I have a finished and tested version of my mod The First Crusade which contains 10 completely new playable major factions with Glory Goals enabled(without any old ones being over-written excpet Novgorod). New factions with correct histroical Kings names and graphics, historical blurb are:

Navarre
Bohemia
Flanders
Sweden
Genoa
Kingdom of Jerusalem
Scots (adapted from Vikings)
Welsh " "
Baltic Pagans " " (Uses Vikings Portraits) Have Druzhina as their leader unit.
Cuman Tribes (replaced Novg, Uses Vikings Portraits) Have Cuman Royal Cavalry as their leader unit
Danishmendid Turks Uses Turk Leaders

I have edited the Heroes.txt file so that Godfrey King of Jerusalem gets his brother Baldwin, and Roger I the Norman Sicilian King has his brother Robert, Bohemond and his nephew Tancred (these are missing and one goes to the Italian faction in the official campaign) other Crusader figure are added including Robert Duke of Normandy, Raymond of Toulouse, Count Robert of Flanders, and the two who returned in ignominy having failed to complete their Crusader vows, namely Stephen of Blois and Hugh de Vandemois.

I have also unlocked/added/created 3 new agent units, the Jewish Rabbi, the Catholic Zealot and the Chrisitan Heretic (the latter 2 having new campaign map graphics, etc).

The Viking Pagan shrines have been added for the Cumans and Baltic Pagans to use, I have also added the Christian Abbey, Chapel and Shrine and added Iron Mines, making the Metalsmith lvl1 and 2 available to all, with Metalsmith 3 and 4 requiring an Iron Mine, Iron and Salt can now also be traded as well as mined and I have added in Forest as a resource. From Vikings I have also added in Amber and Pewter.

Far too many changes have been made to the unitprod11.txt file to list fully, some of the main ones are: added Frankish Cavalry and Frankish 2H Swordsmen, Norman Knights, Medium and Light Cavalry, Feudal Spearmen, all of the footknights are trainable and so are the crusader units (e.g. Order Foot, Knights Templae, Hospitalier Foot, etc). "Fixed" what I saw as anomalies, i.e. you could have mounted crossbowmwn in early but not normal crossbowmen, Lithuanian Cav had ridiculously high training reqs, etc. I also changed rebellion levels (now much higher with better troops). Danes and Swedes can use the Viking units, but have some less units in the later Ages.

There are 2 versions of the dowload, the full ones in 9.8 Meg and is available at:
http://hstrial-tnorris.homestead.com/first_crusade.html

However bandwidth limits were reached on the first day of this mod being available. There is a smaller 1.7 Meg version which I have just uploaded to the .org, however it doesnt have the Pagan Portraits, or Jewish Rabbi Portraits, or new /GameEnd .bifs I created. The portraits can be manually copied over from Vikings (I explain how to do this in the readme).

While testing my mod for the first time ever I had a message saying that a King died without an heir and his lands reverted to the princesses husband. The King of Aragon died (of an illness rather than battle - not sure if this is a req) and as he had no heirs a message popped up informing me of this and that his old lands all reverted to the Norman Sicilians. I never once had this in MTW before the expansion back - has anyone else had this happen as well? I think that it needs a few reqs such as the princess must have married your current King (rather than a prince), etc as I havent seen this happen again.

PS I reccommend playing Kingdom of Jerusalem, Aragon, Navarre, Bohemia, Norman Sicilians, France, Danes or England in my mod. They usually provide a very good challenge. Also please note that (I am 99% sure) some units are hardcoded and the new factions will not have specific facshields (but Knights Templar, Teutones and Hospitaliar work fine). So stay away from the chivalric units if possible. I have had some epic games with huge battles as the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Very enjoyable.

Thanks Grell, could've done with some new shields. How are your battles working now? I think I'm still at the 'quarter load and CTD' stage. Have you found a way to get round this?

Grell
05-28-2003, 11:18
Well I have been playing the Kingdom of Jerusalem heaps and have yet to have a battle crash (after 100+ years). The Knighthood order shields work fine (as they are not faction specific). It seems to only be certain units that cause problems, (my light cavalry unit which is adapted from the hobilar seems to cause problems, so avoid them if possible). Any feedback on my mod would be welcome. Also please feel free to use any of the new units shields/flags, etc I am even happy to make some up on request.

OK I have had requests looking for my mod. I think a moderator manually uploads it to the downlaods section but it can also be found here:

Hi Grell

the screenshots on your weblink look great - one question where do i unzip all the files to? is there a specific folder within MTW or just the MTW program folder?

sorry, bit of a download baby

I have put the files in all of the appropriate folders already so unzip my download to your harddrive then just copy my "Medieval - Total War" Folder into your existing one, making sure to select overwrite the exisiting files. If you have added in other files or modded anything at all I recommend installing my mod to a "clean" install version of MTW and the expansion.

OK looking everything over I noticed that in the zip file I had one folder listed as InfoPics, rather than Info_Pics. If you want the correct info pics to come up for my new agent units the Jewish Rabbi, Catholic Zealot and Heretic please make this alteration (I will amend the .zip file). I dont knwow if anyone else noticed the graphics for these agents in the official game, I suppose it was for agents they intended to put in then changed their minds, I couldnt think of a use for the RobinHood agent (lowering income maybe but now way of implementing this). So I really cant accept full credit for these new agents as their graphics already came with the game (and also means it meshes in a lot better). Also there are a lot of buildings (such as Vinters Workshop Cloth Maker, etc) with graphics and descriptions, etc that we all have in our game files but for whatever reaso the game designers did not implement, I unlocked the Forest resource, and Forester workshop. Considered doing vinter as well but decided to leave it as a trade good.

Actually Dr. No are you using WinZip, rather than WinRAR? I had a look at my file using WinZip and it removes all of the folders? This is really crap, and I highly recommend you use WinRAR as it is just a matter of copying and pasting my main "Medieval - Total War" folder into your exisiting one, to copy over each file to its required folder would take forever, plus as some of MTW files have the same name but go in diferent folders, e.g. welsh_lge.bif has a different file but the same name in each of campmap\shields and campmap\shields\colours as these files have the same name Winzip just deletes them

OK updated my site and the download (removed the 9.8 meg bandwidth eater version, its pointless dowloading 8 meg of files which are already in your Vikings folder). Also added another screenshot showing Bohemia with the 3 new agents.

Grell, is this mod VI only? I just installed it and game won't start anymore.

No problem, though, I have many backups. Just maybe you should add a note on supported MTW version(s) to your readme ;-)

I also created a Outremer Mod, but from the size of your mod and number of features, I think your's will probably be better.

I have created Faction Shields for the Kingdom of Jerusalem, based on the historical 'Jerusalem Cross' (though they're in wrong colour because they had to match the faction I used, burgundy .. in fact the flag was a big yellow cross on white, with four smaller yellow crosses in the corners)
If you can use them as inspiration for for your mod, or use them in your mod, please email me at: mail@christian-wendt.org and I will gladly send them to you. I am also quite a buff concerning the Crusades, so I might check your mod for mistakes, but I assume I must get VI first.
I did also some research on Crusader Names from that era, and I have attached them, maybe they can find a way into your mod as well:

Great Mod Grell........

BUT....

...I have had a few problems.

As you said the units are bugged In battles, so before trying (I was playing Bohemia) I quicksaved like you suggested. Well predictably it crashed, so i loaded the quicksave and autoresolved. This Crashed to desktop and I can't continue my campaign in which I was having great fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Another bug I have noticed is with Jewish Rabbi. I have found that when you right click on the picture of a Jewish rabbi in the Production que or menu, the game will crash to desktop again.

Also don;t know if this is a bug but it is anoying anyway. A couple of factions (mainly the smaller ones) have to build up huge armies before they can invade another province becasue the loyalty of their home province is so poor. often this leaves you in the red on your finances. I found this with Genoa, Sweden and Bohemia.

I also found that for some reason I already had a tavern in Bohemia, but in the buildings menu, there was another Tavern available for me to build. I think this might have something to do with the mix of MTW and VI buildings.

Another (I Know I am rambling now) problem is the Jewish Rabbi. I have found i can never get the Jewish population above 5%. I know this is a bit of a small problem, but I jst fancied having a fully Jewish Nation for a bit of Novalty.

Other than that I LOVE this mod. If you can straighten out the problems, I will be using this from now on for my Sp games.

Well done

OK, i have a question...

I'm about to start as the Cumans - they look very fun.

But, what do the Jewish guys do? I noticed in a quick recon that i can't build border forts (for spying). Do these Jewish guys fill that role?

How do the pagans hold up in later years? I guess i'll find out, but i am curious. Do the christians crusade against them hard?

Some Answers:

Brother Derfel:
1. The battle crash for sertain units is very odd and I cannot work it out, feudal men at arms (I re-named them feudal swordsmen) require facshields, yet they seem to work fine for my mod (they are assigned dark grey default ones) while other uints cause problems, I have been chatting to CA progammers but they cant see what is wrong. It seems to be that certain Factions are not as stable as others. Kingdom of Jerusalem is very stable, Cumans are 100% (because they replaced FN_NOVGOROD), while Flanders and Genoa seem to be the most unreliable.

2. In an older version of my download I had a folder listed as campmap\InfoPIcs, rather than campmap\Info_Pics, this is where the info pics for the Jewish Rabbi, etc are stored, so if you use this older .zip version (I think I mentioned this in an earlier post above) just move these 3 files into the proper folder. Do this and they will work fine.

3. Some of the smaller nations will find themselves struggling (Sweden, Flanders Navarre, etc are alright because of huge trading revenues) Bohemia seems to be the most effected, but I have seen the AI kick arse and in the first 50 years take Bavaria, Austria, Franconia and Silesia). Historically these countries were not big expanders (in 1099 anyway) so I also deliberately put high rebellion levels to prevent early expansion.

4. I am pretty sure that the new tavernn is a feature of the X-pack which they added to the main campaigns (not just Vikings) and this is not my doing, i.e. taverns and brothels now come in 3 or 4 stages tav1, tav2, etc.

5. As an aside I had intended to have the Khazars as a major faction (Jewish reilg, Orth culture), they were a seperate nation who adopted Judaism, the X-pack even has Khazar Cavalry. But I thought Cumans can take their place.

Bohemond,

I played and loved your crusader mod (and Teutonic mod) these are what inspired me in the first place. Thanks for the name list, I had already added most of them (I replaced the Frisian Forenames in Eng\names.txt with the new Norman ones (but Kingdom of Jerusalem uses the same ones). I am also very interested in the crusades and had alot of fun making up some of the Heroes, I gave Stephen of Blois "Good Runner" for his timely abandoning of the crusade the day before Antioch fell http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif Raymond of Toulouse got "Bad Attacker" for his very unpopular insistence of continuing to seige (Tripoli?), although he was the richest and in line for first King of Jerusalem even his own men didnt want him elected. Godfrey was widely known to be very pious, Bohemond was an alround action hero adventurer swine, his nepwhew Tancred (not as capeable), Baldwin of Bolougne an excellent leader and warrior (could be harsh), etc.

I made up my own Kongdom of Jerusalem graphics, white background Yellow cross with the 4 smaller ones (actually I think I used your one for the base centre cross and re-colured it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

A_B I changed the build times of border tower/forts to 2/4, as I was getting bored of the old routine of building these two straight away, and thought that you should at least have higher than a main fort (castle3) before being able to build a border fort. Yeah go with the Cumans (you will have no crash problems with them). Pagans seem to be completely different each game, in my last game the 2 Pagans nitwits (Baltics and Cumans) fought each other And neither of them was at war with anyone else. Beat themselves up a bit so when the nearby Christians laid into them they were a nice soft target. Thats Pagans for you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

My own bandwidth for today might have been exceeded but you can still download it from the .org (I posted this above). just go to:

http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/

But please wait for vers2 (with the new Agent InfoPics in the correct folder). I am uploading it now.

PS Bohemond I notice that you have just put up your Outremer mod is this for the X-pack?

05-29-2003, 04:28
I've noticed that territories are much more likely to rebel now. I used to like this, but now i think that the AI can't handle it very well, whereas the Human player can - making the game easier. Anyone wish to comment on this? Perhaps a new thread...

Cumans are expanding nicely. One thing i like about this mod is that you need to attack your neighbors very quickly. No more piddling around building things - ATTACK

Grell
05-29-2003, 04:53
I increased the rebel values rather alot, your point is valid, but it also works the other way, i.e. if you conquer an AI province they will have a much higher chance of a loyal rebellion, this also prevents huge region migrations, such as the Spanish owning nothing in Spain but all of SW France, or the Danes losing Denmark to the Germans but owning Fresiland and Flanders (as I often saw happen in the standard campaign).

I have tried for 2 hours to upload my Final_Crusade_small_v2 file to the .org but it only gets to 50 or 80% then locks. I have tried two internet cafes with no luck (thinking it could have been a problem with my server). I know the .org uploads have a problem with .RAR only accepting .ZIP, but even a .ZIP version refused to upload. I have emailed Tosainu who will upload it to the .org from my own site (but the bandwidth for today has already been reached). If someone who downloaded the v2 file can have a try at uploading it to the .org I would be grateful.

I uploaded my mod because I found it had never made it's way to the org's download page, so this was my last chance to release it.

It is for 1.1e, and if your mod is as good as it seems, I will not work on it anymore, we're not in a competition here. I created the mod because I wanted to play as Outremer, but to be frank, the result was too far off what I hoped it would be. If MTW is supposed to become a good Crusader game someone should make a new map of the Middle East/Levante region, about as big as the Japan map of STW, and a lot of detail. Apart from the big factions like Kingdom of Jerusalem, Normans, Tripoli, Seldjuks, Fatimides, Byzantines, Baghdad there should be many smaller factions like Cyprus, Assassins, Armenians (Kilikia, Edessa), Damascus, Georgia, Aleppo, Baghdad, and so on.

The way I created it, it turned into the tedium of fighting the Egyptians every two or three turns very quickly. Maybe some people like this but I don't.

EDIT: Jerusalem Cross: Yes, 5 yellow crosses on white ground, one big one in the middle and four smaller ones in the corners, that's the way it should be, similar to the Hochmeister-Flag of the Teutonic Order.

Bohemond
05-29-2003, 10:16
Some interesting vices for the historical figures you created. Stephen de Blois was maybe not a coward per se, but he was forced by his wife to participate in the Crusade. You should not, however, think too low of the role Raymond de Toulouse played, in my opinion he was the only sincere Crusader of the frist Crusade, maybe turned down the Crown because he was to modest.

It would be great if figures from the later stages of the Crusades would find their way into the campaign, like Gerard de Ridford and Raynald de Chatillon, who fooled the Crusaders into the Desaster at Hattin.

Grell
05-29-2003, 14:46
Yes Stephen was actually a good warrior and well liked, but returning to France without having fulfilled his Crusader vows was a stigma he had to live with and this VV seemed the most appropriate, he did return to Outremer but died (at Tripoli?) waiting for a boat to take him back home again. Its funny reading some of the letters he wrote back to his wife, from memory one written at Constatinople said that they would be in Jerusalem within a few weeks provided Antioch fell easily (which it didnt) and they arrived in Jerusalem 2 years later (from memory) what stuff have you read on the subject that you recommend?

In my opinion - increasing the rebellion factor increases the difficulty for the human player. Anyone who has played the Spanish knows how damn difficult it is to subdue Portugal. I've taken it and garrisoned it with 500-700 men only to see the damn thing rebel anyway. A special event (drought) hits and even 1000 men garrison won't deter a rebellion.

Definately the home 'capital' territory for all factions should be increased. This region is generally build up, the owning AI produces units there so it is well garrisoned, and taking the region causes you to add large garrisons which eat through your income. Setting these territories to '3' or '4' and all the others to '1' definately makes the game more difficult as the threat of rebellion is everpresent.

Sir Robin
05-29-2003, 17:30
The main problem of course is finding a balance between making things tough for the human player and tough for the AI.

Playing 1.1 and 2.0 I have noticed the AI is usually not good at suppressing rebellions. If the core provinces rebellion factor is to high the AI factions might collapse.

The book I enjoyed most is Robert Payne's "The Crusades", I think I read it three times.
If you are a bit crazy you could also try Steven Runcimans "History of the Crusades", but a word of warning - it is not an easy read, 1200+ pages filled with ever changing names, facts, in the end I was at a loss what was going on, or which Balduin or Tancred the 5th/6th he was talking about.
There are many good novels as well, "The Talisman" by Sir Walter Scott was a very good read, you will probably know it. I also read Stephen Rivelles "The Crusader" but found it to shallow.
Which books would you suggest?

Grell
05-30-2003, 02:31
I had a brilliant book I think it was called "The Book of Days", it is a diary (supposedly) written by an eye witness minor Lord in the service fo Raymond of Toulouse, an anscesstor discovered it 10 years ago and translated it into English and a moders vernacular. I read it a couple of years ago (before MTW) and my ex took it when we broke up (I think more out of vindictiveness that any desire on her part to read it) I have seen it in bookshops since though (might buy another copy). I just read Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, love the depiction of the Tempalars especially Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert and sir Regianld Front-de-Boeuf. BEfore that read "Falls the Shadow" by Sharon Pelman, its about Simon De Montfort (the younger) and Llewelyn Prince of Wales (to to keen on her writing style). Oddly enough the fiction I hav emost enyoyed on the Crusades is a "Pulp"ish sort of of 500 pager by Robert Shea (who wrtoe Shike, it is in the RObert van Lusterbader vein but about the Cathars King Louis IX and the 4th crusade.

Added 2 new buildings to my mod:

The Muster Field (+3 morale, need a Castle4), and
Barracks (+1 Discipline - same as a Military Academy)

These replaced the extra Tavern and Brothel buildings which became defunct with the X-Packs new upgradable ones.

"The Book of Days", that's the one I read too, by Stephen Rivelle, I only didn't know the correct English title. I read it to the end, but found it is only a reiteration of facts that can be found in other books. Also, didn't you realize that is 100% fiction? I ask because you seem to have fallen for the misleading information in the foreword. This is my biggest complaint about this book, most people never realize that they are deceived by purpose, because it is never mentioned that all is thought out. But believe me, it is fiction.

Sorry for what your Ex did. But that what women are like - they always want to destroy what we like most. If I was you I would take it back from her ;-)

painted shields are for sissies anyway. Lets mod the units so every unit has a wood or hide covered shield.

Grell
06-01-2003, 05:05
Were you in the High Age for the Kingdom of Jerusalem when it crashed, I have yet to have a crash playing them and I have had some huge battles fighting Egypt and the Danishmendids (another new faction) with no probs, even the Knights Hosp and Templar showed up fine with their proper shields. I am really at a loss as to why it crashes sometimes (I have an army consisting of 1 peasant unit crash) while huge battles (involving units which need facshields but are assigned default grey/brown shields) work fine. Hopefully Giljaysmith (a CA progammer) is running these new factions through an official debug (de-bugger:) to work out what the problem is.

I agree with A_B, a battle with Aragon and Spain is like the clash between two circus tropues, bright pink, yellow, orange and red everywhere. If all factions could just use the default wood/metal ones it would look better and might solve the battle crash problem.

Have you considered that the problem might be that all the shield images aren't there in the battle/ folder? I dont know if that would throw off anything, some other folders were missing as well. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Like I said, I am just a programmer, I dont know. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif I am just a beginner in modding.

I meant the FLAGS were not all there, not the shields, sorry. Some of the FLAG images are missing...

I know this is a silly shot in the dark, but have you tried removing one of the factions?

Just curious if that might be causing an overun.

When it CTDs is it before or after the pre-battle screen?

Do you mind if I try adding one faction at a time?

I really like the mod and would love to find a way around the crash.

Of course anyone please feel free to use any of the stuff in my mod. I dont get precious about things like that, anything that adds to this great game I am all for. I have stopped working on it for now (until this battle crash problem is resolved). I am now working on a mod set in 1266 with Burgundy, Swiss, HRE, Sicilians, Itlay and Novgorod completeley re-done to Teutonic Knights, Hapsburgs, Bavaria, Bohemia, Angevin Sicilians and Lithuanians. I have been very thorough with complete sets of new FacShields for each faction and even the Glory Goal shield crest for each one. Golden Horde is now a playable major faction and it even has historically correct Golry Goal Homelands (about 8 of them including Khazar, Wallachia, etc). As these factions are not using completely new slots (but replacing exicting ones there are no battle crashes http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Golden HOrde absolutely romps. Historically the HRE was in a lot of trouble with decades of the Interegnum (no Emperor) so unless Bohemia, Bavaria and the Hapsburgs sort out a clear leader (as Rudolf of Hapsburg did) the Golden Horde might conquer most of Europe Although the Horde has its own dynastic trouble with the death of each Khan. As the Teutonic knights are using the old GHRE FN#7 posi when the Grandamster of the Order dies (without heirs) the strongest general becomes the new Grandmaster, very sweet. about 80% finished but I want to test it an dmake sure it is 100% before releasing it. Also if Giljaysmith can work out the crash I will be able to add in some more factions. Anyone want to test it as is?

Sure, vnjn@cox.net.

How do you guys get time for all this.

Added KofJ and no problems so far. Still need to finish copy/paste for that faction. Kinda silly how all my KofJ generals have russian-sounding names. Oops... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You must have the best, or worst, wives in the world to give you the time to do all this.

Send it to me, please.

Thanks

EDIT: Don't send the needs-to-be-tested 1266 mod, mind you. I'd appreciate if you send me the .EXE of your ten-new-factions mod. Thanks again

No one is sure exactly what is causing the CTD error.

Grell has sent files to Gil at CA who will look them over.

When Gil has a chance, hopefully this week, he will try to figure out what is causing the error.

The CTD has basicly stopped me from continuing on my own mod out of frustration, and certainly hope it can be fixed. Your mod looks pretty sweet so far

I doubt that it can ever be resolved as the code which assigns facshields is hardcoded and even though new factions can be decalred in the campmap/startpos files the game doesnt seem to recognise any new facshield files.

However I have finished another Mod which replaces exisitng factions with completely new ones (with recognisable new facshields) thus avoiding the battle crash problem, but alas still restricted to 20 factions. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

What if the factions above the original twenty don't use fac shields? Use those for pagan factions. Would that work or not?

I am not 100% sure - I hope so, but there could be problems if you bribed a unit requiring facshields, and I have experienced crashes with new factions in a battle consisiting only of peasants (who dont use facshields) so facshields (or rather lack of) might be only part of the problem.

Just wondering if you could go into Crusader unit Prod file and make all units with facshields unbuildable(I believe theirs 8-9).I've played your mod quite abit the last week or so, and haven't had any problems w/ CTD.Thank you for a great mod, this should have been the game CA made,it adds so much to the original. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks for your comments, shame that this CTD problem has not been resolved. I have gone 100+ years with heaps of battles as Navarre and KofJ with no CTD, yet as Genoa and Flanders I got a CTD in the first battle

It also seems once you get one as a Faction, you keep getting them - no idea why this is http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I get Screen Freezes in the Campaign Map. All of a sudden the game freezes and the music starts looping. It used to happen to me if I didn't save every 5 turns or so but on your mod it happens about 60 seconds into the first turn, when I played Sicilians and French. I have tried to start the campaign again but it consistantly freezes. I haven't had that problem at all with the Cumans and Danes. (Those are the four factions I've tried out so far).

Ihaven't had CTDs while loading battles for any faction (although I was never able to do battle as Sicilian or French)

Still it is a great mod Can't wait for the kinks to be ironed out.

PS, might I suggest name changing the "French" to the "Franks" (Frankish, Kingdom of the Franks, etc.) Also aren't the people of Navarre called the Pamplonians?

Much Kudos for the great work man.

I have noticed that I cannot do a sea invasion of Naples either. I will check again tonight, but I had no "At-War" enemies during all my attempts and had it surround on all three sides by ships.

I have found that once I receive a CTD, my Quicksave game becomes corrupted with all "personal" battle attemps.

Try this for the CTD. Periodically save your game to something other than the Quicksave.

Close all running applications. Go into your OS temporary directory. For Windows 95/98/ME, the default is C:\windows\temp. Clear out this directory. MTW leaves a ~ef?????.tmp file in there. Make sure this file is removed.

In Windows NT, the default directory is c:\temp. In Windows XP, the default directory location can be found in Start > Settings > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System > Advanced Tab > Environment Tab).
The Variables should be Temp and tmp and will default to your Profile\User directory settings. Copy down the path and clear the appropriate files there.

You can change the Value to C:\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp or anything else you see fit if you want an easier folder to find.

After clearing out this folder of any ~e .tmp files, if you now continue to crash to desktop, you will probably need to delete your Quicksave game or use the auto-calc resolution.

Okay, I started playing again last night after a long layoff and found that this solution doesn't work. Oh well.
