I was wondering if it was possible to create 'invisible' fighting units, like having a raiding cavalry unit of about 30-60 men with the capability to remain unseen by the 'enemy' like spies or assassins? For instance a unit of border reivers or thugs to prey on your enemy covertly. Something like that?

Yep. The Hashishin, Sherwood Foresters, Spies, and Assassins are all invisible. Open up Gnome editor and look on column 44 of the unit file. Most of the units are NO, meaning they are like normal units, visible on the strategy map. Setting it to YES will give them not only invisibility, but also the ability to hide in the open on the battlefield

Well, battlefield ninja units in Shogun showed up on the strategic map, but were invisible on the battlefield. Is that possible in MTW (I didn't know that column 44 made units stealthy on the battle map).

This would be great for the LOTR mod: The rangers of Illithien and the elven archers should fall into this category. You don't see any elves when you invade Lorien or Mirkwood, but they see you and start sniping at you (just like the Battlefield Ninja in Shogun).
