and took approximatley 10 minutes to try and march up through a gap.

(there was 7 full attacker armys)

(custom battle)

i still won. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The AI uses adequate tactics. It can be extremely frustrating sometimes though.

If it can't find an advantage to exploit it waltzes around and wastes a lot of time instead of withdrawing...dull. On defence, I have seen it run to each corner of the map before finally returning to where it started_setting up_getting crushed.

On the other hand I've seen it lay some pretty clever traps, and when it has the means, do some pretty effective flanking.

Hehehe I'm just glad its not too good. There are some awfully clever programmers out there, and I know of a few that could probably supply an AI that would kick my butt http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

the AI is indeed clever at times. in a bridge battle at Keiv (sp?) i found myself fending off the Mongol Hordes. it took every sigle unit just to hold them back. The Ai moved almost all it's units to the left bridge (where the fight was)the one thing i didnt notice was two units of MHC that went around to the right bridge. they crossed on the other side without resistance. then charged my men from the rear, needless to say none survived all 534 soldiers were killed.

On a higher difficulty setting, the AI is allowed to do more maneuvers, which can result in more interesting battles, but the fact that it gets combat boni as well might take out the fun for some peeps...

That seems unlikely... if you had Unlimited Ammo turned on, it affects all armies. The AI has the same ammo limit as you.

when it comes to the unlimited ammo thing... i want to know if this effects the AI... i was facing the English with longbows ones... he most have had unlimited ammo... my archers ran out fo ammo quick and so i got crushed cus hes arhcers kept on going...

anyoing... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif
