I had like 9,000 guys in Totomi. Unfortunately Totomi had neither a castle nor a port and I owned none of the neighboring provinces. So there was no escape.

Well, Lord Hojo stormed Totomi with like 4,000 (much better troops, incidentally).

When I click on "Automatically Resolve the Defence," it says DEFEAT and that I lost around 3,000 guys.

My problem is that when I return to the strategy view, where are my other 6,000 guys, the ones who WEREN'T killed in the battle?

1. They didn't hole up in any castle, there being no castle.

2. They weren't teleported somewhere else on the map, there being no port.

3. They did not retreat to a neighboring friendly province, there being none.

So they're gone! What's up?!? Are they relaxing in "Region Zero," or did they all jump into the sea like the rodents of Hamelin?

"Hey, Idiot!" you say. Why don't you COMMAND THE DEFENCE PERSONALLY? Love to, but for some reason every time I fight one of those really huge battles, my game invariably crashes to desktop about 80% of the way through the battle. I think it might have something to do with the Battle Log becoming too big. I don't know. So I am forced to have every really BIG battle fought by the computer.

Advice for either problem would be appreciated.

Apart from that, there's not much you can do, except trying to avoid having your men stuck with no route to a friendly province. You shouldn't leave large armies in outlying provinces.

The explanation of what happened is this: your men either committed suicide or turned Ronin after having no means of escape. It is unavoidable I'm afraid.

I sometimes crash with really big battles.
What you have to do,is make sure the battle doesn't drag out for too long.
So go right for em,and chase them off the map,as quickly as you can.

hey if you can't retreat you lose everybody. best to defend personally, that's why it's strength is on RTS instead of Turn Based campaigning.

"Hey, Idiot!" if you think that the Battle Log is becoming too big... why don't you turn it OFF (in the options) and see what happens... heheheheheeeeee

Upon scrutinizing the phenomenon, I think this was an idiotic thing to have posted. It says right there when you’re given the choice to proceed or retreat from a battle, “if the enemy action causes there to be no friendly province to go to, the army will be lost." Which explains things very clearly.

Guess I’ve just been too focused on the numbers they give you to worry about reading any fine print.

Thanks Death Wart and JayDee Daidoji, you both inadvertently solved my tech problem. I was having choppyness and eventual crashes whenever I would have a battle, no matter the size. I turned the battle log off and problem solved!
