Hey nice work, always good to get new units.
As to youre problem gettin the black square in the battle screen, i was getting headaches for weeks while trying to figure out why i was gettin it then Lord Krazy showed me the light... you need to get a program called gfx, its old and shitty but it saves the lbm's in the right format for you to get the in battle icons showing, i will try to find my copy of it and send it to you, if not im sure you could find a copy of it on the net somewhere, its only a small file

Do you mean you get the black square in the battle screen or in the campmap screen. if youre copying the review_panel bif to the battle/uniticons folder, then that is youre problem, the battle/uniticons files should be in lbm format not bif.
You need to have 3 new icons files
a bif in campmap/info_pics/units
a bif in campmap/review_panel/units
and a lbm in battle/uniticons
does this help at all.
what i do is create the lbm in photoshop, it needs to have the same colour background as the existing MTW files in battle/uniticons. then open that file in gfx2, and then just save it over the top of the one you just created and it saves it in the right format. email me if you need any more info

i can send you an example of one i have done if you like?

The only thing that I did was copy and rename existing review_panel files to match the name of the new unit. Like when I greated the Welsh Longbows, I simply copied the Genoese Sailors review_panel file to a temp directory, renamed it to WelshLongbows.bif, and moved it back, and yet it still has a black square http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
What program are you using for edit the files?
kekvitirae, the mods you uploaded are posted. Both at 3D and the memberarea.

It sound very good, but may be I would wait until the final release? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
beside, I'm busy with my Danish Campaign now, it will take some time. Then, I will certainly try your very interesting mod.

Don't give up.
Modding is adding alot to the fun and replay value of MTW.
Besides it may be mid next year before I get to change files and repeatedly CTD RTW. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

LOL don't give up, you are only at the beginning. Just a friendly advice: Before you release a new version, playetest it for a turn or two. That should take care at least the "won't start" issue.
For further bugsquashing playtesters can help too. But first we have to make the damn thing to play http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I couldn't agree more. Just note in your readme what has been playtested. That way, people can choose to play an untested mod or not. Also, ask people in the readme to report bugs. Do these two things, and tell the complainers where they can lodge thier compliants.

Despite having experienced the "won't start" behaviour of your 1.7 (with the "fixes" too, it wouldn't start) I tried to install 1.8 (with the fix 1.8a).
Well... you got it: it doesn't start either. Now it doesn't pop up a message about some faction LINES, COLUMS (in 1.7 it was FN_SCOTS and FN_IRISH) but it just freezes at the startap, before even displaying the splash screen.
I've played almost every major mod out for MTW and yours was the first VI one... actually, was supposed to be.
