Is the distance of the enemy fixed or can it be altered in custom battles (or any battles for that matter)? It would be nice to have more time, sometimes, to set up elaborate movements.

Thanks.

Beirut:

At the start of battles the armies 'spawn' (come into being) with deploymeny areas (usually circles or portions of circles).

On defense in custom battles, or in multiplayer, you can set up your men prior to the battle (on offense in custom you can use the standard formations also). If you wish more time set your men up toward the rear of your deployment area.

Thanks.

Seems I'm not that bright. I just figured out that you can position your men while the screen is frozen prior to battle. (Just like you said.)

Makes a world of difference What a great game though. I would have paid the price of admission just for the custom battle designer. (Which is all I use anyway.) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Anyway, by default, the armies are deployed in spitting distance.

You could also use the pause button. When paused you can Click and drag to form units. They will head to their spots when you unpause obviously http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

That is useful at the beginning of a battle where you do not get the chance to deploy correctly (such as the Hisorical campaign battles), but I tend not to use it... Simply because I don't want to have a break in the action, and part of the fun is keeping track of everything that is going on and reacting accordingly

Pause button is good to settle your army at times, as in before attacking your enemy when you're in their shooting range, it spares you lots of men. But one thing you cant beat is that you gotta foget about pausing if you wanna play multiplayer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

I use the pause button before every battle but so far I've only played SP. Are there no pauses in MP?

I don't use pause unless I'm going for cookies or beer. Or the Chivalric Throne. But I'm having a great time placing units pre-battle, kind of like mission building in IL2-Sturmovik. Easy to spend ten minutes or more placing everyone exactly where you want them.

I've set up circular formations with pikemen all around, archers in the middle and a single cannon (or two http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif ) just to go after the enemy king. Assasination 101 as it were. Anyway, gives the enemy forces a tough nut to crack even with hardcore troops.

What a riot this game is. My free time ain't so free no more.

hehhe, damn right that is http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif and no, jadast, no pauses in mp, logically, imagine all the other players waiting for you and then someone else pauses the game and then someone else and on and on. Plus it forces you to plan your attack carefully since yyou wont have any chances to reconsider it by pausing. Ah, multiplayer is bloody http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Im very upset coz the players flew to the vi server though, but still it is their right http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Welcome to the Org and Entrance Hall Balamir.

In addition to suffering morale and seeing double, the general will wonder why he loses battles when he has a 2-1 advantage in men.
