View Full Version : New Map of Britain with regular MTW factions?

Has anybody tried to create a new campaign that is using the map of Britain that comes with VI, but with 'modern' factions / units / buildings from the standard campaign?

The reasons why I ask:
I would like to see a Defender-of-The-Crown-like mod, I imagine that with all the new possibilities of VI this would definitely rock. I also think the smaller and more focused map would allow for gameplay that is much more like STW - which would be a great step forward if you ask me.

In case you wonder why I don't try it out myself, my appologies, I must wait for my copy, it's still somewhere in the U.K., I hope they will send it soon ...

Once I get my Osprey Man-At-Arms book on it, I'm going to be making a War of the Roses mod, or at least going to try to

Hey there, when you get around to it, let me know. I was doing War of the Roses before the patch came out but I moved on to other things before I could finish it. My harddrive crashed over the weekend but hopefully I still have the mod. Includes new names for ALL original MTW factions that are historical, faction specific, based on the lists of retainers and family members who somehow were 'attached' to certain factions. Includes the main players Stanley, Percy, Mowbray/Howard, Neville, etc. All new designations for pieces (emissaries become 'heralds', spies become 'seductresses' - hey think of Jane Shore or someone like that) and all new princess pictures taken from various sources (all gorgeous babes in 'tasteful' poses&#39http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif with a background of the heraldic arms or medieval scenes - these you gotta see to believe

Right now not really into it but I would appreciate it if someone with similar interest would take up the mod and when I find time again, and get my machine fixed, I'd like to get back to it. Just don't want to do it all myself.

I remeber Defender of the Crown on my old Atari ST 520 it was a very cool game (although proably crap by todays standards). I have thought about using the Vikinks UK map in the normal campaign for my next mod. I dont think that it would be too difficult all you would have to do is enter the following command from Vikings.txt:
SetMapTexturesSubdir:: "vikings"

And then all the declare land region, etc bits from Vikings startpos.txt file, but of course NOT the following:

Prodfiles:: UNITPROD "vikings_unit_prod.txt" BUILDINGPROD "vikings_build_prod.txt"

Then it would be a matter of assigning the correct land ids to the normal faction (e.g. FN_FRENCH), and units, etc. would take a while

Will try it soon.

Assigning the right land ids would certainly take awhile, since they are refered to by number, not name. This makes it a headache to search each land for the right id number

Hi Grell,
You mean if I change

UNITPROD "vikings_unit_prod.txt"
BUILDINGPROD "vikings_build_prod.txt"

to

UNITPROD "crusader_build_prod13.txt"
BUILDINGPROD "crusaders_unit_prod11.txt"

the game will use the original techtree and units, and I could start with assigning provinces in my new campaign file?? Please confirm.

Assigning the province owners is not such a problem IMO, I have done this in MTW several times, the only thing I learned the hard way was: Never place faction-specific units in a province and then assign it to the wrong faction.

If somebody will have a go at a Defender of the Crown mod please get into contact with me I have plans in this direction but am somewhat scared by the amount of work, the only mod if have done for MTW so far was the Teutonic Order Mod and, though it was fun in the beginning, at the end I had to force myself to finish it.

BTW, Defender of the Crown is now considered abandonware and can be downloaded at:

I have tried it and, yes, it sucks by todays standards. But it was a great game when I played it on the C64, which was around 1988. When I played Shogun for the first time, I was so elated, because it felt like playing "Defender of the Crown NT".

The basic idea behind the two games is the same.

In a sense, yes, with a few problems.

My suggestion is to copy and rename the crusader_build and unit files to something similar to:
UNITPROD "NewMod_build_prod13.txt"
BUILDINGPROD "NewMod_unit_prod11.txt"

Then edit the NewMod_unit_prod11.txt and the build_prod13.txt and erase any and all mention of the factions and provinces. Then just edit the file by adding in the Vikings factions and provinces to it.
If just a single mention of (for example) FN_FRENCH or ID_SCOTLAND slips by, you are going to have a startup error because the Vikings campmap\startpos file hasnt defined that faction or province, nor any other Crusaders factions or provinces.

I understand.

If it is that easy, I'm sure we will see War of The Roses and Defender of the Crown pretty soon

Wasnt the War of the Roses fought mostly on French mainland soil? (I should really check my history books before saying this - oh well)

Before I start on such a mod I want to get that coastal strip of France (Flanders?) working first, has anyone been able to do this for the Vikings map?

War of the Roses was the civil war between York and Lancaster, fought in Britain.

And Francland is not defined in the Vikings.txt startpos map, but that doesnt mean that someone cant edit the map file and add it

Someone please mod it I want to reinact the Norman Invasion (but have it end correctly this time...). Maybe add Franks and whoever else as well. Sorry my dark age history isn't up to much.
