Ok guys, we know we all love land battles and the engine is great and with AI improvments could be near perfect. But is it just me or the naval battles got the shaft in the game. Wouldn't it be nice to raam your ships into the opponents side and sink it? To watch/command boarding manouvers? To even capture enemy ships, to set ablaze or top take back home. I've allways been a fan of naval warfare. For land i got STW and MTW. What about some ship action this time. As it is, you pretty much auto-calculate naval battles... Don't you hate auto? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
What do you guys think? Is it possible?
I was really looking foward to sink some triremes... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It would be good yes - also ground breaking - AFAIK there's no computer rules for pre-gunpowder warfare like the old Trireme board game.

It's be interesting to see whether they could get the rules right to allow for diekplus & periplus http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I remember first playing MTW and being absolutely awestruck by the level of tactical sophistication made available to players. And while I was anticipating something a wee bit more entertaining in the naval battles, I suppose that the incredible land warfare more than makes up for it. For those periods when the sea beckons and the salty mariner in me needs to respond, I pull out the Age of Sail games--they've done the trick for me. Still, it would be glorious to have a separate naval battle screen, as opposed to simply monitoring the map. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

naval battles, hummm, I think it would be hard to develop an AI to do it actually, since they rammed eachother, so it only comes down to manouver quick, which the AI sucks at.

I dont like it, rather auto.

Knight, with all due respect, where did you get that from??

The largest single loss of life in 1 day from the military took place in the 1st Punic war when a roman fleet was sunk by a storm - maybe 200,000 soldiers and sailors drowned - possibly as much as 15% of all the manpower in Italy at the time.

While all the flash battles may be on land, the naval history of Rome is long and complex. For example actions vs the Veneti during het conquest of Gaul, the Rhine and Danube flotilla's, Mark Anthony's reputaion was originally formed fighting pirates, the Greeks & Persians were of course deeply entwined by sea, while Carthage was also a naval power - how do you think roman armies got to Africa, or Carthaginian ones to Sicily or Spain if not by sea??

One of the defining moments in the 2nd Punic War was the defeat of the Carthaginian fleet at the Ebro in 217 - this gave Rome control of the Spanish coasts and islands, including the Baelerics and Ibiza, and allowed them to raid Africa as far as Carthage. Roman reinforcements to Sapin were usually sea-borne too.

Can't agree with you here knight... There where tremendous naval battles in the supposed RTW timeframe. I understand that implementing sea battles may be hard, but the reason not to do it must not came from historical emphasis, wich would surelly determine that RTW would have player controled sea battles.
