View Full Version : I think castles were made for standard unit size.

I always play on HUGE setting as I like the larger battles. However, I have never liked the fact that castles cannot hold very many men, and when your men do fit in a castle, they only last one, maybe two years.
Then it hit me, if I was playing on the puny standard size, I could fit all kinds of units in a castle and last 5+ years http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
So, I wish that the game would compensate for the larger units sizes by upping the castle limits etc... Is this a possibility in VI?
It is the same problem as with the prize for large units: I do not think that it is really a viable choice to play with the HUGE setting, because of the facts you mentioned and some others.
Well, you could always mod the castle capacity. And no, VI makes no changes to this.

But isn't it more fun to play with thousands of units instead of hundreds? Don't most wars get fought with thousands of troops anyway?
More death, more fighting, maneuvering troops is more critical with more men.
I would have thought it should be more viable with bigger units. Ah well; what do I know. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
I prefer the game with big units. Admittedly the smaller units are proportionately more manouverable, but I think an 80-strong heavy cav charge is glorious.
As for castles, yeah there are definite limits on the huge unit size, but with extensions you can get 600 men in. Secondly, it seesm that the duration a garrison can last is proportional to the castles capacity; it seems roughly that a castle with space for 400, with 200 inside, can last 2 years. In fact castles can be succesfully defended with quite small numbers, or at least made extremely costly to take.

Yes, I attacked a castle with about 900 men while the Germans had about 400 troops. I thought this woulda been an easy victory with my 3 groups of knights, highland clansmen, feudal sargeants, and swordsmen against his mere militia sargeants.
But since I was without any seige, I barely took the castle with maybe 40 troops left of my army.
